Well team let's get this thing rolling. I'm ready and I hope you are likewise. After getting those pictures of that buck, I have decided that this will be a year that I will put in more time, be more disciplined, etc. so I'm going at it hard, pulling out all the stops. I'm an avid golfer, and struggle with passing on those good days to golf verses hunting, but I have just about sworn off golfing for the rest of the year and will hunt instead. Good news is that outside of the big one I have the pics of, we likewise have another one in there that hits the 150" mark, so either one of them is what I am hunting for. Come mid-Nov or earlier according to the rut and weather, I may settle for one in the 130+ range but other than that I am holding out. I will take a doe early though, one of the land owners wants one, so if I am in a morning hunt and it is getting late in the day, I'll go ahead and take one.
Have we got a 4th yet?
Good luck.

As soon as you have about 6 months off from the golfing, we will hook up, I might have a chance by then?

Isn't that the guy whose family and friends killed like 14 bucks last year

Yeah ,Buckslayer is no doubt a "killer"... was gonna be our ace in the hole, there was no doubt in my mind that he'd be getting us some points. Rules are rules, replace him. We will have problems though if we end up with another gal...we've already came up with a name!

Team #6 can remain three guys and a gal (I think ;) ).
We hate to exclude anyone but in everyone's best intersests we must move on and get teams set.
Your replacement for Buckslayer1 is Alternate #4 stumphole
Good luck and have fun!

No problem. Ladybowhntr is up in Wisconsin deer hunting right now. She will be back on line in a week or so. She actually lives in Wisconsin as I understand it but will be hunting here in Ohio for a limited amount of time. I believe her name is Debbie, Oldhat is jesse and I am Ed.

Yes, I live in Fairborn (Out towards Yellow Springs). I own a business in Enon (Direct Mail Company, Name is MVMI, we print and provide mass mailing services), Hunt in Greene, Clark, Pike, Ross, Lawrence, and Jackson counties. I am originally from Ironton Ohio (river rat).
That about sums it up.
Glad to see you onboard. I am sure we have passed on rt 35 many of times heading South. I drive a White 2000 Tacoma TRD X Cab, A White 2001 Toyota 4runner, and sometimes My Old ladies Black 2007 Toyota Sequia Limited. I typically drive the 4 runner, so if you see it blowing by you at 90 miles an hour you'll know I am heading south to Bowhunt. Has a Vote for "W04" sticker on the back window.....you'll see me, as I never gets passed, it's a personal accomplishment of mine. So if you see me, flash the lights and let me know, maybe could hook up for a breakfast or something around Chillicothe one morning on our way south.

Right off of 35, about 8 mile towards Rio Grande once you get past the 32 exit. Private that borders some coal company land. Although I have really given up on the property and focus more on Ross & Pike Counties.

May have seen you a time or two, usually we travel across 70 to 270 and 33 south. I usually drive a F-150 Super Crew 2 tone brown with a Browning Buck sticker in the back window. You know where the Tavernette is? Good place to eat in your neighborhood.
I have a material handling company in Dayton, maybe I'll make a call to your place and we can get together for lunch.

Sure, give me a buzz sometime at the business 864-2677. You gotta get through the front office gals though when you call. When they tell you I am not in (I don't take too many calls), tell them that you are a "hunting buddy", and if I am there, they'll let you through to me. Only other way is to say you are a "golfing buddy". Gals do a pretty good job of screening all the calls, and if I say "I am not in for the day", then that means I don't want any calls...but for my buddies, I'll always take a call.
Whenever you see some free time coming up let me know. If you are a golfer, then I'll have you out to Greene Country Club for lunch, a beer (maybe more than a few of those), and 18 holes of golf. If you can't swing that, then we'll get together for a lunch and shoot the breeze....my treat.

Team,
Just wanted to let you guys know that a supplier of mine treated me to Trout Fishing yesterday, although I ain't the greatest fly fishin' guy in the world I did end up catching 7 Rainbows myself and he caught 11. It was at a pretty nice fishing club (ODOW Officials that happened to be there claimed it is the best one in Ohio). So I've got a freezer full of Rainbow trout (We were aloud to keep them all, and I took them all (18 of them)....hate to see how much that cost my supplier?). I'd invite ya'll down and I'd grill them one day, but it seems most are pretty far away. Stump, if you want one or 2 to grill, then let me know... since you are so close we could meet up for lunch and I could give ya a couple.
Most of these will be going with me when I camp. So when you guys are all eating MCDonalds, Burger King, Bologne, etc while you're on vacation hunting, you can say to yourself "Oldhat is eating Rainbow Trout" on the grill...hehehe, sucks to be me!

