I have some more doors to knock on for some additional hunting spots.
I have a question if any of you know the answer. I'm going back East to visit my son-in law when he gets back from Iraq, will be deer hunting I hope. Does the contest only allow Ohio Deer? I would think it unfair I guess. Oh well half the fun is trying to find a good spot then worry about killing the deer.

Hey everyone, hows it goin? I posted some info on an earlier post but i'll just start over.

i'm travis(camptrav) i'm 16 and i have killed 3 deer in my life. my first deer was a 6 point w/o brows, igot it w/ a muzzleloader during youth gun season in 2005. my second deer was a button buck, it was my first bow kill(crossbow), i got it in october 2006. my third deer was a small 6 point that i shot in january 2007 also w/ a crossbow, it was my first deer i ever watched go down. funny thing is i killed them all on the same property less than 500 yrds away from each other. its a great piece of private property in delaware county. some other places i hunt are alum creek and delaware state park.

My uncle took me with him hunting once when i was 8 and i've been hooked since.

I might me young and somewhat inexpierienced but i won't let the team down.;)

Hey everyone Ive been doin some scoutin on some new areas of public land lately. In one area im going to be hunting, there is a big creek that runs through it. on one side there is a big meadow that gradually gets thicker and im thinking its the bedding area. on the other side of the creek its a steep ridge with tons of oaks at the top. and all along the creek bed there are tons of deer tracks in the mud from where they crossed, including some huge tracks heading straight for the oaks. i havent found any rubs or scrapes yet but it is still early and i havent scouted the whole place out yet. i know where i'll be hunting this season. oh and i finally got my lisence and deer permit.

good luck scouting everyone, the season is apon us.

I feel your pain on that one. I found two deer last year in my creek bottom both hit by cars. both bucks. They were twins only a 1 1/2 old. Seemed strange that both would die the same way only 100 feet apart.

So that same field that had the 5 does in it this morning at lunch time had three Coyotes. First time I have ever seen them out in the daytime. They were on one side of the reveane doing a belly crawl with their head peaking up about evrey 15ft. I got out of my truck and started flapping my arms and yelling without them doing much at all. The cars driving bye must of thought I was having a epaleptic sesure or something. After what felt like hours
(1 minute) they high tailed it into the woods. If they come bye in the morining we should get bonus points for taking out a predators!

Got in the field early and quiet this morning, as I could start to make objects out I noticed a doe beded down right on the middle of the field. I was sure she would have to walk right buy me when she gets up. After a full half hour of no movement and the sun coming up, she wasn't beded down, she was just down. I walked out to find her with two busted legs and dead as door nail. The whole time I was patting myself on the back for being so stealthy. She hadn't been dead long as she was still warm. I loaded her up on the four wheeler and that end this mornings hunt. Should I claim her for a 1/2 a point in case of a tie breaker. She was big and still nursing. We will try again on Sunday. Good Luck fellas!

Hey no biggie, I would say it is alittle early to end all of this fun. up here in zone A I'm used to trying to make a decision. When to shoot because most years we only have one tag. You dont want to shoot the first deer you see, and you dont want to wait to longer either. I'm stoked because the extra tag we get this year I can get some meat in the frezzer and wait on that bigboy to come along:bouncy:

Taking opinons, this new property I'm hunting, I'll call it Paridise has got me confused. It is really the first time ever to have so much land and not sure what to do with it. It currently has 4 seperate 30 acre fields that our seperated by hardwoods about 20 yards thick. I know where the deer end up like tonight I counted over 10 does in the farthest field to the west. Just hav'nt figured out where to set-up. The good news/bad. this property was not supposed to EVER been hunt, what I find tonight but a tree stand all over grown. It had been up so long that the chain was embeded in the tree. The shrubs around the tree were so grown up you coundn't get close to it.

