09-14-2007, 01:25 PM
You have to have an old guy or you don't have any prespective! He already told me about hunting uphill both ways. What you need to watch for is the guy that doesn't talk much. Those are the ones that sneak up on you. We got two of them guys. And they are both in good areas.

Are weak link is old "Three deer Matt!" HAHA He is going to have a much better season this year if I have any say in it. He has a gem of a place to hunt this year too.

Jesse, how did the scoutin go? I saw one doe, walked a few new paths but saw no rubs, I need at least another scouting trip before i make a final decision. I am leanin towards a spot I have used in the past. Little oak flat in a creek bottom with lots of acorns on the ground. Should be a good season, that;s for sure.

bowhunter1023
09-17-2007, 10:08 AM
The property is not as good as I expected. It is littered with stripper wells and lease roads which makes access nice. But it is super thick, and I had a real problem locating a food source. There were a few postives in a 10 acre thicket that is basically inpenatrable and a large portion of the big right-of-way is 7-8 foot tall white pines. So I found some good bedding. I need to go back when the leaves are down. I found a few good trails and a rub or two, but nothing to get excited about. Just yet...

Takes some boot leather is all, right bud?

Takes some boot leather is all, right bud?

I wore some out. But I had a 17, 15, a 13 year kid with me. I wasn't gettin' much done beside baby sitting. I need to go back when I can focus. That's why I figured I would wait for the leaves to drop. I can spend a day stalking and scouting.

Dude, I am right there with ya. I had the wife with me and it would have been mean of me to drag her through some of the thicker stuff that I wanted to make it through. Hopefully I can make it some time before the opener, but i doubt I will.

Man, the doe I saw was well within gun range, and I had the wind in my face and there was a depression big enough for me to walk upright in. Would not have been hard at all to put on a stalk to within bow range. Not hard at all... I am gettin the jitters...

bowhunter1023
09-17-2007, 01:25 PM
Its gonna be here before we know it. I have a real good feeling about opening weekend if the weather coopperates. I will be in that buddy stand all weekend hunting or filming. I can hunt it on just about any wind but something Northernly. I built that wind row so they couldn't get down wind. They have to walk in front of the stand. I hope Jr. Plaid can go out but the local fair is that weekend and he will have to show and sell Saturday. I may hold off Saturday if he is going to be able to go Sunday. 14 yard chip shot. I think he can make that...

The only way I will hang my head in shame is if you take a picture in those wadders you wear all the time. At that point I will have to bow my head in shame of being involved in the same contest as a cow poacher as you. :nono:

Busted a nice 8 I had yet to see going to hang a camera last night. Bad part was I debating on hunting the stand that was within bow range of the buck and camera the whole way home. I elected to stop and let the dog play in the river instead. I knew I should have been in that stand...

Well fellers, sat in my sand alll day today. That's right, 12 hours. (got nothin better to do, waht would yu do???) I been jumpin deer left and right walkin in and out. Had a doe feeding on the ridge above me this morn, she never came down the hill though. Nothing else all day, then about 20 minutes before quittin time, I had a buck walk in on me, real tall fork horn 4 pt. Presented me a nice 30 yd. shot, but then I saw his buddy comin in. Real nice lookin 8-point. I would guess 120-130. Well, he slunked around, didn't present me too much of a shot, then I found an opening. Zing, right over his back.... I used my 30 yd. pin when he was actually at about 20 yds... DAMMIT!!!!!!!!! They were both gone after a bit of snortin and tail flaggin... I keep replaying it in my head... I ain't gonna sleep tonight... BUt I'll be back at it in the a.m. Looking to at least get a doe tomorrow.

set up a new stand on the big boy today, gonna leave him alone for a few days.didn't like the other stand,he's walking too close for an awful steep shot,i don't like to shoot that close, less chance for a double lung and sure would hate to poke a hole in him and not find em:yikes: went over to the other side of the farm for a doe this evening.grunted in a short tined 10,prob somewhere around 110-120.he messed around for 10-15 mins and about time to leave,a doe and two young deer walked in,wasen't enough lite to shoot,so i waited about 20 mins after they left and got down--end of story for today--:D

Headin' out tomorrow evening gentlemen. Weather looks clear, but it also looks a bit warm. I am not really anticipating too much luck, but you can't shoot em from the couch, can you? I am probably going to go out around ten and see if I can put a stalk on with the wet ground, then up in a stand for the afternoon and evening. Here's to hopin' that buck decides to come back in again. I won't make the same mistake twice, that's for sure! Good luck gentlemen!

This thing is well within our reach. I think it will take four does and at least two good bucks to win this puppy. I know if me and Odie score on our targets, and Matt gets lucky, all Holdren has to doe is pop something and I doubt we can be touched.

Yep, did I tell you I had a buck on Saturday I was almost able to put a stalk on? He was at the bottom of the hill that goes into the property, and he never had a clue I was there. There was plenty of available terrain that would have put me in range, but he had just stopped to eat a little and was just passing through. I am gonna start doing some rattling and laying the scent on thick now.