Blah, Blah, Blah I'll be sure to send you some pics of the salmon I catch this week up in Michigan. The average size is supposed to be 15-20 lbs. OH, and we fish for them "fair chase", not in some stocked/baited trout pond. :tsk: Did you have a piece of corn on your flies? :cheeky-smiley-022:

Hey, Oldhat, I got some trout in the freezer for just such occasions as well. Also have some smoked catfish and, boy, they are good!!! Where I hunt there is no McD'2 or anything else. Bring or kill it and grill it. Had some mighty tasty back straps Tues night about 2 hours after the kill. A doe earned me an earn-a-buck tag!!! It was so hot the opener (except Sat AM) and following days. Just hunted evenings. Saw a nice young 10 pointer right under me Sun night but let him walk. No sticker yet. He was in full velvet still which is rare in Buffalo Co by opener. I might just have taken him had I had the sticker. May hunt next week 2-3 days and the be in OH 1st of the month!!! All jazzed up for that!!!

Good deal on the doe. I guess I do not understand Wisconsins laws, so it seems you have to take a doe before you get the buck tag? Good idea actually!
Preparation H: (Big H)
I beg your pardon, but it was a stocked trout stream, not a pond (hehehhe). Big, difference there!
Well, we've got one deer down on the team, just a little warm up for the Ohio season.

Oldhat,
Some units (I think 34 this year) are Earn-a-buck units. (Herd control units). The WI DNR(:dizzy: ) wants a 2:1 doe to buck take, to get the population down and was trying last year and this to do away with the Oct T-zone, 4 day hunt(gun doe only). If "we hunters" don't do what the want, we get the Oct T-zone back. We already have a Dec T-zone, which is not bad due to it's after the rut. Oct, really messes it up.
In the CWD zones, it's earn-a-buck, but, the tags are unlimited, whereas, the rest of the state it's 1 buck per archery and 1 per gun.
The earn-a-buck tag is a sticker you place on your archery (or gun, if during gun season) and is good for this year or next if not used in the current year. I had 1 last year, but didn't get to use it or earn any as I was sick a good part of last season. All better now.
Stump,
Welcome to the team. We should do well. :bouncy:
Got a pic sent to me of a 120-130 class buck roaming the area I'll be hunting in OH in a about 10 days.
Gonna treat myself to steak and lobster tonite.  Just the way I like it as I'm grilling it myself!!! Smothered in baby bella shrooms and lots of garlic butter. And Carrot cake.
I'll work it off the next couple weeks at work and hunting. :bouncy: :D :bouncy:

I see that you must have a dictionary Oldhat, you finally spelled it right. Try to keep the rest of the group on their toes while I am gone. I will be sure to take some pics up in Michigan over the next few days. We will be on the Pere Marquette River, chasing salmon, only problem is, the weather is too warm right now for a big run in the rivers I guess. If you are nice, maybe I will send you some smoked salmon when I get back.

Well team, we gotta get this thread of ours pumped up.
What's new?
Me, been talking a lot of crap on the "smack Talking" thread...maybe getting a little bit obnoxious, but hey, it's all in fun. Been busy online tonight, watching my 3 kids for the evening so I've been shopping.......
Yesterday I guess I spent about $500.00 on propane "everything".... shower, stove, space heaters, and lanterns...all for the camper. I guess I could of just bought about 1/8 mile of extension cords and plugged up the camper to the closest electrical outlet....but man, that's a lot of cords...so it's propane all the way.
Tonight, I was laying around thinking how horrible it is to listen to my hunting buddy Tip moan and complain at the camp (it's hot, It's cold, I can't sleep, I'm hungry, I ain't seeing anything...blah, blah, blah), so I need something to do. So, I spent some more money, this time on a night vision monocular. I figured it would be perfect to slip into the edge of one of those 5 acres fields where one of the farmers has hay bails, take a squat and watch some deer funnel through. Researced a lot on these things and think I got a pretty decent one, can identify what an animal is at about 1200 ft, and can see in detail (rack) at 800ft and in. Is a new "digital one" that gets rid of all the fuzziness that is associated with NV devices... should be here on Wednesday. I got a 5x42 with the built in infrared illuminator (IR spotlight... not able to be seen by the naked eye or by a critter). So it may be amusing, or I may have wasted my money?
I also picked this up because as much as I hate it when going into most of my stands I have to cross through meadows, could be 2 acres or up to about 15 acres, but I typically spook deer. I figured this would let me glass before- hand and back off of them and not spook them if I don't want to. Also, you know how when it is hot we get the deer moving right at dark, you can hear them but you can't see them off the stand...figured I could see them now and know what they are. We all like to think it was "the big boy", but I guess now I'll figure that it has more than likely been does all along!
Will be camping this weekend and trying out my new night vision garb. I used to wear them a lot in the 1st Gulf war and they were pretty cool, I hope I get the same enjoyment out of these by using them when actually viewing wildlife....will let you guys know how well they work on my neighbors on Wednesday evening!

