i just leased a small piece of property to deer hunt. 50 acres, it is a older holly tree farm with 25 acres of overgrown field with 20-25 ft holley trees thru out. the other 25 is woods. i want to make a starter plot for the fall. this will be a low budget, low tech attempt. we mowed the intended spot which is about 3/4 acre total today. i have a guy coming wensday to back drag the spot ith a bobcat to clear the grass from it. here's were the ?'s start.
1) should i spray it after he drags it clear, or hold him off till i spray it? ( times ticking)
2)what the most cost friendly spray, and will it affect these holly trees ?( i was looking at killzall, and roundup ?( which type of these works best)
3)not really enough time to take a soil test, and adjust soil . would it be acceptable to spread lime after a spray or at the time it's planted?
4) thinking of a mix of imperial no plow, wintergreens, and winter peas. am i ok with these choices ?
5)i plan on using a harrow and or a old time bed spring to loosen up what the bobcat digs up. how would i go about sewing seed in this ? would it be ok to just broadcast seed on top of this ?

i don't have access to funds, or time to have this done by someone with better equipment right now, but want this to help hold the deer as the property does'nt really have a mast crop to hunt. sorry so long, but thats it in a nutshell. sb

Like you said times a ticking. It's so late now I don't think I would bother spraying, Have your buddy grub it off as best he can, Go over it with your bed spring or harrow and get it planted. I would get about 6 bags of pelleted lime and put it down before you run over it with your bed spring. I'm not sure whats in Imperial No Plow, but something like that that requires minimal soil prep is what I would use. I would also consider an oat crop like Buck Forage or Plotspike. Also I would take a soil test and get it in right away. You can go to Biologic"s website and download the form. They will email the results back within 48 hours of when they get it. Then if you really need alot of something you can add it. Getting into September we will have alot of rainy days, If you need to add fertilizer or lime you can do it right before, or better yet during a rain. Another thing I would do is get an exact measurement on the field, I've been off on just about every plot I've put in. Now I use my rangefinder to get the dimensions. There are roughly 43000 sq ft to the acre or an area 208ft x 208ft is an acre. This way in the spring you should have the soil in pretty good shape and you can spray and work the ground up a lot better. Good Luck!!

thanks for taking the time to reply to my ?'s. the bobcat did'nt do as well as i'd hoped it would. i don't think the bedsprings will have much effect besides dragging it clean. i'm going to spray it and add some lime and fertilizer asap. i've decided on using secret spot and shot plot on it. i figure if nothing else i'm improving it for a spring planting. thanks again. sb
