I am just curious, who decided on our team name being what it is? I don't want to start trouble, nor do I mind much, but I would of liked to have ahd some input into our TEAM name.

Francisco, hey man, the night before the name was submitted, lung buster Pm me about the topic. I told him the name that you chose, the name I chose, and the name cornstalk chose. I also commented on how I didn't recall hime(lung buster) hadn't suggested any names. So, I told him since he hadn't that he should choose the name he like s the best out of the three we came up with. He came back and told me that he put all three names in a hat and pulled one out. I thought that seemed fair on his part. And well the rest is history, Scrape sniffers became the name. I believe the last name you wrote about was Treestand Assasins, I thought you like it the most out of all the ones you mentioned. That was the name I gave him to consider. If you have anymore questions you can Pm me.

It's all good man. I was more curious then anything else. Where abouts do you live exactly? I haven't seen any deer like that around here.

There descent bucks. We have a few others that are a little better than those. It be hard to pass them up, but after last years buck I arrowed I want to be a little more selective this year. I'm not sure if either of those deer are Pope and Young, but that is what I'm looking for. Pope and Young and I'll be happy. Along with a few does.

By the way I guess I should introduce myself to my teammates. Or should I say my fellow champions!! I live in Jackson, Ohio, which is in Southeastern Ohio. I have gun hunted deer for many years, but I have only been seriously bowhunting for 2 years. I might be on the inexperienced side to some, but I have learned many things in the past couple of years through family and friends. I feel I have researched and studied a great deal of info about bowhunting and I have learned many tips along the way. Every day I am in the woods I learn new things and when I'm deer hunting I have learned from my mistakes and my successes.
I have spent most of this offseason in the woods scouting and picking up new places to hunt. I'm prepared and hope to have a successful and FUN season. Good Luck to all my teammates as well as everyone else in the deer woods.

Fransisco, just a suggestion. You said you bought the lightest arrows possible? Be careful, if your shooting 70 #, make sure your spine weight is enough. If not your arrows will explode and it could hurt you!! Do you have any kind of archery shop close to you?

Buckmaster

I think Portage Archery is over his way. They may have changed the name because its been awhile since I've heard their name pop up.

That's good to here. I think he needs to go there. I think you need a little direction in that department Fransisco. Who served in your rest, D-loop, peep, and did they paper tune it. If all these factors aren't considered your accuracy will be highly compromised or even your safety. PM me if you have any questions, and I will try and help you if I can.

These arrows are listed for 50# - 70# bows. I don't think it'll be a problem.

I think Portage Archery was near Akron, in the Mogadore area. I know for sure Ten Point owns an archery shop next to Ten Point Crossbow's over in Suffield, Oh.

Great, did someone measure and cut them to your length?

FranciscoJ
09-14-2007, 06:45 AM
Here's the thing that is odd but works in my favor. The bow is 31" and so are the arrows. I am only 5'8" tall. However, I have a slightly larger then normal (only by a inch or two) span. So, considering I do not have tons of money to cut, fletch, etc, I bought some really nice arrows from Walmart. I have been practicing with them a lot without a problem. I am dialed in at 20yrds. I practice on a target no bigger then a shoe box lid from 20yrds and am hitting it no problem really. Doesn't guarantee a kill, but it is surely in the right direction I think. It may not be all this high dollar equipment, but I am 100% in it's function and reliability.

I heard he is doing fine. The kid was fetching arrows for his dad that was practicing out in the yard. He was running back to his dad and fell and jabbed the arrow in his throat. He was lucky though. No broadhead, the field tip bruised his Carotid. He is lucky to be around.

Nothing but young bucks, and does/fawns on the game camera. I moved it to another spot, and will check it in about two weeks. Our food plots are looking good, and our deer population at our property is good, so now it is just a matter of finding the right buck, and a little luck. I don't get real serious until mid/late October.

I gotta do some serious scouting this coming up weekend. And considering folks are coming to visit, I won't have much time prior to season opener. I am also going to try and find some other spots. We will see.

Ok, so I have my LARGE wooded area to hunt. I need some advice. There is a ATV track that goes REALLY DEEP into the woods. Would it be a bad idea to place some feed on the tracks and setup in a tree so I can have a clear shot on a deer that feeds on the track? Also, would it be a good idea ot prep the are this coming up weekend?

Not good idea #1 why advertise where he is hunting? If you are going to put out corn, don't put it out in the middle of the 4 wheeler trail, put it back in the woods somewhere after you find an area to use your stand.

