Alright fellow Rack Reaper members, how you all feeling about the upcoming season at this point?
I've got high hopes!!

I'm confident. The only thing I worry about a little bit is time to hunt. I'm not sure how many week days I will be able to get in the woods, but I'll find enough time to stick some does and hopefully one of the bucks I have been eying all summer.

I'm anxious to get the season started. I work shift work and only work 14 days per month. I spend many hours in the woods each year. I have my eyes on 2 "shooter " bucks and plan on shooting a doe early in the season. I hunt a 150 acre area that has 4 bowhunters with permission to hunt it. One of the guys with permission is DAN on team 12. So i'll have some competition this year but i wish him all the luck. Looks like we are going to have a active team which is what i was really wanting most. I cant wait to here your stories and see your pictures.

looks like we'll have an active team. Should make things lots of fun.
I'm gonna put in as much hunting time as possible. I've done as much scouting as possible... Three trips, cameras, been studying aerial photos and topos, and stands are hung. I'm not going near where I'm hunting again till opening day.

I like that but I would like it better if I could see the deer. I wonder if we use it in our signature and then put rack reapers below or something.

I gotta hand it to ya', I wouldn't last one minute in the city. A lot of what I do has me in and around the city, but that's about as much as I can take.
As a matter of fact, I only lasted two years in a development when I had to move out to the "sticks". I'm not as far back in as a lot of folks, but I feel like it.
So what weapon and set-up are you guys armed with for this season?

- TruGlo Range Rover single pin sight
- Shock Terminator Suppressor
- Scott Mongoose release

Are those the only broadheads you are going to use? Why not get some more? In fact get a 6 arrow quiver, with a different broadhead setup on each arrow.:coco: :coco: This isn't golf, you don't use a different broadhead for different situations.

Im not going to use all those broadheads, I just shot the ones I had to see what shoots best. I will be going with what I shoot the best when season comes. I will continue shooting different broadheads until I am confident with one more than the rest.

All that money on a pretty bow, and you are going to shoot $10 broadheads? Use those other heads on groundhogs, chipmunks or something when you get bored up in your stand, which will probably be most of the time for you this year. ;)
I am totally serious about the Tricks though. Once you shoot them, you will be hooked.

After what I have seen from Muzzy, I see absolutely no reason to switch from them. They may not be $10/head, but when you get results like this, you realize they do the job and do it well:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i58/creamernator/DSC_0069.jpg
The entrance was right behind the shoulder, animal was quartering away, exit you see in the photo, THROUGH the shoulder blade. Head needed new blades, but that was it. There is not a darn thing wrong with Muzzy's.

This place has a history of non typical racks for me as I have shot two other non typical racked bucks from this property.... I also have cam pics of a huge bodied buck with a not so big non typical rack there. Perfect 4x side with an odd 3 point side much like the one to follow although without the droptine.
Here are photos of the two bucks.

2004. This is also my "biggest" (highest scoring, not largest bodied however) buck. He came in at a gross non typical P&Y score of 162 1/8. He doesn't exactly look non typical although he does have 3 abnormal points.

There is a story, It is a typical story no great twists and turns.
It was oct 22nd 2006, I got settled in my climber about 2:30 pm. I usually seen most of my deer starting around 5pm. I was in a tree overlooking a small field. I had a small hollow of woods with a pond in it about 50 yards away. The deer tend to funnel from this hollow into larger timber behind me and vice versa depending on time of day. I was about ten after five when he came out of the usual trail in the woods across the field. There was a nice rub line along that trail and I could even see a rub from my stand. Well he continued towards me, but he knew something was up. He was facing me about 25 yards away when he decided to turn to the right. When he was about 30 yards away to my left he stopped along a narrow strip of pines that is in the field. Quartering away shot at 30 yards. Caught liver, aorta, and lung. He went max. 25 yards and dropped. I didnt see him drop, so I waited about 30 minutes, went to where I shot him seen all the blood, walked through the narrow strip of pines(15yards) and there he lay. I was able to drive right up to him and load him up. Easiest deer I have ever killed.

