So is everyone making it out opening day?

I had planned on driving 1.5 hrs. to my parent's house on the eve of the opener and getting up early saturday for the 30 minuted drive to hunt. Theres a cocktail party I must attend Friday evening with my wife so now I must get up really, really early Saturday morning. I actually do not mind the drive or getting up early. I'm an early bird and the drive will give me some solo time.

I haven't missed opening day since I was 11 except for one year I was overseas in the army. I still came home and killed a buck that year. I'll be out on the 29 and the 30th. I travel 100% for my job and I don't have a local office except my home. So I have tons of home time to get out and hunt. I got back from a 2 day trip to San Diego last Sunday and don't have a trip scheduled until next Tuesday where I'll be in Florida for 3 days. Thats like 3 on, 8 off

I'm hoping I don't travel much in the next 3-4 months. I was told by my manager I may be going to China, Russia, Poland, Japan or Brazil. I don't believe that would be til January at the earliest. Something could come up at anytime and I could be sent out though.

I'll miss some saturdays or at least parts of Saturdays because I have season tickets to Buckeyes games.

All comes back to what makes you happy. I personally would let it walk. You could maybe do the same for the first week. Then, maybe the last week of season if your still interested in him and don't think he'll make it another year then take him.

Well buddy that all boils down to what you think. If you have seen bigger deer or believe bigger deer are on the property then I say wait. He's not the biggest deer in the woods and could stand a year or two more. You'll be surprised how much that rack shrinks once the wrapping comes off. I personally wouldn't take him because I know there has to be something bigger in those woods. Now if it's mid December and I haven't seen hide nor hair of a buck all season, that boy would have some problems. BTW it looks like that’s a new corn site and a new deer sucker you put out there. Maybe Mr. big hasn't found it yet. Do you have any other pics of bucks on that trail cam? My vote is to let him go for a while, we've got a whole season ahead before we have to settle for a deer. .

countyroad
09-14-2007, 06:29 AM
I would let that buck walk, but as mentioned you should take what you want to take. If it floats youre boat that is all that matters buddy.

Last year was the first year I had to eat tag soup since I was 10. I've taken my share of youngens. I have my own restrictions as far as the size I'll take where I hunt. I'd really like to see what happens in a few years with the buck quality after following my restrictions. Me as one person will not make a huge difference, but that's fine. I just wish I could get my dad to buy into it. I had a few oppertunities at nice bucks last year but had to pass for various reasons. One was just not a good shot considering the amount of practice time I had available last fall and another was just not a safe shot during muzzleloader season. During muzzleloader season I snuck up on a nice buck in his bed. Too bad he was bedded on a ridge with cows, oil well and barn in the not too distant background.

I passed several doe as well hoping there may be a buck on their tail.

i have a couple other bucks on the trail cam but that 1 is the biggest so far i have alot of doe and fawns they love that lick BTW i know it does not matter but i do not hunt over that spot that is just for the trail cam. 2005 i took a nice buck from that woods he made BBBC for me so who knows antoher might show up around rut. onthis property i have arrowed 3 bucks in the last 3 years all on the first friday in november hopefully luck is on my side this year

I see that team #1 is a hunter short. Has anyone heard from Yeley0437? What we have announced is that anyone who does not check in by noon on Monday the 17th will be replaced at random from the alternate sign up list.

I want to wish Team #1 the best of luck, good fortune to all of you. This is shaping up into a really fun deal. I think it's going to keep everybody hunting long and hard during the deer season. Everybody wins when that happens! Good hunting and by all means be safe.

Glad you're still around Yeley. We were hoping you would return. Glad to hear you were Elk Hunting. You'll have to fill us in. We'd like to see some of your trail cam pics (soon). :p

I'm all ready to go. I picked up some new gear at the Wheeling Cabelas yesterday and did a 3D shoot today. All I need to do is wash up my hunting clothes and make sure my broadheads are shooting good. I'll have to get it all together this week because I'll be in Lexington, Kentucky next week until Thursday.

thats awesome to know we have that quality of deer that close to home i need to wash my cloths yet but put out trail cam yest. at antoher property going to check sat. sometime to see whats in there have not hunted there for a couple of years going to give it a try this year. my main hunting area is looking good to not sure which one i want to start hunting first it all was makes you feel good taking a quality deer on family property. other than that how fast does every one think they will take there doe if you have bought the other tag? wheather wise sounds like we may get a frost before season opener.

