95% of my time will be spent at Jefferson deer camp. We've taken 62 deer off the property since 2000. We manage 5 acres of food plot over the 100 acre parcel. I also have 6 wooded acres in Portage that I may sneak to after work a time or two. I typically see 300+ deer per season so I can pick and choose which one will taste the best. By the way, I have 17 vacation days left this year, so more working on Fridays.

I will spend most of my tree sniping time in Belmont county on a couple different farms. Early season will be spent trying to put a deer in front of my 12 year old son. This will be his first year with a compound bow so I'm sure the added motion of drawing on a deer will be a challenge for both of us. He has shot three with a crossbow. I have a week of vacation saved for halloween week along with a couple of personal days. This always seems to be good week for me.If All goes as planned we should give them all a run for the money. Leaving in the morning for a three day golf trip so I will be down for rest of the week. :bouncy:

Well guys, after looking at the other team names, we should do OK, we will be up against the Butt Sniffers, a cartoon character with horns from the 80's, a team that couldn't come up with a name (#1), a foursome of Fools, and a bunch of teams that are already fighting amongst themselves to come up with a name. Lookin Good!

We'll be at the top. I'm good for a minimum 8 point or better and a couple does. My goal is to beat the 12 point I got last year, so I guess 13 or 14 is my magic number.

I'm ready, just need to twist some Rage broadheads on some shafts, dig out some relevant weather related clothes and I'm ready. I already have 5 12"x12" ice blocks made up. I do need to pickup a couple pair of boots. I'm down to two pair after last year's major boot purge. Snow tires come first.

deerhunt45
09-20-2007, 09:32 PM
I've never been Snipe hunting  :dizzy: :D

Buckmaster, those tips on the ice blocks and extra boots, you should post them in the Tips thread. Early season when the temps are warm, you have to get that meat cooled quickly and keep it cool.

Good luck...should be a great season for everyone.

Buckmaster
09-20-2007, 09:45 PM
I learned that tip from fishing on Lake Erie from some fisherman. Tupperware containers (or my company's parts bins) work great for making ice blocks. I build them like bricks. They last all weekend and can easily be stuffed inside a deer to cool it down quickly. Freeze a rope in the middle of the ice block and you can tie it between the hind quarters while hanging to keep the hind quarter cool, stuff another one in the chest cavity. Feel free to pass it along.

Hey 10234567......It's gonna be Team 15 "The Whiners", when this contest is over, I can hear it now, "if he would have just stepped forward one more step", "I had to go to the potty, so I was out of my stand", "he came in on the wrong side" etc.....

"I had to go to the potty, so I was out of my stand",

So, Bowhunter90210 must be a squatter. I never leave my stand; just unzip thy fly, whip it out, and take the 20 foot golden shower. It actually works as a deer attractant.

Good luck to my teammates tomorrow, if any of you are hunting. I will not be, too much stuff to do. I will be taking my youngest down with me tonight to pull my trail cam, and we are going to spend the night, check the food plots, and basically hang out. I have to have her back by noon for her 1:00 soccer game. I will wait till it cools down some before I start hunting very much. I may sit in the backyard a couple of times, we'll see.

I guess I will wish good luck to the rest of the guys/gals too, hope you don't burn out your good stands before "PRIMETIME"

I was scheduled to go to Jefferson Co. Appears I'm the only one interested of me and my 8 friends. No one wants to go this early to bag some does so I'm staying home and sleeping in. My trip isn't worth the $50+ gas bill by myself for the 70 degree doe. I'll be behind a Stihl MS310 chain saw this weekend clearing my vacant wooded lot for my log home. Good luck this weekend. I'll catch up next weekend for sure.

I am just getting started with smoking a few salmon fillets from my trip up to Michigan this past week. I took my game cam. down, and just checked the pics, there are a few tempting prospects, but not after my daughter and I saw a heck of a buck right at dark last night in our main food plot. We were eating Subway in the condo stand, and hanging out, there were 15 different deer out in the field. Things are looking good. Now I will set it up behind the house, and see what is hanging around back here.

Big H....Down in Jefferson I see. I was at my Portage property knocking down trees Fri-Sun for my next home. I have next Fri-Sun off so I was thinking of standing behind the chain saw all day Fri then driving to Jefferson deer camp Fri night. I should have a dirty arrow via doe by Sunday. That's about all from this end. Grilled some bear chops a few minutes ago, mmmmm.

Took my 12 year old son out satuday evening had two does two fawns and a small eight point maybe ten inches come out into the field. The buck came within 15 yards but the does stayed out at 30. Adam decided to let the buck walk hoping one of the does would come into his shooting range of 25 yards. They didn't. Now mind you he has a few deer to his credit but only 1 buck so far in his young career. I wish I had his patience at that age. Hell I wish I had it now. Oh well like he told me the seasons just started and if I shoot one now I would be done.