Preparation H (aka Big H):
Typo's are one thing, but you using the term "spelled" is not proper. By using "spelled" you put the "hoodoo Voodoo" (spelling?) on me (pardon the pun, just a little jockularity). So, If you would have said "spelt" then that would be the proper use of what you were trying to say/convey!
Hope I have cleared that all up for you. English is the primary language here in the states, time for you to "catchup". All in all, don't fight it, because in the 5th dimension of the 4th hypotneuse minus the pythagorean theorum I am always right (only one exception is when I argue with my wife, she's the only variable and is true to the fact that she is always changing). Did I mention that I am an engineer and never did think about majoring in any pansy "English" studies (outside of Gen Eds)?
Oh, and it's time for you and Buttmaster to quit stalking me on my team thread:tsk:

You need some help Ed? I kinda heard this Tarzan roar coming over the internet!...figured i'd better check in;) .
Debbie:
Did any in your group take a buck yet ther in WI? Hope you have some luck on a buck this coming up hunt. Do you get to jump around between states later in the season, or do you just kinda do that around the 1st of the season? Sounds like a lot of fun. I used to jump around into Ky a lot a few years back. Their deer herd has made leaps and bounds over the past 15 years....slowly catching up to Ohio. IF we could get Penn on baord (which there are some efforts there) then it would be 3 great states. Problem with me hunting Ill or WI, Iowa, etc is the drive....just a little far or i'd be there.
Ed, you missing the opener also hunh? Looks like Stump and myself will have to pull our weight a bit on the opening weekend. Hold down the fort for us.

Neither me or my partner has taken a buck yet, If I had had my Earn-a-buck tag I would have had, on the 2nd evening, a real nice, young, 10 pointer still in velvet. Have seen some other bucks, but, not in shooting range.
We'll be hunting our land in WI 1st part of the rut then down to ILL 2nd week Nov. Usually, last week of OCT-end of 2nd week in WI is a great time. Hopefully things will work out the way we want, we do however, have leeway as to when we go to ILL as far as the landowner is concerned. Work being the variable.
The last couple day in BC, showed me some deer, some young bucks but not in shooting distance. The only deer in shooting distance was the one I saw last nite leaving my blind. Walked 10 yards around a bend and, with the full moon, there it was 25 yards away. Looking at me, but, not able to figure out what I was, xtarted towards me. Would stop and just look. It even let me put my release back on AND nock an arrow. Came in to 15 yards of me. It was a good 15 min after legal light. I thoughgt it was cool I could do what I did do. then it trotted off, no blowing or anything.
You can reall yhave some neat experiences with deer without shooting them. However, telling about a great shot or a huge set of antlers would be really nice, too. Soon.

Well Team I managed to hunt yesterday. Seen 5 does yesterday. Over slept this morning, alarm clock went off for some reason at 2:00 in the morning (even though it was set for 6:00). Tip (hunting buddy) reached over and turned it off, then we went back to sleep......he did not however turn it off and reset it....so, at 7:45 we got outta' bed......yeah, too late. I did manage to walk back on the small 30 acres we have the camper on and hunt from the ground, seen a 100"-110" buck off at 80 yards or so. Decided to call it quits today since it was going to hit 80 degrees or so. Done some additional scouting around a small section of the 600 acres we hunt and found 2 dead does, one in one pond and another in another pond....EHD got them. There are only 3 more ponds on the property and hopefully we do not find any there. That 1st frost needs to get here to get rid of those gnats....would hate to lose any more than the 2 we already have.
On the good side of things, Tip and I did manage to find somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 new scrapes, and some really impressive rubs. The 20 or so scrapes and 15 or so impressive rubs are all in the same area, there is maybe a 5 acres secluded hay field and they are on the edges along it. No doubt one deer (or more) is getting a bit pumped up. I'd say just about every hanging over limb has a scrape under it along this small field edge.
The camper is set-up, and will stay that way for the rest of the year on the property I hunt...everything is ready to go, now we gotta get rid of these 80degree temps and my hunting year will be perfect. Looks like it's gonna be warm all week hopefully the weather will break by this coming weekend, gonna be hot all week.

I wish!!!! Too Hot!!!! 90's. My hunt got cut short by 2 1/2 days due to my left knee got knocked out of joint when the dogs were rough housing in the yard and barrelled into me and down I went (after Thurs AM hunt and didn't see a thing). If any of you have ever had your knee out of joint, you know the kind of pain I'm talking about. Went to the ER and was put into an immobilizer. Drove home today (with an ace wrap on as the immobilizer was not going to let me get my leg into the car, and, I went alone). My entire leg from the knee down is swollen now.
Saw a ton of does, a spike, a 6 pointer and a nice buck going up the bank of the river behind me. Too far for a shot for me. 50 yards. Took a shot at a doe at 25 yards, she jumped the string and over her the arrow went. She then went to a 35 yard window and I again shot, but hit a branch. With that the other 7 does and the spike left the plot, but, she STAYED. Almost stepped into another 20 yard window but didn't. Big bucks were not seen. Just too hot.
I'm bummed to say the least, not only lost 2 1/2 days of my trip to Ohio, but not sure when I can get into a stand again. Will have to see my primary MD on Monday and may need to see an orthopedic and maybe an MRI to see if something was torn. At first I thought a felt a tear. But, not sure at this point. Not near as painful as at first, and I'm able to put almost full weight on it with a crutch for support.
If you can get an alternate for the team to replace me, I recommend it and would fully understand. Sorry to let you down. :( :(