Got out for the first time this evening and as I was getting in my climber I noticed another hunter sneaking in along the property line. I got his attention and spoke with him and confirmed he had gotten permission from the land owner. So needless to say that ruined my evening, did not see anything let alone picked up some more competition cause he is hunting with two buddies. Guess I'll have to either work something out with the land owner or find a new place to hunt, not too many places to get.

10-29-2007, 09:46 AM
Thanks odie, the good thing is I got permission to hunt this prop. @ 6 years ago and have taken a nice 10 and a decent 9 point, and between me and my mom we've taken about 9 long beards, the best was a 21 1/2#, 11 inch beard, 1 1/2 inch spurs she got 4 years ago. I am thinking about asking him to consider leasing me the hunting rights next year, since he has already granted rights for this year. Last year I started hearing some horn rattling close to the prop. line during prime rut, I guess that should have been my first clue that my honey hole was starting to get competitive. I guess it goes to show where there is deer their is going to be a few bow hunters.

hello, anybody here??? going to move a stand tomorrow, move it on back into the mature timber a little deeper, try to catch them chasin.gotta couple of other stands we're going to hunt tomorrow.their are both in productive areas.the one stand is the same place i shot the 11pt last year and the other stand has had 2 real nice bucks taken from that area. one was a 153 and the other was a 159.my brother-in-law from Columbus took one in 2003 and the other in 2005. so much for my bull, any you guys seeing any good deer?

deerhunter_matt
11-06-2007, 10:13 AM
I have only seen the one good deer I missed, but that is it. Nothing doing this past weekend as far as chasing, but hopefully it will be hot this weekend. With the time change, I probably won't be able to get out anymore during the week, but this weekend should be pretty good. I am heading down to Jesse's Friday to hunt Saturday, possibly Sunday. I have Monday off, so I am probably gonna do one of my marathon sits if I haven't shot a buck by then. We are just that sleeper team, we came out strong at the start, now we are relaxing and waiting in the wind to pounce. I predict horn this week boys!

I have made the decision that I can be a dumbass and chase a buck I may never see and eat tag soup, or shoot what will satisfy my original goal of getting my first P&Y deer. I would rather fill my tag and not get Deuce than eat tag soup. Just can't take it again. So I got four days coming up to Git-R-Done. I'm leaving now to move a stand so I am ready to sit all day Friday. Let's get after 'em boys...

Sorry odie, been working and hunting when I don't have to work. A week ago friday was my opportunity to help the team out, had an 8 point at 10 yards broadside at fulldraw and noticed I couldn't see my pin cause my peep was sideways in the string. He had a 16 or 17 inch spread with 6 to 8 inch tines. Oh well that might be my only chance. Saw an 8 pointer tonite with his nose down and on the move. I have to work nites this week and will try to get out Wendsday and Thursday morning for a few hours. I have yet to see a hot doe, should be any day, so hopefully I'll get my chance.

had something happen to me fri morn that has never happened before.was in my stand and aprox 0815 a mature doe came running from my right.ran right under my stand and kinda stood there.meanwhile i was watching this 8pt across the fence about 60-70 yds.he heard the doe running,so he decided to come and have a look see or whatever was on his mind:bouncy:.he was walking over looking at the doe,i was watching him and the doe was watching me.he got within 25yds broadside,i looked at the doe out of the corner of my eye,she was looking at him,so i drew the bow,set the pin behind the shoulder, and i swear she had ESP,cause as soon as i started to let fly,she made this strange little snort,he dropped to his knees about as low to the ground as he could get without laying down, course the arrow flew about 2" over his back right on the mark.she ran about 10 yds, looked at me as to say ha ha ha,gotcha ahole.well i thought to myself, there has got to bea reason i missed that buck, next morning out of the same stand i saw Freak Daddy chasin 2 does, but no shot.so team mates,i'm damn sure tryin. i hunted everyday last week but one.not hunting today because of prior commitments.i just got the idea no one is posting because everyone thinks the oldman gave up,but i have spent countless hrs in my stand, sometimes its a chore getting their, but i hunt and i hunt hard.

First of all, a BIG congrats on the closing of THE FINAL CHAPTER on a best selling hunting book of "Odie's 2007 monster of a dream come true." As for myself I just got back from a week with the kids and wife at Walt Disney World. It was probably as enjoyable as your day with Freak Daddy, totally awesome. First off you are a total inspiration to me, for when I retire in 20+years that I will still climb that tree stand and have the drive and desire to persue the dream that you just made a reality. Just a couple of questions. How far was the shot? What broadheads and bow did ya use? Its been a real joy getting to know ya Odie. I won't do any bang bang hunting but hope to still do some late season bow hunts. :) :) :) :yikes:

I was able to help out a buddy by getting him some meat, and I was able to get me a monster doe for jerkey. The first doe I shot at 7:35 or so Friday morning. I think my Dad busted her out coming in late. She ran across a saddle on the neighbors and was running to my sanctuary. I stopped her just inside the property line at 100 yards and dropped her right there. The second doe I shot at my parents house later that afternoon. She was one of eight deer that got busted out of the neighbors field. The button buck was shot by a buddy of mine. It was his first deer, but he didn't want his mug on the internet. That is the biggest doe I have ever shot. I thought she might be pregnant when I saw her. Dressed at 150lbs. Should get me a ton of jerkey.

