The spring mis-adventures of Lance have finally ended!
For the first time this year I got out for a couples hours of fishing and it the day actually went well. Fished the Chagrin at Gilson Park and hooked 8 steelhead and landed 6. Most of the fish were on gravel but there were a number in the deeper water also. Water was extremely clear but suprisingly small flies were not the answer today. size 10 stoneflies were the ticket, fishing single fly no dropper. Must have been the overcast skies. I also landed my largest steelhead today which was a hen that was right around 30" or better. My tape measure died so I need to take my rod home and measure it to where I laid the fish out. What a way to spend a couple hours!
Hope the fish hand around through the weekend I may get one last blast.:)

I fished the chagrin yesterday (thursday) for a few hours. Fishing was good early, but died once the sun came out. Seasong will be winding down quickly without a shot of rain. With the low water, and bright sun, the water clouds up from algae bloom by early afternoon.
Anyway, hooked and landed 3 in a little over an hour. One was a hen that went a little better than 30". Sadly, I couldn't revive the fish, so I gave it to another angler. The fish in deep quick water were hot early, but moved into riffles when the sun got high. Didn't see any other fish landed. Alot of people were snagging fish trying to get them to bite. Fishing for steelhead in 5" of water isn't productive. You're likely to snag 5x as many fish as you hook sportingly. Obviously, fish that shallow aren't feeding. Just my opinion though, but I'll guarentee that fish that you can't see (they can't see you either) are much more apt to bite than a spawned out steelie struggling to breath in the riffles are.

Glad to hear you made it up. What part of the river did you fish? Suprisingly enough the fish were very actively feeding while on the gravel in the stretch I was on. The big hen actually moved 2' cross current to get my dead drifted fly. Suprised the heck out of me. The fish Ihooked in deeper water did put up the best fight though. Getting a little rain here in Eastlake. Hope to fish one last time Monday at noon.

Fished at daniels.
I'm planning on making a trip monday, probibly my final one for the season. I met a guy last week who was also having luck with stonelflies. He had tied up some weird looking deals in about a size 6 that looked more like big hexes...not much like my stoneflies.
Hopefully the rain continues, even a small spike in the water could help alot.

We got a very nice spike in the water today. If there is no more rain it should be very good conditions monday if the fish haven't all washed back out by then. I'll probably keep lower in the river monday. Start a Gilson then move to Chagrin River Park off rt 2. if it looks bad I'll head down stream for the soccer fields if there's time. I only have from noon to 2:30 to fish so we shall see. I'll be suprised to see any fish in the shallow stuff by then. Maybe I'll see you. I drive a blue 4x4 Dakota with a license "flytyin"

Ask and ye shall receive. This rain oughta be enough to keep fish in the river a few more days. I wouldn't be surprised if a small rush of fish were to come in from the lake. Seems to me that the steelhead will stick around in the river as long as they can tolerate.
Just looked at flow data, and weather forecast, and monday looks good. Possible thunder storms, but I don't mind. I'm gonna try and make it up to chagrin as early as possible, probibly 0630-0700. Not sure where I'll fish, will start upstream and work down. Driving a red s-10 tattooed with a marine corps sticker. I'll keep an eye out for your dakota....and if your nifty vanity plate disapears......well..i can't be held acountable