Ah, with a little luck and rest you'll be back on your feet in no time!..We'll wait you out!
Hope that heals for you. Not to diminish your injury, but I herniated 3 discs in my back in the later part of August/1st of September, after an MRI, Neurologists checking me out, doctors visits, chiropractor, etc. I didn't think I'd be even able to pull the bow back for hunting season, damn near gave up golf to not chance it (was playing at least 5 days a week). But anyway, they gave me some real good drugs. Never popped any nasty "pills" in my life, but man, that Oxycodone put me on cloud 9 for about two weeks, I layed around and healed up/am back to golfing and shooting bow in just a few weeks. No pills needed and I feel great, so, kick back and take it easy for a week or so and see how things go. Go get you a blind in about 2 weeks and set up that and hunt from it. Definetely take it easy though. If you get back on your feet and can stand to come back to Ohio, let me know, I'll show you and your hunting partner some places to hunt on public land that you should be able to get a decent buck at.
Was thinking about you all week and wondering how you were dealing with the hot temps we have been having.....now I realize that the heat was the least of your worries. Good luck, and you are still on the team...ain't no way we are changing our name!

Thanks for the well wishes, guys. I am walking better on it today.Am able to bear more weight on it. Still pretty swollen( but the lower leg and foot isn't as swollen as yeaterday) and am not able to bend it much. Thanks for the offer, Jessie. Will have to see how I heal. I happened to put up a nice blind that Scheels makes, similar to the Matrix 360, but not even half the cost, just before I left for OH. I think that and another blind, that's been out since spring turkey season, are gonna see my presence alot more than I planned this year.
Hope you guys get a cool down soon. Get the deer moving, at least, more of the bucks. The does are moving. But the boys just don't want to spend any energy at this point.

I fell on my knee while deer hunting two years ago and my knee swelled up like a watermellon. It took about two weeks before I could do much with it but it healed nicely and I was right back to deer hunting. Take it easy on the leg and you will be back out in no time. We have no intention of replacing you. Good luck and let us know how you are progressing.

Team,
Well we are "on the board" I took a doe on Friday evening. The only access I had to a camera was through Tip and he only had a 35mm camera, so we will have to wait until we get the film developed then I'll have to scan it in......may be awhile before we finish the roll, at least 10 more pics on it, so who knows when I'll get a pic from Tip (whom is my hunting buddy from this site).
I seen 8 does on thursday evening and had a 110" 9 pt at 15 yards 2 times. On Friday I decided I'd go ahead and take a doe...the landowner said he wanted one on Friday afternoon, and with the weather going to be cold all night and halfway through Saturday I figured it was just as good as a time as any to go ahead and take one so I went on a "doe hunt" and got me one in the 1st half hour in the evening, got on the stand right at 5:00 and arrowed her at 5:30. She came in with a smaller one and I drew on the smaller one
1st (better eating, plus I like keeping big mommy does around if at all possible) but anyway, I had the lil one at 10 yards, noticed buttons (I always check!) and decided that since mommy was there at 15 yards I'd go ahead and take her. Was a hell of a shot, she made it about 25 yards and her back legs gave out, she stumbled to 30 then fail right over. Got a nice pass thru shot on the heart.
I went to my "buck" spot about 1 mile away on the property and hunted it all day Saturday and absolutely "blanked"...been a long time since I been on a stand and not see a single deer. But again, it's my "buck spot" and I typically don't see a lot of deer there, but when I do it's usually a good one.
I seen 3 bucks this weekend from the stand, One I had at 15 yards (110" 9 pt), seen a differend 9pt (maybe 120")off at about 50 yards, then seen a 6pt this afternoon that is gonna be a thumper next year if he makes it through season. For a 1.5 year old deer, he's a good one (if you can believe that a 6pt is a good one, then this one is).
Anyone here get out this weekend?

Jesse,
I'm hunting my property in Jefferson Co. that we practice TQDM. We have way too many doe. I concentrate at taking mature does with button bucks. By harvesting the momma we shorten the home range potential of the button buck. When he matures his home range is hopefully slighted and he calls my property home. So far we've taken 4 doe and one 2 3/4" spike (1 1/2 year old). I'm personally permitted 6 deer but I plan on taking 4 this year. My family eats at least 3 deer annually and I'm into sausage making now so I need the extra ground meat. I've been on 4 hunts and have taken 3 does so far which is my personal limit. Its buck season now and I only have two shelves left in my freezer. I carry 12 power binos to check for bumps before I shoot to avoid taking the alusive button buck. Come on over and help me equalize my buck to doe ratio.

As of right now, I don't think Buttmaster has any points...I've yet to see a "tagged deer" pic from him. And from the looks of it, he drug those deer to a good spot for a photo-shoot without a tag on it.....you know that is illegal! Before you attempt to move a deer, you must put your temporary tag on it...I know I do. We should think about Dq'ing him, in a contest, we should all have to follow the rules and laws for the points to be counted.