Buckmaster

Just had the chance to go through the game cam pics, over 400 in two weeks. At least 6 different bucks, 2 10's, a few 8's, and a couple of smaller boys. The one 10 is pretty nice, but needs some more age. Set up thecamera in the backyard tonight, we will see what is around, there are several bucks, that I saw last year that ought to be real slobs this year.

I managed to score 5 easy points for our team Friday evening. Took a doe at 8 yards in my Wintergreens plot. She stood there with a 2 7/8" or 3 1/8" spike. I couldn't guess him over or under 3" at 10 yards through 10 power binos so I opted for the doe. I double lunged her and she went 60 yards and expired. She rested in my 150 quart cooler overnight packed in ice. I checked her in Sat am and butchered her at Camp Saturday afternoon. I did make it out Sat am for a hunt. I could have taken another doe but I passed. Its tough hunting in 85 degree weather. This is the first deer I've ever taken wearing shorts. :D
I'm only good for 17 more points so your guys hunt hard and shoot straight. Best of luck.

I just rolled back in from Jefferson Co. I bagged 2 more does Friday. I didn't hunt the rest of the weekend as I played butcher and slept in. My dad bagged a doe and that 2 3/4" spike that I passed on last week on Sat. Two other fellas that came to camp bagged a turkey each Sat pm. A successful weekend. A beautiful weekend to be out in the woods.

Good job Buckmaster, sounds like a good time. I hunted Friday evening and Sat. morning until 10:00 before I had to comeback home to take two of my daughters to a softball scrimmage. Saw some does, but nothing I wanted to shoot. Had a button buck right under the tree, and actually heard a buck growl twice. He was on his way to my stand, and then started chasing another deer, and made that same sound that the Primos Buck Roar makes, pretty cool. He was within 60 yards, before he started chasing, it sounded like an early November chase? I never saw him except for the two tails, but a VERY nice buck has been entering our main foodplot right where I was setup.

My friend that is co-owner of the property with us, watched two big bucks spar in the middle of the food plot last Monday night for over an hour. He said it was awesome, not all out fighting, but just shoving each other around, and locking up antlers. They are getting warmed up for the "big dance." LOL

Just returned back from the deer woods. Slow weekend being hot and windy. Most deer remained bedded for most of the weekend. The only real movement and pattern was down near the river. The 1 1/2 year old bucks are starting to get squirrely, kinda like Oldhat. I think the Oct lull is here.

I hunted Friday night, and Saturday morning and night. It was pretty windy Friday. I saw 6 does Friday, one button buck Saturday morning, and 7 deer on Saturday evening. Only one shot opportunity, and decided it was too warm. Once it cools down, I will start to get more serious.

Arrow lodged in the opposite shoulder went about 75 yards .She was quartering away from him. Sunday morning saw a decent nine point.
I know it was a nine point because it was less than ten yards from the base of the tree. It was headed out the trail to my sons stand so I let it go hoping he would get a chance. Once it got between us the wind shifted and it winded me. That was that he won that battle. Sunday evening went to a differnt farm saw three bucks a 3,4 & 6 point nothing worth taking the bow off the hanger for .Today just does 5 of them nothing following sort of bummed after all the action yesterday.

I hunted Saturday morning through Monday night, and was covered up in deer basically every day. No shooter bucks however, until Monday evening at about 4:30. I had him at 35 yards, but he was in some thick stuff, so it may as well have been 350 yards. He is a definite P&Y buck and then some, and I got to watch him freshen up a scrape right after we had a thunderstorm go through. I will be heading back down later this week, through Sunday. I am having a little dog problem that will need to be taken care of, they were running deer 2 out of my 3 morning sits in one of my best areas. I also had two coyotes at 15 yards, but could not get them to stop for a shot.

If you guys have not tried it yet, that scent smoker thing of Brock's, is the cat's ass. The deer on our place don't let you get away with much, and I had deer underneath my stand, come in from downwind, and had 12 deer in the food plots with the wind blowing from me to them, and did not get winded at all. I had several deer bed down downwind, and layed there for over an hour. I had numerous shot opportunities at does, but have not decided to put the smack down on one yet.

Anyone else doing any good?

Vacation finished up Sunday.Although I did not connect I had a good week. alot of buck sightings (10) with shot opportunities just nothing quite big enough. Also quite a few does I just can't seem to cut loose on one of them in fear of what might be following. If I don't get my buck first then it looks like a donation to the state with the early tag. will get back with it this weekend.Good Luck.

Of course we are. I think I'm done for the year. :irked: I may take another doe with my pistol during gun season if I can find someone that needs some meat. My next conquest is helping my buddy's son next week get his first buck during youth season. I have an 8 point scouted out for him. He walked under my stand 3 of the last 3 hunts in that location. After gun season coyote season begins. Here's a couple pics from this past weekend. 4 bucks were taken. Here's the Triple 777's.