How did your guys season go last year? Any stories or photos to share?
Here's my Fayette County 8 pointer I killed three days before the end of the early PA archery season last year. Most certainly not the biggest, but one of my most rewarding.
It was a cool, slightly breezy morning on stand that day and I'd only seen one little button buck by 10:00am. I was contemplating getting down and coming back for an evening hunt when suddenly I noticed movement down below and to my right. It (whatever it was) was moving at a solid pace when within thirty yards I realized it was a buck. He came right to my "window" and I doe bleated with my mouth to stop him... He stopped, I shot and he took off straight away from me. All this happened in a matter of seconds.
I collected my thoughts for awhile, replaying the shot in my head over and over and then I got down. I went to where he was standing last and there was good blood everywhere. I trailed him about 20 yards and then I backed out and took all my things to my truck.
When I continued my search I only needed to go about 20 more yards and he was balled up under a blowdown.
Double lunged him a 23 yards.
He dressed out @ 177lbs

Buckeyebuckhntr-lets hear your stories with some pics.
October 31st, 2006 was rather gloomy with showers most of the day, that continued on all evening. I got settled into my highwall / coal pond / saddle stand in Coshocton County at 2:45 that afternoon.
The bucks weren't chasing much but were hitting the scrapes really hard. Once I arrived to my setup I freshened up a rather large scrape with Ms. Doe Pee's (Estrus Urine) before climbing up and settling in for my evening hunt. The first three hours were uneventful as far as whitetail sightings. Now fast forward to 5:20pm. I saw a good buck I am guessing 60 yards out that was slowly closing the distance to my coal pond / highwall / funnel setup. He just wasn't making much forward progress as he was hitting every scrape throughout the "hourglass" leading into my 20 yard wide funnel.
After what seemed like an eternity he finally made his way to the scrape that I freshened up a mere 10 yards away and proceeded to thrash the licking branch and paw out the scrape, nearly doubling it in size. It was quite the sight.
Once his attention was off the scrape I was anticipating him to turn broadside and offer a shot as he was at the time facing me directly head on. I was let down big time to see him pull a 180 and walk straight away from me. The only thing going through my mind at that time was disappointment from a close encounter that turned into a missed opportunity. Thankfully, five yards later he turned to his right taking him across a saddle that attached the two large ridges rather than going back across the other funnel which he came from. He was then quartering away so hard I had no shot from the severity of the angle. Luckily, he turned to a slight quartering away position and I touched off the shot at 33 yards.
150 yards (and my longest tracking job) later I recovered my largest bodied buck weighing in at 197 pounds dressed. It was a real wet evening that turned into a great night....... I was pretty pumped to tag my first Halloween buck!
(sorry if I was to long winded)

Yeah, I had fun last year. Tagged 2 does and a buck, all by bow.
This was last year's buck, not my biggest but it was a great hunt:
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i58/creamernator/DSC_0069.jpg
I had that buck come over the ridge in front of me right before dark, only deer I saw on a 70-degree night in early November. I gave him The Can, and he looked at me and kept walking away from me. I pulled up the Buck Growl, got real aggressive with him. Well, he didn't care too much for the Growl I gave him, did a 180 and turned right back for me. I sent a Muzzy through his lungs at a hair over 20 yards. His death sprint was short and quick, and I heard him go down. Not a much better feeling than that!
This is my wall, which I hope to add to this year. :D

What are your guys goals the first day? Are you looking only to tag out or you holding out for something really nice?
Pesonally, the only way I'm releasing an arrow Saturday is if I see an unquestionable slammer. Which of course I hope happens, but more then anything I like to get in the woods and get a feel for how I think things will shake out during the rut.
I really don't doe hunt the first day either because of the likely hood of the unknown with respect to bucks in the neighborhood and the threat of making some early season patterned slammers go totally nocturnal straight out of the gate.

Athens County.
My buddy and I are taping on opening night. I can't hunt in the morning because of an eye doctor's appointment, but that evening we will be trying to get some action on camera. We have a doe hotspot lined up. It's very minimal intrusion, and trail cameras tell us it is "doe central." I am not the least bit afraid to stock the freezer on opening day. :mischeif:

TheCream
09-29-2007, 10:59 PM
This was easily the best opening day I have ever had, and I was behind the camera the whole time! We hunted that plot, got somewhere around 14-17 different deer on video (I'll have to count), one decent young 8-pointer and a TON of does, and got 40 minutes of awesome footage. We were covered up in deer all night. I taped my buddy missing the same doe THREE TIMES in about a minute! How valuable is that footage to him? He may pay top dollar to acquire and destroy that tape. :D
He finally did redeem himself, sticking a big juicy doe at 20 yards while she munched on brassicas! Blood has been spilled, his freezer stocked. Tomorrow I'll be shooting, he'll be filming, and we'll be in my ground blind on the edge of the big plot! :mischeif:

Didn't connect, but saws LOTS of deer. 25+ deer by 9:10 on opening morning and 15+ deer the following day. Had 3 deer pass 15 yards from me while I was on the ground standing behind a small tree. The Scent Smoker passed the test with flying colors and I'm sold on this concept completely after the results I had this weekend. Saw two deer that i knew were bucks, not shooters, but nice rack buck nonetheless. Many of the deer were does and a few I just couldn't tell for sure.
It was a success in many ways. I'm already seeing plenty of rubs and community scrapes have already opened up shop.

Beautiful evening to hunt tonight and I saw tons of wildlife. It all started with a few squirrels, then chipmunks, then a rabbit, then two coons in a tree 15 yards away eating wild grapes, then i finally seen some deer. About 520 I had a doe come in about 15 yards and chill out for a while, then about 610 I had a large doe with two yearlings one of em was a bb and I couldnt really tell what the other was but it looked like a bb as well. At that was about it. It was a great evening in the woods.

I could care less about the weather, I just am waiting on the time to get out! I'm actually going to hunt behind my house a few times this weekend. Several juicy does on the trail cams there, and it's a very low-impact walk in and out of the woods. Should be good for the warmer weather. I don't want to risk busting my good spots right now hiking in and sweating up a storm.

Well heres the story. I got settled in at 1:52 pm today in hopes of catching a buck moving early with this cooler weather. At 6:05 it was already getting really dark due to the overcast conditions. I hit my can call three times just to have something to do. Less than a minute after my last call, a grey fox runs in within 15 yards of my stand. He stopped suddenly right out in front of me, paused for a second and then took off running. I figured it had to be a deer that scared him off and a minute later a doe came down off the opposite ridge. She messed around for about 10 minutes before giving me a broadside shot at 16.5 yards at 6:22 pm. I thought I heard her crash down the hollow from me. After the track she ended up going 60 yards with a double lung shot placement.

I dont know what happened with my arrow on my doe, I thought I had a pass thru but when I looked I couldnt find my arrow. About 20 yards down the blood trail I found the part you see in the pic, about 6-8in past the fletching. I never found the rest of it or the broadhead but it was dark so I could have missed it. The reason it is strange is I have an entrance hole and an exit hole. The exit is what you see in the pic. Any ideas to what happened, the vanes were completely blood covered until i messed around with it.

Looks like may have hit the leg bone. That may have kept the arrow from passing on thru. She probably broke it off when she went on the death march. She is a nice one, It's worth a broken arrow.

Your right John, I also had a terrible blood trail. Once I gutted her I seen where she mostly bled under the hide. It must have been from where I hit the leg. I believe that most of the blood on the trail was from the mouth/nose.

Well fellas, I thought I would have had some doe points Saturday night, but the old girl winded one of us (my buddy was cameraman) and just in the nick of time to save her life! She was at 25 yards, quartered to me, walking a path that would have given me a 12-15 yard broadside shot, when she picked up a scent. I had drawn on another doe earlier in the evening, but she was trotting through past us after a small buck had pushed her and I couldn't get her stopped in a lane.
After getting winded Saturday night, I decided now was the time to try the Scent Smoker. I smoked up all my stuff Sunday, hunted that night. Had 2 does and a red fox all pass downwind of me and nothing got alarmed! The does milled around for a good 40 minutes and never got spooky, the fox was just lolly-gaggin' through the woods. So far, I'm sold on the concept!
Be patient, I'll add points soon. Just haven't had as much time to hunt lately.

Public land and I have seen deer out in the fields near there in the evening so I figured I would give it a try. Got settled in about 630 and from 730-1130 i was covered with deer. I ended up seeing 13 deer total all does and yearlings but no shot opportunities under 30 yards. Ill be back out this evening.