Quick report as I am home for the evening, then back out at it again tomorrow.
I first will say that I have seen more chasing over teh last few days then I have in a long time. One was a big boy and I blew the shot. He's a basic 10 with 2 stickers to make him a 12. It happened as soon as I pulled my bow up in the morning, untied the string and I hear a grunt about 40 yards off and here he comes. I shoot him for 30 and he was about 25yards, shot right over him. Probably go right around 150 net. After I missed he hunkered down in a thicket right behind me at 25 yards and I got to watch him for about 20 minutes with no shot.
I seen a lot of bucks but only 2 that were "mature". My best day was Sunday morning when I seen around 12 different deer, 5 were bucks, and they chased around me for about 45 minutes.
Beggers night tonight for the kids then I am off again to camp.

Hehe, been a long time since I flat out "missed". Was hunting a stand for the first time, was that "one last stand" that we had to hang a few weeks back. That Buck actually stopped right where he was pose'd to..in the open. I seen the spot before he got there and said "hell that's 30 yards, I'll shoot him there". After all was said and done and after I got to really look around from the stand, it was 25 yards. I even held my 30yard pin a bit high because I typically error in judging by being to short. Oh well, comes with the nature of bow hunting.
To all my teammates and others that read our thread...If you are not out for the rest of the week then you will be missing the best hunting around. As mentioned, I have seen more flat out chasing from the smaller bucks over the last few days then I think I have ever seen in 25 years of bowhunting....this all started on Friday evening. It's typical that the "small" bucks are about 1 week premature before the doe goes into heat....so, starting Thursday for the next 7 days should be amazing.
I would also like to mention that when I seen the 12 deer and 5 of which were bucks, I did not see my 1st deer until 10:15 in the morning...I seen 12 deer from then until around 12:00. This morning I seen my 1st deer at 10:30 and it was a young buck, followed by another young buck at 11:00.
So hunt hard the next week or so and stay on your stand until at least 11:00!

I meant to also say that over all the bowkills (somewhere in the 30's) that I have had only one was over 25 yards. ......I ain't used to shooting that far. If he would have cooperated, he would have been inside of 20 yards. The one outside of 25 yards was actually 50 yards. Sure some are gonna say "why did you shoot that far"...well, this buck stopped with his vitals showing right between the split of a big tree, told myself to go ahead and shoot that either i hit him perfect or the arrow would stick in the tree. Hell, I did't even know I hit him until I seen him go down about 100 yards away!
So anyway, I like them within 25 yards. Sure, I've got 2 bigger bucks in there and I'll probably be glad I missed, but anyone that can let a 150" deer walk has a lot more patience than I do, those dudes get arrows heading their way no matter how many big deer are in the area.
In closing: I'm a hunter, not an archer, I am sure I'll get at least 2 more opportunites at a mature buck this year, maybe more.

Hey Buttmaster:
You say you go after "mommy" does with button bucks in order to try and make it more apt for the button buck to stay around your area....what are your results? Can you definitively say that you are achieving the desired effects?
Just curious to studies on this or if you think it is working. I'm not much of a doe killer. I betcha' I have only killed 3 does over the past 10 years. But, if I went after mommy with a button in tow, then I might just try it.
Oh, I don't kill many does because the farm land I hunt on the families gun hunt and they are hard on the does.....they don't kill many bucks though...that's a good thing, and I ain't about to show them how.

10-30-2007, 10:24 PM
Yes, the affects are good but you have to kill Momma doe the first couple weeks of the season to prove ideal results. After the 3rd week of archery Momma doe kicks her son's out of the herd in order to achieve Mr. Buck. The boys go away as loners if I kill their Momma; obviously shortening their home range. I've read many articles on it and I'm a believer. If you shoot a doe now you may ruin the buck that's trailering her. Practice..... the "Oldhat likes milk" campaign next year. As you see, I hurt a few does this early season. I hope it pays off in 2011.

No, one of the property owners. A family member was on the farm and he had a restraining order against him. Well, he decided to call the sheriff. Well the Sheriff showed up and the restraining order had expired so they arrested him for calling in a false report. His wife had no cash available until today (banks closed and no debit card), so I went and bailed him outta jail. Sheriff told us to stay off the property until the matter is all cleared up, so there goes my season! I do have around 400 acres remaining there to hunt, but this is the "good place". Once it is all cleared up, I hope I get "life permission" to hunt his farm for getting him outta the slammer.