Jessie, are you sure that is not a hornles buck?that thing is huge!! congrats to you on them and enjoy your jerky.Aaron, thanks for the compliments,i realy appreciate that. i hunted him hard, spent alot of hrs on stand, passed up bucks for him. i shot at a nice 8pt,but fortunitly for me,i missed him.the shot was 22yds,he ran 40yds,and i was using 100gr Razorcap.i bought a Martin Bengal about a month ago, haven't shot a compound for a few yrs due to shoulder and wrist problems.i practiced for a couple of weeks, grouped good inside 30 yds and thought what the heck.hung up the xbow and used the compound.this has been a very good season for me,hunted with a young pup called bowtech_buster,very gung-ho hunter, met alot of good sportsmen on this web,and enjoyed this hunt with you guys(which by the way inspired me to keep after him, didn't want to let you guys down,so thank you to my teammates and a special thanks to buster) going after my other 5 pts in about a week.good luck to those whom are still hunting.thanks again guys

I have cameras out right now, and I will be running them hard for a month or so to see what I have going for me. I have a good spot picked out for this weekend. I am only hunting for myself Saturday morning, so I got to make it count. After that, its all about Tracie. I plan on bowhunting hard the last three weeks of January. I'm still hoping...

only got to muzzy hunt yesterday evening. aprox 4pm someone over in the woods next to my property shot, and a couple of minutes later this real nice buck came trotting out. he ran thru a gap in the fence toward me, i grunted him and he stopped aprox 25yds broadside and stood there for about a min.he is a real nice 10,i'd say mid 140's to 150.anyway he trotted over to this little thicket by my pond and layed down. i gave him a wide berth on the way in as not to spook him. when i got to the front porch i glassed him and he was still there. saw 2 other bucks (small 6's) and 3 does, which were too far for the taking.so its back to the bowhunting.any of you guys do any good?

No luck boys. It was a good day to be out, though. Weather was beautiful. I was set up near a stream, though, so it was a bit noisy and I couldn't really hear the rest of the noise. I know Jesse is witholding an extra 5 pts cause he is still holdin out for ol' deuce.

I am just waiting for the excuse so I can come down and kill those two annoying rabbits you got... A good excuse would be the end of the deer season, bunnies are open til Feb. 28th.

I think I got one more day left on Sunday, gents. It has been fun, and by far my most successful and rewarding season yet, even if I didn't bag any horns. More story to come after Sunday.

I am just going through the motions at this point. I inadvertantly switched to protection mode and have been avoiding my farm. I really believe he is not moving at all during daylight right now. He knows I am after him. Even the does are moving after dark in the area where he is. I just can't get close enough to their bedding.

It was a fun time for sure. And it looks like Tucky will be wearing a tutu in the near future! :D

I joined OS after the contest had already started. How does it work? Were teams assigned or did you pick them? When does everything begin for the next deer season?

There is a thread that explains it all, but basicly you sign up and pick a primary weapon (bow or gun) and then through a somewhat radom draw teams are assigned. I say somewhat random because they try and "balance" the teams based on years of hunting expirence and weapon.

It's been neat to watch this unfold from a non participant perspective. It looks like it has been a HUGE success and my hat's off to Ed and Charlie! I may participate next year. I'll be able to hunt a little more next year as well.

You didn't read the thread :cheeky-smiley-022: I described how I did it and it's all random if you ask me, no consideration was given to experience or age or anything. There was only one gun hunter entered so he was randomly placed on a bow team. It has been a lot of fun and I thank everyone for participating. To answer Heartlunger's question, we'll start a signup next August and do it again. It was great for the site. I think we all learned something and made some new friends. I let my team down this year but it wasn't for the lack of hunting. Hindsight is 20/20. I should have a taken a doe the 1st day out and I didn't.

To shoot a spike or wear a tutu  That's a tough one tucky :D

Great job LUNGBUSTERS :bouncy:

from what i understand, you can enter 2 does in you have not connected with a buck.BTW Jessie,i watched Freak Daddy for 3 years, just never hunted him.look at the knowledge you gathered this year about Deuces habits, next season he will even be so much bigger.

Not as big of an idiot as I am, I knew you could enter two does (no I did not mention it to you:whistle: ) and I was going to enter another antlerless at the last minute so you would lose and I forgot to do it. So I am equally or more stupid than you are since I will be the one in the tu-tu:p