First question: Is it to late to use a chain saw to prepare for shooting lanes. (Oh I claimed the tree stand!) Would this disrupt the normal patterns going on?
Second question: If question one is it's not to late, how long before going back after fixing it up, after all the season is young.
I'm sure I'll have more but lets start with this. I feel like it's Christmas Eve and I'm 10 years old again.

#1 If there is a big buck that you know lives in that area. i would steer clear of doing anything that would spook him. But, if your just after some does. Then I wouldnt have a problem doing it. just do it in the middle of the day and no more than you have too.
I'm not sure about your deer down there but up here in the northern part of the state. The deer are rather used to human activity.I have a woods where the farmer cuts wood all threw the fall. The only effect i see is when he leaves the brush, or the wood stacked in piles. This seems to spook the deer for a few days. they just steer clear of it for a while.

#2 I would give it a couple days rest after it is done

I just finished all my work in preperation for hunting this weekend. I have three stands, well two tree and one ground blind all setup. I decided to just use my gurber hand saw and a rachet clipper that worked out great. Have all my lanes ready to shoot. While in the hardwoods I ran into a area that the trees were rubbed to death, probally 5-6 diferent trees in a 25 yard circle. All kinds of scrapes, huge acorn trees in the middle it's deer heaven. I was trying to determan the size of this buck by the rubs, these trees were ate up and fresh. I hung a trail cam and put corn out and will give it a break until Saturday night and Sunday. Keep your fingers crossed.

Sorry Jeff, it sounds like an awesome area, look for trails leading out and into that core area and set up outside that area, downwind preferably and the most worn trail is not always the best to setup on. Them bruisers sometimes use the least traveled routes especially if it offers him cover. Just look around and ask yourself which way you would go if you did not want to be seen......just food for thought....I hope you nail a biggin

It was behind some brush so i didnt have a clear shot. Then it came back up and past me again, she was haulin so there was no way i could get a shot. Anyways it was a heart pumping day of hunting even though i didnt get a shot off, and it was really the first time i seen some action this season.

Tomarrow i'm goin the eastern knox with my uncle, so that shold be a blast, and hopefully i'll get a good shot off.

Well went in last week and placed a stand and camera up about 400yrds down from my other stand of which i had not seen a single deer. I hunted the new stand this morning and saw nothing but had a few nice pics on the camera it seems these deer are moving in the afternoon so i will be in there this afternoon to see what materalizes. this little guy in the picture will be a dandy in a couple of years he is already showing good mass.

awsome buck Jeff, i hope you get a shot at him, H ere is what i have been doing and maybe something will help. I have been hunting 4 times now from the south stand of the funnel and have not seen a deer. So i bought a second stand and thought i would go back 400yrds to the back crossing on the river. and have hunted it sat morn, evening and sunday evening and have seen 15 does and got a small buck on the cam. So now i have both ends of the funnel covered and have been doing more observation than hunting. I still am not sure of what the river bottoms hold it's new for me i am used to hunting ridge tops and saddles and feel this place will have more traffic come rut and this is all i can hope. I broke up my time schedule as to when i was hunting (morning, midday & evening) most of my action has been late afternoon and evening. I am confident in my stand location, good shooting lanes and i have also seen that the north location is a major hub for the east side of the river.

Hey Team, whats going on everybodys been quiet. Jeff whats the latest on your big buck any more sightings. I think i will hunt a different stand this weekend, originally i was gonna let it cool down a week however alot of good advice from these boards have got me thinking different. This stand has not been hunted since opening day and the deer i have been seeing have been coming from that area. So i am gonna mix it up and keep the deer on their toe's

Hi guy's, just got in from a drive bye of the property. Drove West and nothing in the field, turned around and at 7:08 I counted what I believed to be 7 bucks of assorted sizes. The big 10pt was hanging pretty close to the tree line. Then a massive 12-14pt walks out, was getting to dark to tell. I wanted to pick my trail cam up, but wasn't going to risk being seen/heard busted. So the good news, their around, moving and weather permitting will give them hell this weekend.