Personally I wouldnt put corn on the atv trail, but you wont have to cut shooting lanes, if there are people using the four wheeler trail that regular that they will try to hunt in your spot then you probably wont see any deer there anyways. heres my experience, if your looking to shoot a doe then you will prob see one on the atv trail. if your looking for a mature buck chances are not good that one will just come down the trail unless it is a very very remote trail that sees little to no action. I would say most of the deer will be coming into the trail at night to eat your bait. Thats my .02

wallydog1
09-17-2007, 03:18 PM
look for a trail cutting across the ATV trail.walk the trial both ways to see if there are a few trails converging.if there riding ATVs on the trail the deer might hold back farther.try to set up on a y if possible.Try to place your stand No more the 20 yards from the trails that meet. Then start a bait pile.that way the ATV's don't keep running over the pile.with out seeing the lay out it's hard to picture.I now where I hunt they tend to walk on there on trails more.

Hey guys, I am pumped for Saturday. I don't get off work Friday night until, well... 2:30 in the morning on Saturday. That sucks because I won't be able to sleep. It's like the same feeling I got on Christmas Eve when I was 5 years old. I had another guy on an argo come onto my property last week. Thankfully didn't steal anything, but messed up some cover and probably scared all the deer out of the area. Oh well, I'm gonna try it anyway. Hopefully I'll be posting some pics of a doe. Good luck you guys!

Hey guys, I'm back. sorry to say but my 2 buddies and I didn't connect on any elk last week. But we did hear at least a few bugles every day, and got to set up on them at least once a day but would usually hang up about 100 yds out. had a small herd of cattle run off a very good bull that was coming in. Sunday night I had a good 6x6 at 50 yds. but didn't pull the string because of thick oak brush. going to hang my stand sometime this weekend maybe. Kinda hard to get fired up about deer after last week.....:nono:

I have plans with my girl around 11am so I couldn't do a lot of hunting. I did come close though. I was stalking one Doe at one point. I came around a dirt hill and BAM...there was another one. basically we had a stare down contest. I came within 30-35 or so. I didn't risk the shot. She huffed and I grunted. It was really cool. Good thing is I talked to the mechanic of the shipping company right by my grounds and he says he sees deer ALL THE TIME. That and in this cleared area, it is covered with tracks in the dirt. This is going to be a great season guys...I can just feel it.

Well guys, I went out all day Saturday and had a chance to take a fawn. She gave me plenty of chances, 2 of them actually. They gave me 30 minutes at 8 yards away to take a shot. They never knew I was there. One fawn even walked down the same path that I came in on and I was never detected. Trust me I was itching to pull the trigger, but I just couldn't do it. I was hoping mom would show her face but never did. Would any of you took the shot? When I go in there again I might have to take the shot and get us on the board.

Don't worry 45, to be honest I wasn't even thinking about this contest when I was in the stand. It was just the first chance at a deer this year and I was itchin!! Being a fawn though I just knew I wouldn't be happy taking it, that's the main reason I didn't shoot. I'm waiting on the first mature doe.

I setup my ground-blind today. It's nothing spectacular, but it is rather nice. I used a lot of ground cover, logs, and natural structure. While not "invisible", it is still nicely covered. Also, in time (obviously well within hunting season) the deer will become very used to it. I setup in the area I came across a huge doe (and her fawn). I also set out a little corn feed. Nothing major, maybe like 1.5cups max. Just enough to spark local interest for now. I dropped some bushes and smaller trees, to get myshooting lanes good and straght. I plan to go out tomorrow again and stay for like 5hrs...if it doesn't get too hot. How is everyone doing?

Well boys, We are on the board!!! I took a doe this morning. She wasn't very big, but I took her anyway. This was the same doe that keeps coming in everytime I'm out. I told her to leave but she wouldn't listen!! So today was the day. I sat there for 2 hours and @ around 8:45 here she comes walking in. She was about 40 yards and she jumped up on her hind legs and ate off a tall plant. Then came walking straight in and turned broadside at 17 yards for about 3 minutes and I decided it was time. I drew back and anchored. The sun was to my right in the east and as soon as I looked through the peep I had nothing but a major glare. I was patient and I waited for the perfect shot. I took it and right away I knew it was a good shot. I waited about 45 minutes and I went to look at my arrow which had been power drived into a small tree all the way back to the back of the blades. What can I say those Muzzy four blades done the trick and 60 yards later there laid my doe. What a day. I'll post pics tomorrow hopefully.

Ok, so tomorrow it seems it's gonna be a great day for hunting. This is the weather report (http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/44221?begHour=20&begDay=282#Wed,%20Oct%2010)for my area. It's been VERY HOT recently; it's been as high as 90f here. This is where experience comes into play.

