View Full Version : Bow Season's Opening Day.....

I suppose it means something different to all of us. To me it is the most excithing day of the year. I don't hunt small game, so for me each year this marks the first day of hunting season. It is the first chance I get to put on the camo and pursue the elusive whitetail. This creature has not been hunted or harrassed for approximately 10 months. They are often in somewhat of a predictable pattern and the opportunity to score a buck early is enticing. Now, it has never worked out for me that I could harvest a buck on opening day, but I have had some very close calls. Maybe this year will be different. It's what I say every year and that's just another part of the appeal of opening day.
The pre-dawn walk in is exciting. It invigorates my soul as all the feelings and anticipation of the hunt fill my thoughts. I have waited for a long time for this day to come and as the darkness fades and the light fills in the woods I am on high alert. I scan my surroundings and see different shapes in the distance that look like deer but turn out to be a log or a weird patch of weeds.
There's just something about it. Now that it is less than a week away, I can honestly say that I am ready. Good luck and be safe.

To me it is the most exciting day of the year.
Never been any truer words. I try to never question another mans drive or passion, but I do when I hear guys bad mouth hunting opening weekend, or bad mouth other hunters who choose to hunt opening weekend. I have to question a person’s drive that does not want to end 10 long months of agonizing waiting by taking advantage of the very first chance to get back in the saddle. Even if you are a trophy hunter, isn’t it hard to kill a deer from the couch?
The opening day of bow season has eclipsed the opening day of gun season over the past few years as the most important day of the year for me. It’s like Christmas morning, the first day of school, your birthday, the first day of summer, and Easter morning all wrapped into one exciting day. I have spent the past four openers in a tree. I have only seen 3 deer, but they were honestly some of my most enjoyable hunts.
I for one am pumped about Saturday. I want to wish everyone who will be out this weekend the best of luck and please be safe. To all members, the time we all look forward to is here. Best of luck to all of you for the duration of the season and let’s show the world why Ohio is one of the premiere states in the country! Be safe and ethical. God Bless.

It's not really the most exciting day of the year for me in terms of hunting, but it is way up there! I can't hunt the morning Saturday because of an appointment, but my buddy and I will be perched near a plot we planted that is getting heavy traffic that afternoon. We're hoping to get a doe kill on camera, so hopefully all goes as planned.
Best of luck to everyone. Be safe and have fun! :D

I too am very excited for this opening day weekend. I myself will be hunting all day saturday and sunday, no matter what. I will be hunting near the bedding areas morning and night and then in my climber in a beautiful funnel where the deer highway is during the day. I cant wait.

I'm looking forward to getting out but I know there are better days to come later in the season. Just being able to get out get back into the bowhunting groove will be great though. The cooler weather rolling in will definetly make for some enjoyable times in the woods.

This opening day I get the pleasure of filming my 15 year sons very first bowhunt. He has 4 gun kills but this is what we both have been waiting for. Hit or miss-deer or no-deer it will still be the best day of the season for me.

I can't wait until this Saturday....I purchased a climber this past weekend, and I've never used one before. So for me, it's a chance to get some practice in with the climber and possible take that monster buck on the first day. Opening day couldn't come soon enough.........

You'll believe anything......HAHA!
I always look forward to the opening day. The anticipation just kills me.
This year is definitely different than the past years because I will only have the first half of the season to hunt before I will be down and out. My killin' time is VERY limited.

I try to ignore the fact that it is so close, but it is nearly impossible. I also try to ignore the mental image of Azzy hold his fancy stick with no clothes on surfing the net :nono: Is it Saturday yet?

Must be the one I saw in Belmont County in 2002. I haven't figured out if you're a joker, a troll, or just full of **** just yet. But you're somewhat entertaining.

Nope. But my ex- old lady lived in Belaire Heights and I got off of 76 somewhere just past the mall to go to her place. There is a powerline right-of-way out there and I saw one of the biggest deer I have ever seen in the fall of 2002. Giant 10 standing about 50 yards from the road. Let's put it this way. My Dad killed a 163" in 2004. Dad's deer was not as big as this deer. I would guess him in the 170's at the time. Way more mass than Dad's.

I will never forget that buck as long as I live. I drove by and caught a glimpse. I turned around in the next driveway and he was still there. I watched him for a minute or so. One of those deer that moves his head and then his rack moves. They were logging the top of that ridge at the time. I bet it is a jungle there now and you know the big boys are in there.

You know where Pleasant Grove Cemetary is over by Crescent Road I think? Some kid was telling me about a deer they used to see in the cemetary when I was dating that girl. Said is was a real monster. They took me up there one night to see, but I think they were just messing with the hillbilly from down south.