Hhehe, Tip has been his usual bad-luck self...heheh they say you make your own luck, but he makes a "crap luck" sandwhich and eats it damn near everyday.
He was hunting another one of the properties, he 1st had the guys brother drive his truck in (to a secluded field back in the woods) then get out and walk around for a few hours. Once he left, the neighbors came by his stand riding their horses (land owner gave them permission). I have hunted this property for 4 or 5 years and have only seen 1 sign of a horse being on it (and they were allowed back then also) and never seen them, but get Tip on a stand and wahlah, everything goes wrong...hehehe.
He hunted one evening and was getting dressed at the truck (putting on all his camo) and he put his belt on...well, he had drug it through a big ol' pile of dog "Sheeeet" and got it all over him....hehehhe. He had to take it back off, clean all the poop off if it and himself and get a stem from a leaf and poke the crap out of the holes in his belt. heheh, he had just sprayed that "$20" bottle of "dead down wind" all over him....I gues he wasted about $10.00 worth...hehhehhee
I did have a spell of bad luck. My damn release was not opening properly. I was missing the target by 2 or 3 feet at times. I finally felt it catch the teeth of the release on the way out (missed the target by about 6 feet then as it jerked the crap outta my hand/arm), then managed to have a new release in another bag I took to camp. I used the "new release" to take that doe with on Saturday, then lost it somewhere on the 60 yard drag to an access rd. So back to the old release and back to shooting at the deer target, back to shooting really bad, back to sticking arrows in trees behind the target (those damn deer targets are small when you are having problems and I only have a min pin of 20 yards) that is until I got the file out and had at it.
Need to get 2 new releases tomorrow.
Buckmaster:
I don't know about this weekend, but I may come over and join you for a day or so one day, thanks for the invite. How many acres you say you have? I think you can get by with 2-4 guys that know how to hunt on around 200 acres max, I wouldn't want to make a crowd of it though. I'm the type of guy that hates crowding other hunters. I actually got permission to hunt a farm while Tip and I were driving down the rd, I just pulled in, walked up to the door and asked. The farmer said that we could hunt it but that 2 others were hunting it. So I told him "Thanks but I hate to crowd/step on the toes of other bow hunters".
I do appreciate the invite though and may just take you up on it. I was thinking that I may come over in slug season (with bow of course) and help you police the area.

I've been out the last couple of weekends and have seen a number of bucks. This weekend had a spike both days, grunted him in right under my stand, let him walk. I've seen a little basket 8 several times and an 8 with a drop tine, had no shot but would have taken him if I could. Seeing a big bodied deer and have a blurry pic of him. That's the one I'm holdin out for. Good luck to the rest of you. Hope I can hold up my end.

I'm still "buckless" as of today. Back home now and taking a break for awhile.
Has actually been the "season from hell" for me. Lots of bad luck. Had a bad incident when I was hunting on Wednesday of last week. I was walking the property with a self-climber on my back right next to someone else's property (maybe 20 yards inside the property line), this "other property" was maybe 10 acres and had been clearcut this year by the farmers neighbors. Anyway, I'm slipping in real nice and slow with the self-climber trying to find a tree. I was in full camo and had a black toboggan (sp?) on, the first shot hit about 8 feet from me and the other 5-9 hit the trees/ground all around me. I dove behind a tree and started cursing/screaming....someone had cracked open on me with either a 9mm or a 22 rifle. 1st shot was followed by someone just un-loading. I actually think it was a 9mm because if it had been a 22 rifle they probably would have hit me/been a lot closer on the 1st shot. It was definetely a small caliber, 22 or 25.
I stayed behind the tree and peeked out the side and see 2 guys in a truck, they do not respond back to my cursing/yelling and after 10 minutes then go to cutting firewood (chainsaw). I then go back to the farmers house, ask him how his relationship is with the neighbors and we decide it be best to call the sheriff.
Now the only thing I can figure, is that these guys were maybe 180-200 yards away, and here I am walking through the woods with a black toboggan on. I was walking real slow, trying to pick out a good tree for the climber...and they figured my black toboggan was a turkey and they decided to open up on it. Now this is the only theory that I have, because I was walking through an open white oak flat/point that really looks like a park (no under-cover/growth). Either this theory or that they despised the farmer. The relationship was good with the farmer, so the more I kept thinking about it the more I got pissed. I was walking down a small point, and they were on the adjacent one slightly above me shooting down at me, again, maybe 200 yards max.
Sheriff was going to go talk to the land owner as she did not live on the property, from that point I decided that I'd give this 200 acres a rest until the authorities got to the bottom of it. I filled out a statement and gave it to the sheriff. He actually suggested to me and authorized me to carry a handgun while bowhunting on this property (I have no concealed carry permit) to defend myself if need be until he could get to the bottom of it. I thought that pretty outragous of the "deputy sheriff" to do that....because I would have no problem cracking some shots back at someone if it happened again...and I typially do not miss with a gun. Outside of the military this is the first time that I've been authorized to take matters into my own hands if need be.
So take this, with the other farm that I lost (200 acres) due to a family feud/me having to bail the landowner out of jail (I'm just a good guy) last week and it's been a season from hell.
Oh, I did manage to see that one buck that may go "booner", but I was slipping in earlier last week during the afternoon to get my climber, and jumped him outta bed about 60 yards from where my climber was.
Bad season thus far. Typically I'll "pass" on around 20-25 bucks each year, this year so far it has only been around 10.
I've got 2 farms here in Greene and Clark county that I can hunt, so I am gonna focus on them for awhile. Pike/Ross county where I hunt has got to be the "good ol' boy" capital of the world....they are ruff' down there, and they've got my season all whacked up.
That about sums it up. Of course I missed a basic 10pt (12 counting stickers) and passed up a really good looking 8pt (close to book, maybe would make it) last week, so it isn't like I have not had some opportunites.
I've had artillary rounds hit within 100 yards of me, but I've never had a bullet from a gun hit that close. Funny thing is that you hear the bullets hitting/zinging around you really right before you hear the crack of the gun, imagine a bumble bee flying at super-sonic speeds wizzing by you...that's what it sounds like.
I was almost a statistic.

