We hunted the opener on a farm on the Scioto/Pike Co. line. We didn't hear a gobble or a cluck all morning:(
Tuesday we hunted about 4 or 5 different properties in Jackson Co. and we didn't hear anything again. Talked to a few groups of hunters that said that they heard a lot of gobbling on Monday, and some of them got birds, but they all said that they didn't hear any Toms Tuesday morning:confused:
I'll think I wait untill next week to try again, maybe the boys will be looking for some new love......steveOh

I heard one gobble on the opener. He gobbled till 8:30am then shut off. I was on him, but lost him. I was hunting the family farm in Vinton. Wed I didn't hear a gobble and it was 80 degrees!! I did bag a nice 2 year old though at 10:45am. He came in silent.

Good job 10pt! The hot mid morning sun does tend to shut em up and it's tuff going usually if you can't get em early. Patience, persistance, and "small talk" can go a long way on hot days;) ..TF

The last time I was out was Sunday. We roosted a bird Sat night and was on him at sunrise. he was henned up to the hilt, but he gobbled every breath. We did have a jake come in and gobble in our dekes for 30 minutes. When the gobbler got led off by the hens my partner went ahead and hammered the jake. This was his first. Sunday was the best gobbling day I have had in two years of hunting. I bet between the gobbler and the jake I heard a good 100 gobbles in about an hour. Plus that doesn't count the other birds on roost gobbling on the back side of the property.

The cool overcast mornings semm to be to their liking. Have heard sporadic gobbling all morning long in my area. But, many of the mature gobblers are still with hens and I'm about to go nuts! It's been a long time since I have'nt taken a bird the first week of season:mad: But' I'll be back for round 10 in the am!!...TF

I scouted and roosted dozens of birds 4/24 & 4/25 and hunted with my 15 yr old son during the youth hunt 4/26 & 4/27 in Morgan County. During those 4 days we heard several birds and I called 2 nice Toms to within 10 yards (walked in behind us) but my son got spotted moving his gun and the boys are both still heading north.
On Opening Day 4/28 it was more hunters calling with owl and crow calls than birds gobbling and as the week progressed it seemed to get worse. I hunted until Sunday (5/4) and only managed to get close to birds on the roost when they would fly down they were almost imeadiately with hens and ignoring my pleas.
Some turkey hunters have got to be the dumbest people on the face of this earth! They need to have their owl and crow calls shoved in their  !! On several occasions a bird would gobble 2 ridges away at least a 1/4 mile maybe more and every goofball with a crow or owl call would start calling back? They would keep this up trying to get an answer and never moved an inch toward the bird they were calling to?!?! I thought these calls were to be used to locate the bird not try to see how many times you could get him to answer?!?!
I'm sure none of you guys would do something this rediculous but if you know somebody who does explain to them how to use the locater call. I explained it to a few knuckleheads last week but I don't think they got it!
Ever try a moose call as a locater? Works great and usually scares the hell outta those knuckleheads who don't know what a locater call is really used for!:D

Had 4 jakes into the decoys this morning but the closest they would come was 25yds feeding and scratching with an ocassional glance at the decoys. Finally was able to get a shot off with my recurve and hit right under the bird for a clean miss:( They milled around and putted not knowing what was going on. I was able to knock another arrow and get a second shot but a branch slightly deflected the arrow and wacked a dead elm dead center:mad: All four high tailed it out of there in a hurry, puttin all the way!
I gathered my stuff and headed to the truck for the quick trip to another spot. I just got out of the truck when I heard a gobble off the point of the big hay field. Grabbing the gun this time, I skirted the field and set up. Finally caught the old boy without hens:D Been keeping track since opening day and had worked this same bird different times from diff positions to no avail. At 11;00am i called him out of the woods and across the field which took and hour and a half. Nice bird, 20 lbs with a 9 1/2" beard and 1" spurs.I won the battle this time;) .....TF