We would have a commanding lead had a doe not screwed me over last night. A pair of does came in on me about 6PM, the big one had eyeballed something in my tree that she wasn't too sure of. She's standing there at 5 yards when a 135-140" 8-pointer with 10-11" G2's came strutting in behind them. He was at 15 yards, nothing I could do. He finally chased after her and I was able to draw, but it was too late and I had no shooting lanes. Oh well, there's always tomorrow! :cheeky-smiley-022:

11-08-2007, 07:06 PM
Okay, sorry about that. Between hunting, work, home and family I've been quite busy these days.
It started just like any other day on stand. I headed in to my ladder before light and set up on the hill looking down the ridge and on either side with plenty of nice openings for deer to cross and to meander out from their night time feeding places as they worked their way back to cover or to continue the "dance" that had not yet ended. :bouncy:
Around 7:30 I look slightly behind and to my left and spot a decent 8 point on the trail. He's directly down wind of me, but has no clue (thanks to the Scent Smoker), but moves away and does not present a shot.
About a half hour later a huge buck (body-wise, I was unable to see exactly how big his rack was) came crashing down over the hill chasing a doe. He ran all the way to the bottom and disappeared on the other side. Enough to make my heart skip a beat, but not enough for me to grab the bow.
After that encounter the woods went quiet. I had carried my climber with me to the woods that morning just in case I needed to make adjustments during the day. I decided to drop down in the bottom and move up into an area with clear sign and great views with water, plenty of food and cover to my right where the deer like to cross from one ridge to the next complete with a nice low spot for them to do so.
As I'm making my towards my new spot three deer come straight down the hill directly towards me. Two doe and a small four point. They run to within 15 yards of me and stop. They know something is not right but they can not wind me (thanks again to the Scent Smoker) so they slowly and calmy slid to my right and move along with not one snort.
Finally I make it to my "new" spot which I will stay in till dark no matter what I see. I know I do not want to be moving all over the woods during this time of the year. Just as I'm pulling up my bow, I see a nice deer on the ridge directly across from me. I pull up the binocs and positively indentify an 8 point moving with his nose to the ground and away from me.
The woods would turn silent for a couple of hours till around 2:45pm. That's when I notice movement on the same ridge. This time the deer is moving right and towards me, but will soon be moving away from me if I don't stop him. I hit my grunt and he stops in his tracks. I check him out with my binocs and am amazed to see that this to is an 8 point, but is not the same one I saw earlier moving on the same trail in the opposite direction.
He then turns and starts coming my way straight down the ridge. He stops for a drink, hits my scent dripper for a moment and then begins to move. I try and decide if this is the deer I should take or let walk. I've let several bucks walk and was thinking of doing the same with this guy. But in the heat of the moment and as he made that one last step into my "window" I instinctivly bleated at him so he would stop and released and arrow that would pass completely through at 24 yards.
After a 75 yard recovery I had found him piled up 5 feet off an old logging trail.
The very next morning I was headed out to retrieve my stand and to do some doe hunting, the same trail where I encountered the two doe and small four point in the woods was, directly in front of me ON the trail, a beautiful main frame 10 point with stickers that was probably in the 150" range. He even stood there for literally a minute 50 yards in front of me just too make sure I got a good look!!
Thanks again for the congratulations!! Good luck to all of you also and no matter if you score or not, make sure you enjoy the experience and to take what the land will give you. And please be respectful of the woods and treat her gently and we will ALL be better for it!!

Buck down, boys. He's not my finest, but I'm more than pleased! Had a great hunt, was in the stand since 10:30AM, shot this joker right at dusk. Had a really solid 8-pointer and a forkhorn chase the same doe around 1PM, then a young 10 came through at 2:15PM and let him walk. Didn't see another deer until after 5PM, when a little doe came up through the draw behind me. I thought she was alone, then heard a grunt and saw a young 7-pointer chase her up past me. I heard a deeper grunt, looked back and this buck was coming up behind them. Honestly, I misjudged him a little, but I'm still happy! Shot him quartering away at 12 yards, arrow entered the middle of the ribs and exited through the opposite leg. Obviously, he was toast. :D

Buckslayer, you and me both, pal! I am turning into a guide/cameraman for most of the remainder of the season. I'm guiding and filming a buddy tomorrow hoping to help him fill his $15 doe tag before gun season, and I'll be filming some hunts later on. I also plan on introducing a doe to my new muzzleloader in a few weeks, too. :D
