Welcome to the 2007/2008 Ohio Sportsman Deer Hunting Contest. As you can see we have made the rules similar to those set up at MS.com. If you are at all interested in joining in and being apart of a team be sure to thoroughly read this entire post so you know how it’s going to work.
CONTEST FORMAT
The contest will be run according to Ohio deer seasons from September 29, 2007 until February 3, 2008 (including youth season). The picture of your deer must be submitted no later than midnight on February 3, 2008.
The 2007/2008 contest will be a mixed weapon format with teams evenly sorted between firearm and bow hunters to provide equal opportunity to all contestants. By combining teams by weapon of choice we hope to include as many deer hunters as possible. Basically how it will work is:
Each member which signs up for the contest chooses the ‘primary weapon’, either a firearm or bow, that they will be hunting with. If that member is successful throughout the course of the deer season with that weapon they can submit it for scoring. However, if that member is successful, but with the weapon they did not choose that deer will not count for scoring purposes. ie: Joe chooses bow for his primary weapon, but shoots a buck w/ his rifle on Nov. 15. Therefore Joe can not submit his deer for scoring. (If you choose to be a bow hunter and kill a deer in gun season with your bow you can still enter it as long as it was shot by bow and not gun! For gun hunters you can enter deer from any gun season. Unless we have a lot of entries, we will probably have two man/women teams.
The number of entries will decide the final number of people on a team.
REGISTRATION
The sign up will begin on August 24th and close at 11:59PM Sunday September 9th, 2007. At that time teams will be created at random and posted in a thread titled “2007/2008 Ohio Sportsman Deer Hunting Contest Teams” .
DIRECTIONS
This contest will include only legal wild Whitetail deer taken during the 2007/2008 Deer season in Ohio.
If you have a successful hunt, submit your deer for scoring by completing the following (if any steps are missed or incorrect your deer WILL NOT count!!!):
1- Take a picture w/ you and the entire deer. (Not just the head!) A 2007/2008 Ohio Deer Tag must also clearly be displayed in the picture. To prove what weapon was used 1 of 2 things must happen. Either the weapon used must be clearly displayed with you and your deer, or a close up picture of your FILLED tag with weapon used marked off must be provided.
2-Upload your deer to the OS.com 2007 Ohio Deer Contest gallery along with the following information:
A- Title the picture: Team#_Bow or Firearm_Type of deer_07
Examples: Team 16_Bow_doe_07 or Team 9_Gun_8pointbuck_07
B- In the body you MUST fill in the following fields:
Your team name and number
Sex of the deer
The number of tines that are longer than 1 inch (main beam counts) - (If 1 inch tine is questionable supply a photo with a measurement against the tine for verification.)
Date the deer was taken
The weapon you used to take the deer
3-Post your picture in the thread titled: 2007/2008 OS Deer Hunting Contest Photo Entry write in the same mandatory information from #2 below your picture.
4-(Optional) Post the picture of you and the deer somewhere in your team thread to let them know of your success.
SCORING:
- (Bow Hunters) Each bow hunter will be allowed to submit 1 antlered and 1 antlerless deer or 2 antlerless deer(both must taken with their chosen weapon) for scoring.
- (Gun Hunters) Each gun hunter will be allowed to submit 1 antlered and 1 antlerless deer for the contest. Both must be taken with their chosen weapon for scoring.
Antlerless (ANY deer with antlers of LESS than 3 inches in length)=5 points
An antlered deer will= 5 points + the number of tines one inch or longer.
Scoring will be kept in the Scoreboard thread and will be updated every few days as new posts arrive in the successful hunter thread.
Keep in mind that this contest is for fun and should never be taken too seriously. As we go deeper into this we surely will find discrepancies as well as unforeseen circumstances that may appear to hinder any one person or his/her team. While we will do our best to reasonably accommodate any governing abnormality that may arise I can't guarantee everyone's complete satisfaction. Please remember that each case will be judged individually and given the same consideration regardless of who is requesting or when they do so.
Please keep this thread for questions regarding the contest, as the actual thread to sign up will be forthcoming.

I didn't see any rules about using outfitters. No offense to anyone, it just wouldn't seem fair to independent hunters. After all anybody can pay for a world class deer that an outfitter has worked hard to manage and produce.
Lucky
08-23-2007, 05:42 PM
That's true, but when it comes down to it, the hunter is still the one who has to let the arrow fly. Not to mention all the other effort that goes into it, like scent control. The Outfitter can only do so much, the rest is up to the client.
BIG_E
08-23-2007, 05:49 PM
I agree with Lucky the outfitter can only do so much.. He doesnt kill the deer for the client and the client doesnt always get that monster buck.. The client still has to put time into practice shooting and scent control and other aspects of the hunt that lead you to getting that monster. The outfitter puts you on a deer and its your job to come through in the end.

But the customer still only paid half the dues.. Besides washing a load of laundry, signing a check, and making the shot, all he has to do is show up.

I didn't see any rules about using outfitters. Talk about stirrin the pot, I hope that's not the intent. No offense to anyone, I hear ya but why did you bring it up??? it just wouldn't seem fair to independent hunters. After all anybody can pay for a world class deer that an outfitter has worked hard to manage and produce. Cmon, the contest is for fun. Yes, absolutely we try to make it fair as well. Pray tell...why would anyone want to pay an outfitter just to win a contest over the "independent hunters" ??? where no prizes of any kind are offered  And why would I care if someone did?????? :coco: :dizzy:
More power to em. As long as it's not a "canned" hunt, I could care less. I will congratulate any deer hunter who harvests a trophy without fencing them in, whether they paid big $$$ to hunt the land or did it the "independent" way. Now the question is who will I think more of?

then that's it.. answered my question. I wasn't trying to stir the pot. Just asking a question.. But i fear that if the contest winner is announced and the soup finds out the winner was an outfitter buck, the proverbial pot may boil over, at no stirring of mine

Can't argue that. And why would I care if someone did?????? :coco: :dizzy: Because you try to make it fair as well? Again, I really don't care who wins the "no prize contest", it's all about the excitement it generates on the site and the stories and the pics. I for the most part want to believe this can be a fun contest/season. My enthusiasm won't change because of it nor will my goals or methods. I hope everyone approaches this with similar interpretations.

Nope, not the answer, merely MY opinion. Again, no problem with your asking. Ed is leading this so I hope he can answer the question but...and there's always a but...IMO if this question is not answered to anyones' satisfaction, they have the choice of NOT participating.

If you want to spend all the money to hire an outfitter just to take a deer for a no prize contest, then more power to you. I really don't care, this is supposed to be fun and that is what it is going to be.

I know one thing, I'm getting lost in all these quotes!!!! Like Ed said, this is a contest for fun, and no prize is involved. If someone who does win it went with an outfitter then consider the second place team the winner, who cares it's for fun. Good Luck to everyone!!

Yes you did, Muzzleloader to be exact. This will be fun.
I used to be a fanatic bowhunter, first bow kill over 30 years ago, used to bow hunt a few states every year.
Now I'm too old and fat to climb trees well and I'm having complete knee replacements this winter, scheduled around the deer gun seasons of course:D

That's fine by me. I was just shocked it took that long. I am one of the few that have absolutely NO problem with what weapons a hunter uses so long as he is ethical and efficient with it. I love my muzzleloader almost as much as my bow. They are just too much fun to shoot.

As long as it's a legal weapon to hunt with in Ohio, why are we limiting ourselves to a weapon of choice? I've been on several other online deer contests in the past and it didn't really matter what type weapon you used as long as it was legal.

I like the idea of 4-5 per team, Question, since we only have one firearm hunter at this time how will you even out the teams, and the score, since he can only enter one deer? My thoughts are that since there is only one let him enter two deer like everyone else.

Since the closing of the sign up thread, I received a couple of pms from members requesting inclusion in the contest. Since it is a fun contest and I think we want everyone who wants in to be included, I am reopening the thread until noon today, 9/10/07 for the "procrastinators" :) .
This is absolutely the final chance to sign up, as I need to get the drawing completed today and the teams posted by tonight.
I will close the thread at 12 noon today. Last chance ladies and gentlemen :D

If you end it now you've got 68 with country road. That gives you 17 teams of 4. Most the other contests I've been in do it the same way, if they don't have an even number they allow it to continue sign ups until they reach an even number and stop it as soon as they do. So, unless you get two more by 12 I'd say your good to go. Question is what if you get one or three more to sign up in that time frame:confused:

We have 68 entered. I have closed the thread and will begin the random drawing to determine teams. Now I'm going to lunch ;)
Looks like it will be 17 teams (4 per team). Sound good?
Thanks everyone. Should be a fun time :)

At least I don't have to worry about being draft choices and being the last one picked.
p.s. I would of held out for bigger dollars anyways!

I cannot believe that I missed this opportunity. Good luck to all! I guess I need to get on here a little more often, and pay attention to other posts besides the archery.

I have made arrangements with the site administrator to put a picture of the winning team up on the OS.Com home page for at least a week. So along with bragging rights you will have your team picture displayed.
Good luck

Great job thus far guys. There seems to be lots of extra traffic on the site these days.
I have a suggestion for an extra twist.....
Can you make an Amendment and add a 1/2 point for each turkey taken during archery season?
