In 1985 I believe it was I had my boy and his friend the same age about 14 years old to our cabin near Glennie at the Ausauble River. I try to teach kids safety and to follow the rules.
We took the 14 Foot Aluminum boat out, this is a bare bones boat, built in seats across the boat, tiller steering etc.
It was opening day of Pike season and we had been out on the Ausauble River for a few hours below the 5 Channel dam in a little shallow back waters trying to catch Pike, we had a few Perch in a wire fish Basket hanging from the boat.
I saw a boat approaching thru the stump infested water, what caught my attention to the boat was the noise he made hitting some submerged stumps, in this area you had to Idle very slow to avoid the stumps, but this person was trying to do about 6 to 7 miles per hour, I thought that was odd, he must be new to this part of the river.
The boat came right to us and under the coat he was wearing that wasn't zipped up I could see the DNR uniform.
He said good morning and that he was the DNR and could he see my license and Registration, he was polite about it. I showed him the license and registration for the boat and then he looked at our few fish.
He looked kind of puzzled and was eyeing the boat from end to end, I said is there some thing wrong? He said yes can I see your life preservers ? I then got a puzzled look on my face and I am thinking this is a trick Question, I thought for a minute then I said is there a new law that we need more preservers than we have on?
The boys were wearing the bright orange around the neck type and I had a green flat vest type on, we always wore our vests. He looked up and his eyes went from the boys to me and said ""OH"" and mumbled some thing and said no what you have are fine. he quickly left avoiding any more eye contact. The DNR officer was about 50 feet away and my boys friend said "" Jees what did he do take extra strength dumb pills today, I schussed him but it was comical.
I always teased the boys by saying "Did you take extra strength dumb pills when they screwed up,
In the Dnr officers defense he was just not used to seeing people wear life preservers and just assumed there were none in the boat even though the boys had on bright orange ones.