Ran out while the rain was stopped to pick up the Trail Cam, couldn't wait to see the new pic's. I have got to have the pic's of the Largest....... Frigin Racoons in Ohio, and NO Pictures of Deer:confused: I was so pumped and maybe now second guessing some of the things I did trying to get the area ready to hunt. But as I mentioned they have been out in the field they just moved the highway I guess. I'll be sitting in the treestand on the Cornfield edge vs. the hardwood area I set the camera on.

Just got in from a drive bye. The field had 7-8 does in it, at least 4 were just lying down while the others grazed in the pouring rain. My thoughts now our not to take any does until the rutt is over, why take away your best buck attractor from the area. More hot does more buck activity..I hope

couldn't agree more Jeff, i am going to wait also. had a good weekend seen lots of deer seen 4 tonight all bucks seen a deer down on the river bank it was hard to tell with all the undergrowth. so i got the binos out and could see what looked like horns. he messed around for probably 20 mins i got the can out to see if he would respond no luck. so i tried the grunt call called twice and seen more movement grunted again and here he come grunting back at me it was the buck in the pic several post up nice little 8 point. and then about 10 mins after the rain started it was like a light switch was thrown i seen 3 bucks fighting and chasing each other across the river about 150 yards away and they were being very vocal. it wont be long

Hi team, had a great night in the tree stand today. I had 4 does hang around for a 20 minutes and then a 6pt came right under my stand. It was starting to get dark so I thought I try some grunts just to see what happened. It drove this guy nuts. He kept stomping then he run back in to the brush, circle around me trying to find this other buck. The good news, never got winded, was in bow range I learned alot. The bad news he was just a 6pt. I hope the big boy's come to play like he did.

I really thought i would have seen more, have not seen a doe in 2 weeks i dont know what happened to them. I did catch a trespasser on the trail cam a couple of weeks back i think he is from across the river. I still have yet ot see a shooter buck

I did not have to 2nd guess if he was a shooter. She almost took him back the way they came in and decided to go in a thicket on my right and then turned to come 10yrds in front of me. He was trying to anticapate her moves and stopped 22 yrds in front of me BIG MISTAKE the rage 2 blade did a number he only went 30 yrds and it was over. The pics are taken with my trail cam but it was all i had. It took 3 of us to drag 1 1/2 hours to drag out he was a heavy brute

Got in the stand around 4pm and had does in the corn field about 4:30. Two does and a fawn starting walking towards me when I noticed another deer close to the tree line walking perpindicular to the does. As they got closer turns out their not deer in the wood line but two coyotes stalking the fawn, they would belly crawl when ever the deer heads were down. Finaly momma deer noticed them and got between them and the fawn, but never very worried about it. The yotes headed into the woods and the deer kept walking closer to me. At about 45 yards I started hearing a noise behind me and working towards my right, damn if it wasn't the yotes circled around to get down wind of them at let them walk right at them. I could see the one with its head between its paws just waiting for the right time. As it began its movement to lift itself off the ground I let loose the spitfire on him, I heard a yelp and carniage of leaves and trees crashing around. I hit it right behind the neck and front leg. This is the first time I have ever even seen a coyote in the daytime and have never shot at one before. I brought it up to the lady's house to show her I was getting rid of what she wanted. She brought a scale out and weight it, 52lbs. Means nothing to me I just found out I gained 5lbs over the last week. It felt like a was watching a dicovery channel show watching it all unfold. So my first coyote, now what do I do with it?

