45 yards with a recurve come on man dont lie.

We had a fella in NJ kill one at 52 yards with his recurve this year. Mind you it wasn't a good shot by any means, but he did recover the deer.

Gary Landry is from my parts. I've met his wife who is very nice. I know a few people that are closer to Gary and they tell me he is one of the best hunters they know.

i was bowhunting when hugh cox got the very nice buck in haydenville south of logan...20 points...1964...i remember it well...and know xactly where he got it...yes there was more deer back then ...than some realize...but nothing compared to today...i used to think there wasnt any either when i first started hunting...soon i found i had no trouble finding deer...there was a lot of big bucks back then...this picture of hugh cox is what a bowhunter should look like...wish i could post the pic...:mischeif:

hugh cox with his 1964 deer kilt in haydenville near nelsonville...20 pt. b$c...i love his back quiver...i remember well when he got this deer...1st time he hunted the place i believe...he walked out...found a deer xing on a creek at the mouth of the hocking river...i dont believe 33 was here yet but could be wrong...he built a ground stand there and hunkered in for the eve. hunt...a groundhog came by and busted him...worrying him...the deer came by just before dark...he shot it and the deer ran off to xpire in tall weeds...i believe when he found it he bent over to look at it almost running the broadhead into his eye...
i thought the other pic was interesting...thats how deer were often transported on the roof of a car back then...or the hood of a car...interesting the amount of vw beetles were in this book with deer strapped to them...they were very popular back then...this is a very good book...vintage photos from the boone an crockett club...its called a whitetail retrospective...really neat...
as for the longer shots...this was common back then...i missed a few shots from the ground at 50+ yards(just barely)...my regular practice distance was no less than 30 yds...in 1964 30 yds. was considered a close shot according to the xperts...to me this is what a bowhunter should look like...

Some one said that in the 50's and 60's that if you saw a deer it would be like seeing a black bear today in the state?

not true...even in the 50's deer were much more than the black bear pop. of today but still there wasnt a lot of deer by todays standards......and in the early 60's...the population of deer was growing by leaps and bounds...i seen deer almost everytime i went out...sometimes several deer...and somewhere around 1967 i believe i seen 28 deer standing in the powerline clearing...one of the powerlines in one of our areas today...i believe that still stands by far as the most deer i have seen all in the same place and at the same time...most of the deer were bucks...several were very nice including one that was 14 point...i had several encounters with the 14 point as did deadhead,my brother and my cousin...my brother and cousin actually got shots at it...both missing it...back then we still hunted and stalked 99% of the time...every now and then we slipped the bow over our shoulder and clumb a tree...then stood on a limb...:D

Thanks for sharing coonie. So really by 1960 the deer herd was abundant. Thanks for the history lesson. This might sound dumb, but have you noticed any difference in the species of the deer say from 68 to present. I also heard that a lot of our deer were tranplanted here from Wisconsin. I just wondered if this was true?

First deer I killed with a bow was 60yds and the bow was a Herters Sambar.

I think the year was 1972.

Back in those days we practiced regularly out to 80yds.:shhh:

deer were transplanted...thanks to market hunting in the 1800s the herds were almost totally wiped out...transplanting and hunting regulations and smart biologists...saved the white tail......some market hunters killed over a thousand deer and sold hides and meat...but i believe todays deer are the same type from the 60's...also there is sitka deer popping up in se ohio...prolly from game farms...they are smaller than whitetails...

First archery season in Ohio saw a harvest of around 63 some deer - this is the golden age of deer hunting in Ohio now - enjoy it while it lasts :mischeif:

that pic came out very distorted ...the rack sides(beams ) are perectly equal...i took the pic of the pic at an angle that caused the distortion...yes ohio was almost at zero in the early 1900s...but in the 6o's things were on the mend...the herd grew by leaps and bounds each year...it was very noticable in the increases each year...ohio just didnt start producing monster deer just recently...its been going on for many years...:D

my longest shot made and with a kill was 83 steps ( yards) i was using a bear kodiac and 22 19 with bear razerheads , full length arrows for the weight . he didnt run 50 yards , and dies in a full run .so now go ahead and laugh , but you need to understand i was killing birds in the pasture at 50 yard , at least everyother shot . nobody ever took me by the scruff or the neck and showed me how it was done , i got all my info by ready about fred, howard , ben ,. and i figured you were suposed to shoot as far as you wanted to .heck they did .i have shot alot of deer out to 50 yards . they were alot easier to hit than birds :) .. hoot

this is a very interesting book by the boone and crocket club...and the pics, the old cars, the clothing they wear...takes me back to the days when i first started bowhunting deer...also i have realized thru this book that my first bow may have been purchased in 1963...instead of 64...anyway i too think its very interesting...boone and crockett club deserves credit for a great book...:bouncy:
