I will be spending some time around Logan on 9-14 and 15. I am planning on taking a canoe trip on the hocking, and do some fishing. I have never fished the hocking and was hoping that someone could give me some pointers on what to fish for that time of year, and what bait to use. I was thinking smallmouth, but like to fish for anything. Also will be C & R everthing. Thankyou for any info in advance.

IMO, the Hocking River is one of the best rivers for smallies in Ohio. I would take a wide range of baits, ranging from buzz baits, to tube jigs, (chartreuse, watermelon, smoke, dark green, and pumpkinseed colors are all excellent choices). Rapala floating minnow, is also a good choice. And the old "ace in the hole" Rebel Craw. I caught my PB smallie just outside of Nelsonville, a 4.6lb. hawg! Best of luck! Hopefully I'll be able to take a trip out there in Sept. as well. I also need to pick up a new pair of Rocky's!

Thanks for the info guys. I did not realize the diversity that the hocking held. What kind of structure do the crappie use in the river and what bait work best. I make my own crappie jigs, and love to fish them in shallow water under a float would this work? Thanks again for the great info.

We floated the hocking on 9-15 caught several smallies and a couple of spotted bass. Nothing huge all between 8 to 13 in.but still fun most fish were caught on a white rooster tail. All fish were released, and again thanks for the info everyone contributed.