Nice job Buckmaster. I hunted very hard the last few days. I saw a total of 2 (two!) mature does, and about a bunch of yearlings, mainly button bucks. I also saw 11 different racked bucks, plus a spike. Only one of the bucks was a shooter, the other was a borderline 3.5 year old 8 point, and he was hounding a doe in our field. The majority of the bucks are 1.5-2.5 year olds, and I had legitimate shots at about half of them. I am not shooting does yet on our place in Jefferson county, but I may decide to whack one behind the house this week. Our clover is still doing pretty well, and the deer are just starting to work on the brassicas now. We have 1 1/2 acres of turnips, plus another acre or so of forage oats, so it should make for some great late season hunting. The young bucks are basically cruising, and I think the mature bucks are hooked up with the older does. I am seeing quite a few deer, but not what I am looking for yet.

Remember this upcoming weekend is youth gun season, we need to wear orange in the woods. I will be sitting with my 11 year old daughter, trying to get her first deer.

I'm pretty much done for this year. I may take the pistol out for gun season a day or two. I found someone that wants some deer meat. My buddy and I are taking his 16 year old son on a youth hunt in Jefferson Co. tomorrow. I'm going along to play host, spectate, and site my .204 in. I'm getting picked up within the hour.

Congrates Big H on scoring your daughter that 8 point. My friend and I took his 16 year old son down to Jefferson Co this past weekend on a youth hunt. Our youth was buck hunting because he's taken does before but never a buck. We saw 18 deer on 3 hunts. 6 were bucks and 2 of them were within shooting range. He passed on a neck shot at 35 yards and got busted at 25 yards by another buck transitioning the gun from the tree into his hand. He had 5 does within easy range but passed. A nice weekend of relaxation and the ability to "pass it on".

Thanks Buckmaster, I will add some points to our team score soon, I have been holding off on the does, but I will put one down in the near future. I still have not even drawn the bow on a buck yet, but that can change very quickly as we all know. It is not that I am not seeing them, just haven't seen one I want yet.

Trap, just submit a pic of the tag, and your phone picture.

I passed on 3 more bucks this evening, one a 2.5 year old with real good potential, the other two were first racked bucks. I passed on two last night also, one young buck, and the other a nice 3.5, but one of his beams was broken off right past his brow tine. I was planning on shooting a doe, but haven't had one that was in range here lately. I have passed on 16 different bucks now inside of 20 yards, just waiting for a big boy to make a mistake.

I drove to Jefferson county this morning, and hunted from 1:00-dark. I saw 18 deer, of which 15 were positively different animals. Only 2 bucks, both small, and 5 mature does, the rest were yearlings. I almost shot a doe, I had 3 mature does under my tree, but deer just kept filing into the field, and I kept thinking the next one is going to be a big boy. I had numerous shot opportunities, but kept holding off. Still lot of time left.

I passed on a doe/button buck tonight, at 15 yards, I couldn't be sure it wasn't a bb, so I let it walk. Are any of you other guys still hunting?

Not me Big H.

It appears that only the desperate guys still have tags to fill (75%of your team).

Buckmaster:

Gonna be some nice weather this weekend...good chance for you to come down and wash my 4runner. I did do you a favor though, I hosed it off as it was looking pretty bad with 3 months worth of mud on it.....those car wash places get me...especially when they hang a sign that says "No Mud!"

I think you got it wrong bro, you desperate guys already filled your tags. I would rather eat mine than use it on a buck that I passed earlier in the season, and decided to use it on the same buck in the late season so I could say "I got my buck." Even my illustrious teammate "BuckMaster" disappointed me with his decision after being the big talker in the early season, "Gonna beat my 12 pointer from last year" I have passed 18 different bucks, and "refuse to use" my tag for the sake of a contest, or to pump out my chest. I have higher standards than some I guess.

I let my friend tag the 14 pointer this year. My Camp is going on a 5 point on one side antler restriction next year. That will force the "steaks" to be raised. My finger was itchy on a slow day...

Nice pics big H.

You need to switch to feathers though.

Seems like you are into food plots a lot. Personally I've never planted and have no clue? Any suggestions? Would like a "late season" set-up like it appears you are hunting. I've got a 20 acre field that could damn near pass off as being in your pic, nice field, surrounded by timber, then I have 2 other "smaller" fields that are within 200 yards and 300 yards of the bigger field...each of these fields are smaller with on ebeing about 1 acre and another being around 3 acres. As you know, I'm lazy, but do have access to a tractor and plow/everything I need. The farmer has told me to do whatever I want as he does not plant anything or have cattle on the farm, he simply bushhogs the fields every once in awhile. He does have a 50 gallon barrel full of turnip seeds, said I could plant them if I wanted. Main goal in my plot(s) would be to help the deer, then try and pull some other deer from surrounding properties (which I can also hunt) to this area later in the year.

Do you think plots have helped pull deer from other areas?, do deer "stack" on these plots? Have you seen a shift in the number of does in relation to the plots (for rut hunting), etc. Let me know what you think. Also, how much cash do you dump a year and time into the plots. My theory here is that if it is pricey, hell I could just buy $1500 worth of stuff and dump it out for the deer.