Well team I managed to wrap up my season yesterday, brings me up to 2 does and an 8pt.
8pt will not "make the book" as there are a lot of deductions, but a nice old mature buck no doubt. I green scored him around around 128" gross, but will only come in around 118" net. Deer is packing an exceptional amount of mass as his bases were right at 5" and his measurements on both sides between his G2's & G3's were right at 5" inches on mass also. Deer desn't score well as his left G3 only comes in at 4" where his other is 7.5. G2's kind of clash also as one is 10.5" and the other is only 8". He appears to be a 4.5 year old deer though, as he was packing an exceptional amount of mass.
Got on the stand late (4:00 pm) was shooting the breeze with the farmer about playing music later in the evening as when I head to camp he always gets between 5-8 of his friends together and we all play music. Anyway, so I was running late, headed to my stand and spooked a deer from around it, got on the stand, was not there 10 minutes and had deer chasing on the hillside about 150 yards away....back and forth, running, lots of running. At first I thought it was dogs chasing, then when the "back & forth" started, I knew I had lucked into a late "hot doe". Watched 3 deer going back and forth, couldn't make out any racks so I figured it was "peckerhead" bucks chasing a doe, but told myself to stay focused because this time of year if there is a hot doe, who knows what will be on her....seen chasing for about 20 solid minuntes, and I mean dead sprinting by 3 deer... back and forth on the side of the hill. So, I see momma and 2 little ones off at a distance, maybe 130 yards coming from where all the chasing was going on, well they come right in to me at 10-15 yards. Fed around a bit, then perked up.....here came a yearling doe, jumps the fence and comes the 40 yards and is literally 3 ft from the bottom of the tree I am in.....she hits my scent and gets "jittery", stomps with her foot, looks around then decided to "head out", mommy and the 3 little ones run in another direction, kinda spooked them, but they stopped at 40 yards or so. Well, I hear a grunt coming in from behind me........turn my head and here he comes, trotting, comes by me at maybe 40 yards, gets close to mommy and the 2 little ones and realizes that was not what he was after, turns and starts trotting towards me, gets to about 15 yards, I go ahead and draw, put the pin on him and am getting ready to shoot (he had stopped) then told myself to go ahead and take him and to bury the pin and make sure of my shot placement/making a good shot...I let the arrow fly, it hit right where I aimed, he took off on a dead run and piled up after a 30 yard sprint, kicked once, then died.
I was "braggin" a bit with my hunting buddy Tip this evening, as my confidence in my shooting skills have been a nightmare for me over the last 3 years (yes, 3 years), well, I was bragging that I am "over it", because I took 3 deer this year, if you add up how far they ran after getting shot, you will be at about 70-80 yards.....3 bow kills this year and I got to watch everyone of them fall within 40 yards or so of my stand.
I had passed this buck up earlier this year, had him from 20-5 yards away for about 1/2 hour at the 1st of Nov and decided to wait as I had my heart set on a "bigger" buck and I knew this one would not make P&Y. Well, when I first seen him yesterday, I thought he was a different buck as I thought one of the farmers sons took him in gun season (due to the description I got), none-the-less I decided to go ahead and shoot him as I've pretty much put in too many days as it was not only getting tiresome sleeping in a camper (bet I spent 25 days in it since the 1st of Nov) but, I could tell my being "away from home" from the wife and 3 kids was wearing on my wife. So, this week I already committed to taking a buck if I think he'd make the P&Y minimum score. Well, as soon as I seen him on the ground I knew he'd be close but the 2 tines that didn't match the respective ones on the other sides would keep him outta the book, but not a problem as I had wrapped up my season with a nice buck, and in late December to boot.
Will post pics on the "team scoreboard" pic post thread in the next day or so.
Good luck guys, you can still take a nice buck late in the year as I have, so get out there, hunt and have a good time. I am heading out tomorrow to put 2 new big ol' corn piles out and the game cams....gotta see what all I have for next year.

You fellas are like a bunch of old hens cackling.....maybe you should take up quilting.
Well, I guess I'll have to upload my photos, and yes, we had to go get film developed. Tip and I are "low tech". Low tech in a sense that I take care of Tip, I get him permission to hunt on all this property, buy a camper, etc. and all he has to do is get a camera....and of course he gets the "old" wind type.....I think I could claim him on my taxes as a dependent!
Speaking of dependents, after putting out massive piles of corn today and cameras, I decided to cruise down the rd to a farm and ask for permission to hunt...now Tip never gets out of the truck as he is pretty damned ugly guy and fat (I feel folks will let you hunt, but if they think they have to cook for you, then they may say no), so he never ges outta the truck until he sees the conversation going well. So the deal is that I always ask. Well, I got us another beautiful 140 acres to hunt on, drove back in there and found a softball sized rub.....gonna have to get some cameras out soon to see what is on this property for next year!
I'll upload the buck photo here shortly for you all to feast your eyes on.