Lookes good Yeley. Any more pics of that tall brow tined buck?

My dad checked the trail cam today and said he we got some small bucks and fawns with it. I put it in an area I've only hunted one time. I think it will be a great spot during the rut.

He said he did find a spot at the edge of the woods in an alf alfa field that was all tore to pieces. He said a blind man could tell that there were a couple bucks fighting.

He also said that there were quite a few scrapes showing up. (I'm sure all of this was made in the night) These cool temps probably had them going.

jackalope
09-17-2007, 08:06 AM
I saw a scrape yesterday, that made me stand there staring with my mouth open. I tell ya my jaw dropped, this thing was like 8 feet wide and there was a rub on every tree for 25 feet around. It looked like a pig had been rooting around. I was in a draw coming out of a bean field, the tops of the draw are thick with some good trails. And they all lead into this draw. The end of the ridges drop very steep into a flat wooded bottom that is a floodplain for the creek. I looks like all the deer in this big flat flood plain are using this draw to get to and from the bean fields. I trimmed some brush on the top of the eastern ridge looking down into the draw. it's shaping up to be a good ambush site. we'll see opening day.

Yeley0437

Well how is everyone one doing?

I was looking at the calendar to plan which days I may be taking off work for the rut and I came across something good and bad.

The good is that I have season tickets for OSU football games.

The bad is that they play Wisconsin at home on November 3rd and Illinois at home on November 10th.

If I could only be in two places at once.

I'm actually thinking of giving up my November 10th ticket to hunt. My wife will be out of town that weekend. It all depends on how my season is going by then.

I couldn't go Saturday morning because I didn't get back in Ohio until 2:00am that morning. I did get out yesterday evening to set up my blind for this mornings hunt. I set up the blind at 6:00 pm and within 45 min I saw a small 4 pt and a gigantic doe within bow range. Looks like it's going to be a good morning.

Man it’s freaking early, now I remember the one thing I hated about hunting season. Oh well I guess it could be worse, could be early and 2 degrees outside. I better enjoy these mornings while I can.

countyroad
09-30-2007, 02:03 PM
I scattered 3 on the way to my stand this morning. I couldn't tell what two of them were but one was a small doe.

Once I got on stand I saw 5. One yearling and a fawn at 7:30 that were running around for no apparent reason and then at 8:30 I had a doe and two fawns run by as a result of the neighbor's dogs chasing them.

Theres quite a bit of buck sign around my one stand.

Not sure when I'll be back out though.

10-01-2007, 09:32 AM
I am set up on a small ravine with a dry creek bottom in the middle. Both ridges and the bottom have heavy used deer trails and buck sign. about 7:45 I see a nice buck step out on the other ridge just below the skyline. Nose in the air sniffing. His right side was a good 4 point decent height 7+ on his G2 then he looked back from where he came and his other half of the rack was a crappy fork horn, and no brow tines, with no mass. He stepped off and the other buck moved into the same spot. He looked better he had a good 4-5 pt right side tall 8-10 inch G2. and he had good mass. I could see his other side was close to the right side. Then he turned and looked at me. No width, you could have jumped a spark between his 2 front tines maybe a 1 inch spread and his inside spread was about 2 inches short of his ear tips on both sides.

They were both on the other ridge and both presented poor uphill shots at 40 yards. I might have shot that 2nd buck if it was a better shot. I decided to let them walk this time instead of taking a poor shot. He'll be back by. Plus it was only day 2 and I believe there is something bigger in the area.