And with that in mind, I ask for help. For a while now the deer have been suffocated with high heat. And today, we are getting rained on. But tomorrow (as can be seen), seems like it's going to be a nice cold day. The high is only 59 or so. Is there any way I should approach hunting? Is there any special technique or time or WHATEVER? I figurenow tha the heats broken hunting will get better.

Also, I hate to ask, but decoys. What is your opinion on using them. I have seen everything from WAY expensive 3d models to the cheaper 2d Renzos, and the like. Any insight into use and technique?

as someome on here said earlier, If you can, just watch from a distance and see if they are generally using a certain area to feed. they will usually come and go the same way. try to move into the wind. where I hunt there are lots of small woodlots...I usually had my climber on the downwind edge no matter how much sign I see and work my way in once I saw the general areas they used most. but when they start chasing does and you are ground hunting, all bets are off...they could be moving around anywhere.........notice that I said usually and generally alot.

Good to see your on some deer!! I hung a stand about 2 months ago and I have yet to hunt it. I put out some corn and put a camera on it and all I got was does and a spike. i found some rubs from last year that seemed to be by a big deer. One tree was about 20-30 inches in diameter. I have yet to go in there and look for new rubs. I want all those deer to feel safe. This is the most patient I have ever been. I just hope that same buck is back in there this year. I have some white oaks all around me, which makes me a want to go in there now, because it's a good crop this year. The one bad thing about this stand is that I only have one way into it. Which is down the same draw that the deer might come. I might get lucky and they might come up the draw, I don't know for sure which way they are traveling to be honest. I'll hope for the best.

Going out in the morning, gonna try and smoke a doe again. Atleast a little bit bigger one this time!!!

Hey guys, has anyone been doing any hunting. Anybody seen any bucks or good skinheads to take. I jumped a 140 class buck yesterday walking to my stand. Saw a doe right at dark. I was just starting to lower mmy bow down when she walked by. I picked it back up just in case a buck was close behind, but it didn't happen. Maybe next time. Good Luck everyone.

not too awful bad, haven't even been in my stand yet.just got off 2nd shift and was planning on starting tonite or tomm. nite but rain is moving in and my daughter has a volleyball game wed. nite. so, hopefully we get the cooler weather. all I've been seeing in the field by my stand are does and yearlings. so I figure the next two weeks ought to be good with me not stinking up the area.....

Lucky

Hey guys, just checking in. I have been hunting hard the past few days. It is heating up out there. I hate to leave the stand at all at this point. I have seen 13 different bucks. The biggest being an upper 140 class 12 point with double split brows. He is the one I am after, but he is givin me a run for my money. I have been using a buck decoy and it is working like a charm. Every buck except for one has come in to look at it and check it out. I even had a small 8 point chasing a doe fawn come into it and check it out. The buck made a scrape right by it and the doe fed near it for about 15 minutes. The funny part was that the buck headed off in one direction and the doe stayed with my decoy. It was almost like she found her a new man that wouldn't chase her everywhere!!! Another big bodied forkhorn came in and he was ruttin hard. His back was dripping with sweat and he came walking into my decoy stiff legged and hair bristled with his head half down like he was looking for a fight.
The other night about 5 minutes after a down pour I noticed some does running in the field about 250 yards ahead of me. I knew there had to be a buck there. I grunted and sure enough he appeared. He was atleast a 130 class super tall 10 point. He was a shooter for sure. He came in on a string to my decoy and stood back a few yards and checked him out. I waited patiently for about 3 minutes and then he turned broadside at 40 yards. I let it fly and I couldn't believe it he ducked the shot and it went right over his back. He ran off and then circled back around to the other side of me still intrigued by the decoy. I drew on him and had to hold it for a few minutes and at the last second for a shot I had to let it down and he booked it out of there. I was so digusted with myself, who am I kidding, I am still disgusted, but atleast it was a clean miss. Not to make excuses but with the rain my vanes got wet, because I could hear that arrow sailing through the air at him. I'm sure he heard it, OH Well. These past few days have just been a blast. Crazy thing is I have seen more bucks than does. I just need a few bigger boys to come buy. I can't even pay a mature doe to walk past me, just bucks and fawns. So, if I get a mature doe that will be a trophy as well.

My best advice is spend every available minute in the woods!! God Luck to all of you!

I have packed up my bow and dont plan on getting it back out unless I have to in Jan. Unless one of you are setting on a 32 pointer, I dont think that we will make it to the top, lol.
I did manage to get another doe on 11-16 and thought I'd share a couple of pics...... My 2 yr old went back with me to get her and we had a great time!!
