Well what part of the quantum theory don't you understand  :coco:

ENERGY -

VELOCITY SQUARED x ARROW WEIGHT IN GRAINS - DIVIDED BY 540,240 = FOOT POUND OF ENERGY
:yeahthat: :mischeif:

bowmiller

for hunting, speed don't mean a thing to me. I shoot the heaviest arrow that my bow will shoot properly. I'd rather have a 700 grain arrow traveling at 160fps than a 450 grain arrow traveling 190fps. heavy arrows make bows quieter(because they make them more efficient), are less likely to be thrown off course by the little twig you didn't see out there 40 feet away, and most importantly, penetrate living tissue and bone better than lighter arrows. speed is a marketing gimmick.

well you said basically what i'd say...i like to counter punch...let the others speak first...that was my intention when i started this...let others speak first...but at this point i will add...its getting close to the animal that really makes my heart pound...the closer i am the harder it pounds...lets me know my heart is still good...makes me feel good to trick a deers senses...and the less the high tech the better...like i say..."10 yds. and in makes me grin"...so at that close who needs speed...even a 1000gr. arrah will shoot flat at that distance and pass thru anything you hit, most of the time...but at that distance so will a 2213 orange xx75 29" long tipped with a 2 blade fred bear razorhead...its the ultimate challenge in hunting the whitetail...thats what i crave...thats bout all i need to say...but i'll roll with the punches...punch on...:D

its about foot pounds of energy - in the formula you will see that the velocity is squared but the arrah weight stays linerar - soooooooo a small change in speed will give you a much greater increase in energy then a small increase in arrow weight - its KENETIC ENERGY that determines arrow peneration :D

for those of you who think that speed and kinetic energy are more important than the weight of you arrow please take the time to try this little experiment:

get a throwing machine that will handle something the size of a golf ball and a chronograph.

set it up to shoot a ping-pong ball 300 fps and stand 45 feet away and shoot yourself in the chest with the ping-pong ball going 300 fps. record resulting injuries.

now set up thrower to launch a golf ball at 180 fps and stand 45 feet away and shoot yourself in the chest with the golf ball. if you are still living, record resulting injuries.

heavy things are harder to stop once they are in motion. they tell me that is called momentum.

Man! you guys gave up way to early on this one.

Something to concider. With the minumum bow weight for hunting being 40#'s and for those that like to shoot lets say 10 gr per # or even 12 gr per# for some that is supposed to be a respectable weight. You might get 150 to 16fps with that set up. Now take that same weight arrow and shoot it out of a 50# bow and increase the speed by 30 to 40 fps or even 50 with a well tuned more modern bow. (yes even modern wood) The KE, momentum and all other key factors have been increased.

In the environment of the deer hunting woods it is ever changing. In the early fall the thick canopy can deflect the sound straight down towards the intended target or can be absorbed, as the leave loose their grip and fall to the ground the trees open up changing the sound of any bow. too close and the deer may move faster than you think. I also read on every site where someone misses because the deer was too close and shoots right over the back. Partially because of the angle but also because of the reaction time of the deer.

if that was me,cause i said that...the deer didnt hear the bow...well anyway the deer did not react or move at the shot...so it did not jump the string which is the case with almost all my shots,my bows are very quiet...if its a miss...i just plain missed...i can not shoot steep angles well...case in point...it holds true on my rubber deer too...:D