When I got there the landowner was cutting down the rest of his corn so I sat in the woods on a trail. i left my spot a little early because the landowner had stop cutting and when i got to the edge of the field i saw a doe feeding on the cut side of the corn so i sat and watched it hoping it would come my way but it walked into the standing corn and by then it was time to quit anyways. As i was walking back to the truck i jumped a deer into the woods, couldnt tell what it was, too dark. Anyways that was my night, glad i atleast saw some, this past week i have been skunked every day. i think with that corn down there startin to pop out more.

sounds like you are hunting the field edges, are there any funnels or pinch points you could get a treestand in, i hunt a pinch point fairly aggresive, at some point them deer are gonna funnel right to you. I didnt use any decoys, mock scrapes or scents. I did not want anything to look out of place to them. The idea is to get in stealthy, leave no scent if at all possible and try to be in the right place at the right time......good luck bud

Hey guys hows it goin, well i went to knox county today and hunted all day w/ my uncle on a small 50 acre piece of land. In the morning I saw a small 8 point out of range, then after lunch i found out that if a buck is chasing a doe, grunting won't do a thing if your trying to get its attention, but it will lure in smaller deer. At 5:05 PM I shot this button buck at about 15 yards w/ my horton crossbow and got both lungs. This was the first deer i have ever gutted by myself and is the 4th deer i've killed in my life. really i would rather shoot a doe than a button buck, but atleast i get the chance to kill an antlered buck now. good luck to everyone, and add some more points to the Ruttin Fools.

I ran right into 5 deer making their way to me. Got nothing but white tails in my face for the effort. I can't ever remember having to quit deer hunting over lightning. Got in my truck and headed out and I found my second dead buck from the property this one was hit by a car. He was a young 8pt that would have made a great mature buck in the future. I'm giving it a rest for 3/4 days and try it again weather permitting. The frustration is setting in and I need a additude adjustment quickly. I've had the same doe and fawn come bye me at least 7 times, there will be no number eight!

I'm not a good scorer either, but to take a poke at it i would say gross 155-160, great deer, not to rub salt in the womb

No worries, I'm numb. The only salt I'll need is to go with the pepper for the seasoning I'll need for all this meat I'll have. Back in September I saw seven bucks in the field, The 14 the 12 and two 8's our now history. The two year old that was hit by the car was obviuosly the son of this last buck. They had the same antlers just smaller in diameter. He would have made a monster mature buck. Lets hope I have a few more that have been hiding out and don't like kissing the next bumper that drives bye.

what's happenin Fools, did everyone slip into a turkey coma after thanksgiving....lol.....I went out last weekend and pulled my stands, and while i was there i decided to look around a bit and there were rubs and scrapes all over the place. once i do my initial scouting in early season i dont walk around in there to much. But once season is over i snoop to see what the deer have been doing. Am i done for the year?....no....i have some river bottoms, i want to stalk me a doe later, after gun season. I have taken some good deer, and it is a great challenge. How's everyone's hunting going?

What a bad year, just found the fourth buck killed this one by another truck. It did about 2k in damage. How many mature deers can I loose from one spot.

On the good side, the whole family will be eating good this winter!

Just in case my teamates were worried I didn't no the ass from the head.http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e169/gunners1/jeffsdoe.jpg
Who said pushing deer is bad? Got off work early so decided to go give it a try. As I was driving in I could see pickup trucks parked all around the surronding properties. The wind was blowing pretty good so I thought I might get a chance to walk and stalk on something. I was out about 10 minutes heard a large boom from near bye thinking someone just got one. It was followed by 2 more quick shots. In about two minutes I hear trees and leaves moving and it look like the start of the Kentucky Derby, deer flying evreywhere, I started to count them all before the brain took over and said shoot idiot! This doe wasn't the biggest just the dumbest, she stood still when she saw me at about 15 yards. After I hit here another one stop about 20 yards away and just staired at me fro about 1/2 minutes. Could have easly been a double. But it was fun and glad to get me on the board.

Hi guy's thanks for the messages. I made it out on Saturday and thought I give the CVA its first opportunity, it didn't let me down. I took a 95 yard shot that hit her right behind the left leg, she ran about 30 yards before piling up in a creek bottom. This new technology that the hunting world has given us sure has given us better chances at harvesting these great animals. Once I learned the inner secrets of keeping the bore clean in between shots I feel a 100-150 yard shot is not only dueable, but would have great success of making a great shot. I swithched to the Triple 7 powder and it is sulfer free and gives off much less smoke as well. Hope your all doing well and keep me informed on what your plans our coming up.