I don't think they winded me as a human. They both stood there for like 10 min with their nose in the air. They defiantly smelled something off, but I don't think they thought it a threat because there ears weren’t flopping around and their tail wasn't wagging. Then they just casually browsed down that ridge. I went over there later and there is an oak with acorns half the size of golf balls. But they definably smelled something. Maybe the plastic from my blind.

countyroad
10-01-2007, 10:45 AM
There are a ton of acorns dropping where I hunted. It was like walking on marbles. I had a little one come in to feed on the acorns and it's mouth was crunching big time. It sounded like my mom eating pork grinds.

I went out to the same spot this morning and got skunked. Dad blame red tail hawk landed in a tree about 100 yards away right at 7:30 and sat there until almost 11:30. He kept the whole forest yelling and complaining at him. The squirrels wouldn't quit barking and I swear I can still hear the beep - beep - beep of that chipmunk. The deer aren't going to walk through all that barking and beeping. Oh well, I guess he's got a better reason to hunt than I do.

Went out the day before yesterday and saw no deer in my doe spot but tons of crows.. Went back yesterday with the shotgun and a crow call. I didn't see a single crow but I did see 3 does and a small 6. While i was wailing away on a crow call! So I went back today with the bow and I saw 1 doe that never presented a shot and a flock of 30 crows.. All I have to say is what the Hell. Guess I need to start wailing on a crow call while deer hunting.

I saw 2 does a small fork horn and a basket 6 this morning. They all came down the same trail 50 yards to my left in the thick brush kind of at an angle and popped out 70 yards behind me... A still small voice kept saying, move your stand you idiot. so I moved it back up the spur about 70 yards. Now they have no choice to but to be within range. I know there is a big boy in the area. Just in the last week he has torn the place to hell. With rubs on trees the size of baseball bats and ones the size of broom handles just broke clean off. And a scrape the size of my truck hood.

I hope I get to see him much less get off a shot. Now it just comes down to ass in a stand. Those smaller bucks didn’t respond to a grunt or a bleat at all.

I was down in Vinton county all last week hunting. I took a 6 pt and my doe. Wish I didn't take the 6 but he was unique deer. I saw a few bucks that wish to ever loving God I had got a shot at.

We had a good week the 4 of us put 5 in the cooler and should have had more, I missed 2 does when I shot over them. and the other boys missed a few.

I saw 2 bucks that would have gone P&Y, and 1 booner, and crap loads of forks and spikes.

I was doing a stalk on Thursday and was standing in the open on top of a hollow and I saw a deer walking up the hollow towards me. It went behind a big oak at 40 yards and i drew. Then I noticed it was a spike. I didn't want to let down because he would have busted me and blew. So i held it. he walked within 3 feet of me... Ahhhyee that was awesome. He never even knew i was standing there.

I was hunting the low pines in my blind and had a row in front and an opening between the rows to my right. I was getting cold so I took my jacket out of my pack and started to put it on. To my right I saw a doe hauling butt through the pines. coming from behind me and passing to my front 70 yards to my right. Well that doe was busting butt running and I thought she had busted me moving. not 3 sec later I heard this crashing through the dead limbs in the pines and something that sounded like someone trying to start a chainsaw. just a loud but deep ruuump ruuump like 10 times. Then i saw him, he had his head laid back and swaying it side to side trying to get through those pines. I thought he was going to break his darn neck hitting those dead branches.. and right on his butt was a respectable 6 or 8 following. They got to the bottom of the pine thicket and that booner put the brakes on, spun around and slammed that 8 in the groin so hard it darn near sent him for a flip. then the booner put his nose to the ground and was off after the doe leaving the 8 standing there at 80 yards looking bewildered. He eventually, 2 min later got his bearing and was off again after the booner and the doe. .

I was sitting there in my blind, mouth open like a kid at Christmas with both arms in the air with my jacket half on.. Bow and release laying on the floor of the blind. I never would have had a shot anyway it all happened so quick. I would say it all took 6 sec.

I'll never forget that deep rumbling grunt that buck was doing. Guess that was a tending grunt.. And I don't think there is a grunt call that even comes close.

Yes, thanks Yeley. Too bad it was with a gun and not a bow, but I'll take it. I passed on several 1.5 year olds this year. I've committed to passing on 1.5 year olds.