Q-tip for the little swabs that I used to clean my ear boogers out with after 5-7 days while at camp that later make a great stiring utensil/seasoner for my soup and clean right back up for a 2nd use for ear boogers.
Hunting Buddy Tip - for donating several arrows to me earlier this year after I had lost all of mine "shooting at leaves and trees while practicing" .
And last but not least-all of those Oak trees I leaned against and fertilized over the last 25 days of camp.

He also sent me this pic of a doe. I can't see a tag, so I didn't enter it into the contest for him yet. I wouldn't want to stir up any controversy or anything.

We will have to let him tell us Wally, it kinda looks like a broken spoke from a buggy wheel sticking up.
On another note, he sure looks like "Joe Cool" with his hand in his pocket and all, don't you think?

Or maybe that is how he passes the time in the stand? OldHat - Pocket Pool Champion of the South of Rt. 70 Deer Hunters Association.

hhehe, Joe cool ain't got crap on me....I'm cooler than the under side of a pillow. I tried to tell you boys that I am a good lookin' Mofo...that's where most of my sonsors come from, you know, Guchi, Versachi, Hillfiger, Gilette, etc.
My day job is modeling, I hunt to pass time in between gigs. I've been called by various outdoor products companies, but once I tried out therr stuff and they seen me in person then they decided to not book me because they thought I was much to good lookin' for folks to actually believe that I was a real hunter.
Oh, the tag is in the deer's left ear....right by the tip of the string on my hoodie.

Hehhee, all I have to say is that we all need to get together one day for a hunt. Tip and I seem to have a good time, laughing most of the time, and when we are not laughing we are "picking each others brains" about deer movement and certain little areas and how deer move through them. So a camp with about 10 of you fellas one day would no doubt be amusing to say the least.
I know Tip has a doe tag left and I could go get another, now only if Big H would invite all of us to his property for a doe hunt one day (lord knows he has to need some does managed, seeing how he's blanked this year).
I'd invite everyone over to where I hunt, but I don't own the properties.

Maybe everyone else is afraid to mention it, but I cannot see a tag in the doe's ear. I think we will need a close up pic to verify 45? BTW Oldwhack, I haven't blanked, you mustv'e been at the trailer with Tip or something. I shot a doe with my muzzleloader the second gun weekend. I just don't puff my chest out as much as you when it comes to shooting does.:cheeky-smiley-022:

Yep, another free breakfast :shhh: ;) :D
Right now, me and a buddie (a non-resident :cheeky-smiley-022: ) got a January weekend bow camp planned, 18, 19 and/or 20th. I plan on hunting the weekend before as well. Got room for 3 on the 11, 12, and/or 13th, then two the following weekend. Any interest, let me know, especially if you have a doe tag :)

Where you hunting at 45?
Oh, the tag is there. Not a problem though as I have another pic of a different doe that I can enter if need be.

You know I have never hunted Logan county. You close to Marysville or Belfountaine?
I can't say that I will be there as I do not know my wife's schedule but will in a day or so, but I may just have to drive up and put a doe hunt on with you.
What are your plans? Do you stay in a motel, a camper, or just drive back and forth? Are there treestands in place, or would I need to bring a climber? I'm not to hard to please when it comes to doe hunting, nor picky with does as I am on a buck, and mostly during January I get out just to break up the winter and don't expect much.
Let me know Deerhunt45 as I could potentially make it up, is less than an hr drive for me to the Belfountaine/Marysville area.

Hunt nearer Bellefontaine. Let me know. We can pm or email out the details. I have one weekend that is in stone, that is Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th. Hopefully Saturday is all it takes. I usually drive back and forth, about a 50 minute drive, but I can arrange adequate accomodations for a night or two :)
While we're on the subject of hunting, I got good news today from my man in the field that...well maybe I better not say, but it was something to the effect a few big boys made it through gun season so far :shhh:
Only one in "our" section muzzy hunting has already tagged a p&y 10 with his archery equipment :shhh:
Me, with the holidays and being sick the last week and working my tail off, well, glad it's almost over. I can't wait for a couple weekends bowhunting in January! Our early season stands are still up, however I need to hang one more (and I know where it's going) and move one. A climber would work out well, depends where you want to hunt. The scouting is done and contrary to what everyone else is saying, it is not hard to get on the deer. Adapting to the winter pattern and being mobile is a plus, being able to brave the weather is the hard part sometimes, at least for me as I get older than dirt. I really would like to score one for the contest this year, it's been fun :)

Oh, I'm not picky during a doe hunt, so I'll hunt just about anywhere near a field or in some green stuff with the wind in my face, don't care if I gotta use my climber or I simply climb on one of your stands. Now you know if I come up more than likely I'll give you the "Oldhat jinx" that I use on Tip and you won't see a damn thing, may drop your bow from the stnd, sights fall off, etc....just so you know I am warning you.
Let me see what momma has planned, I'll at least make it up for one of the days. If you ever are heading over to bowhunt beofre then, drop me a line, all I do in the winter is play guitar on the weekends, so I don;t need much notice in advance, as I'm really typically begging to get outdoors and do something....actually considering trying to catch a few smallmouth on Mad river sometime soon.