Just got in from taking corn out to the property. I thought with this snow storm coming in it might be a good thing to try and keep them around. I got out about 3:30 and by 4:30 had finished what I needed to do. As I'm walking out I decide to go sit in a ladder stand that I have never been in before. Old trespassers that I claimed. As I'm stepping up it I see deer out in the cornfield already eating from the piles I put out. About seven does in total. Get my binoculars out to get a better look and what do I see but about 5 feet tall of bone, big big antlers:shhh: I havn't seen this guy in over a month. I couldn't help myself so I got the grunt tube out and gave it a couple blows. The does took off like a bat out of hell and he just stood tall staring to see something. I tried a couple more but he took off after the does. They ended up staying just on the other side of the tree line so I thought it a good idea to sneak out and give it heck in the morning. Weather cooperating maybe we will have some luck. Last time there was a gun weekend neighbors drove them right over to my location for sanctuary. Maybe me and my little Horton can connect. Wish me luck!

Hi gang, Saturday morning looked promising, got in the stand at about 6:30 had some does come out around 7:30. Waited for that buck to make his apperiance but the snows showed up at 9am and I could hardly see the ground it was comming down so hard. I got down around 10 and decided to walk it and catch them bunkered down but no luck. I took off around 11:30. Then on Sunday I made it out around 7:15 knowing I was just going to walk the property, my tree stand was a rocking in the wind. The snow was coming down sideways. I carreid in a small fold up stool and found a cedar tree area to sit it our hoping I catch something moving but no luck. I cant wait to see the numbers for Ohio for the weekend. I'm guessing that the numbers will be way down this year compared to last year. Should make that last muzzle loader after Christmas a popular couple of days.

Hey Team, not much talking going on about the contest. I went out over the weekend and had lots of movement showing up. I thought I was going to put the big score up on the the 10 point I've seen on camera all year. He walked out to the cornfield at about 5pm. He started about50 yards away. He was on a direct line to my stand. He got within 20 yards and I was ready to go. He was eating lifted his head and turned to his other side, should be perfect except my big 10 is now only a huge 5. He shed is right side already. Talked about confused, shoot him and find his shed? I decided he won the battle this year and to let him go until the next season. I'll hope he is bigger and better and get the same opportunity but earlier in the season. So unless someone has a 17 pt hanging around it looks like will have to settle for middle of the pack. The bright side I was able to put two big does in the freezer. Hope to hear from you all soon.

Drove bye the property to night at 5:45 always like seeing what I missed by not making it out. I can see one of my tree stands with binoculars and low and behold someone is sitting in my stand, I'm fumming mad. I have to drive up about a 100 yards to get in the drive way before I'll have to walk back to the stand. I have a flashlight but mind you I'm in my best Tom McCans and a suit right from work. I turn the flash light on when I'm about 60 yards away and yell that I'm comming and want to talk to him. I hear a bunch of tree branches cracking a couple thuds and off and running he goes, I give the 10 second I'm going to chase you down speech until he is out of site through the woods. I check my stand out and surrounding area and when I'm about ready to turn around to get back to my truck I see what looks like an arrow, and it was 4 of them attached to a quiver attatched to a compound bow!:yikes: In the confusion and quick get away he must of thrown the bow down and couldn't find it in the dark, its a Martin Phantom Pro Hunter. The string had come off the cams but I grab it up and go back to the truck. I made some calls and I head home. I decide to drop the bow off to a local bow shop to see if he could fix it. In about 15 minutes I get a call on the cell phone that he has fixed it and I've got my first Compound Bow. When I show up pretty excited he say's I have good news and bad maybe, Good News its a great bow, bad news its for a lefty! So if you know any left handed poachers looking for a new bow send me a PM. Until then I'll be practicing with my new backwards bow. Should be fun!
