View Full Version : Stupid Deer

Two years ago they didn't touch the brassicas until after a frost, in fact the leaves were up to my knees, before they started to eat them. Last year our brassica plots never got above 2" tall, since the deer were in them all the time, hence no turnips for my home fries. :irked: So this year, we planted double the amount of acreage in turnips, and the plants are now 3"-4" high, and the stupid deer are already eating them. If they would walk another 20 yards, there is established clover for them to munch on. :coco: I guess we are going to have to shoot some of them to try and protect the young seedlings in our food plots when season opens.

That's funny. You plant plots to attract the deer, now you're going to shoot the deer to protect your plots. haha.

Keep us posted on your hunts and plots. Good luck.

Man that is weird! I have always been told the brassicas are not palatable to them until AFTER a frost, when they turn sweet. Right now they aren't touching our Tecomate Ultra Forage from what we can see. We see no browsing evidence on them yet (6" or so high right now), but there are tracks all through the 2" high chicory that was planted at the same time.

Best of luck with the plots!

If its GREEN the deer eat it. Ask my 100 4 foot pines. There's nothing but wooden stocks left. Way too many deer!

Refer to my post in TheCream's post about dew vs. rain. My plots got destroyed. And we took 6 deer off our 80 acres last year...

1023, sorry about your luck. You may want to check out a product called Plotsaver, or think about an electric fence.

I too had all my plots destroyed. I lost everything and so far this year i have gotten permission to hunt land right across the road to hunt two very small woods but they are both surrounded mostly by corn and one bean field. I have seen a few deer over there on the outskirts of the corn last year so i went and got permission. I had put a stand in there early this year and actually just sat in it last night and witnessed 27 deer in the woods that is a little over 100 yards wide and about 250 yards long. 7 bucks 16 mature does and 4 fawns. The biggest is a 12. IMO if you are sick of taking care of plots that get destroyed early in the year then find a small little wooded area that doesnt look like much but is located in the middle of a field with a water source near, you should see a buck.

I have a smaller plot of Whitetial institute that started off pretty good this year, but the deer are eating it so quick that it doesnt have enough time to grow back, so it looks pretty scroungy right now. I thought the plot was doing awful at first, but it was the deer eating it from the sprouts and to the drit. So at least i know that the deer are hitting it good. We got a good amount of rain Sunday, and i fertilized it again before the rain, so hopefully that will give it a chance to grow better, and attract me some deer when im in the stand!!! 16 days away!!!!!!!

The generator for the fence may scare them off better than the fence.

Guess we need high fences around our plots and open & close them every- other day.
