I'm into putting "STONE" through Deer's midsections. The range is usually under ten yards. These points put on a natural wood shaft in the proper manner will drill through a deer as good as any high tech. arrow made today. Im the first to admit there only for us few that like to get up close and personal , "face to face" with one that 's bloodshot eye's are not much more then a bow lenth away!!! try it and you'll know the primitive feeling that's not felt much these days. Enjoy - jcdflint:p

jd do you knape the points yourself or do you have someone make them for you?
jcdflint

Beau, I do some flint knapping when I get a chance. I use points from Norm Blaker (Michigan) and others from Ohio and around. I make bows and arrows with natural materials. I really like puting the arrows together the most though. Every now in than I'll use a reknapped original point too . The feeling of using a point that some hunter made 5000 years ago, and using it again is cool!!!

Sure hope you aren't using those in Ohio. They're illegal aren't they?

George, On flint points the sharp edge is totally different. The "SHARPNESS" lies in the valley. As you knapp the edge it causes a valley, that's the sharp part. The peaks are a lot duller so some people think flint points are dull. To prove the point (no pun ) I was at a show and a Guy pick up a stone knife blade and rubbed the endge. He thought it was dull. before we could explain, He put pressure and slid the blade across his hand. Well I think he bleed more than my last deer. You see, with a little pressuse they do work rather well. There's one hunter that knows to well. Be careful, flint "KILLS" Thanks Jeff Drown

yes i understand now...oh i do know they will slice you...and yes they are effctive...also i believe the ohio law states at least 2 cutting edges or something to that effct and the minimal diminsions...doesn't say it has to be steel or rock ...i don't actually know the rule on this but stone seems to qualify in all regards
jcdflint
04-26-2003, 12:34 PM
Ohio law say's points must have mininum of two sharp edges. You must also have them 7/8 inches wide. 7/8 to 1 inch is a good arrow size . the taper of shaft that connects the head "MUST"not be blunt. That will slow down the arrow to much

I think Hoot Gibson uses flint heads too. He said they really tear up a deer and will put one down quickly.

How much is obsidian? I know a guy that knapps and he could make some cool heads from obsidian for me.
jcdflint
04-27-2003, 10:49 AM
Lunker, I don't use much obsidian, but I'll check up on it for you. You can also do a web search " flint knapping obsidian" It might show prices and dealers. I'll get back

i believe its real affordable bout the cost of flint.i think it has a sharper point than flint but not as durable.and it looks nice too

Obsidian chip is the sharpest edge known to man. It has been used by Doctors for a super clean -fast healing cut. I'm shure its cheaper than flint too. You can also use glass that you can find at stain glass shops also. Another cheap solution if your starting into flintknapping is "JOHNSTONE" ,broken up porc. crappers.
It makes a very usable point. Go to a junkyard or dump there usually free! Jeff

I saw Hoot a few minutes after he hacked his hand real good knapping a head last year. Cut em wide open and bled for a couple hours till he went to the hospital and got several stitches. made a believer outta me. Bowmiller killed a doe with a knapped head last year. I think Hoot made it for him. I wouldnt mind giving it a shot someday.

I'd like to learn how to knapp flint arrow heads someday. That would be pretty cool to make your own bow, arrows and arrow heads then kill a deer, hog, elk or turkey.

Jay was the first person that really looked at my bows. The first was a simple D-bow (still my favorite) of osage. I killed my first flint deer with it. It was a small button buck, It's still my fondest hunting memory. Iv'e killed a lot of bigger deer but that one still shacks my nerves,O ya!!!!! Jay made so many different bow that it became a "ART". He was like me , we saw the sweetness of a simple D-bow. It became a real extention of your body. I miss him, GOOD HUNTING JAY!

George, E-mail me sometime I'd like to hunt this fall together if possible. Maybe we could "flint "a deer or two and roast a few fresh deer backstraps on a glowing camp fire. A plate of that with a pile of wild rice makes me wish it was fall already, Jeff Drown

I also make a real tough string from artifical sinew and bees wax. They last forever. I've made and used flat metal trade points. They make a great point. I use very heavy band steel or plate steel that I heat treat after making. I use a hack saw to split shaft, and then sinew it in tight. You must taper shaft to eliminate a blunt end . same as a flint arrow. a little epoxy holds them in place till you sinew it. a good few coatings of varnish seals it fine.
Don't make point to big though About 7/8 inch wide and 1 1/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches long work great for me! If done right they fly great and deep. If anyone would like to get together for a weekend and make some, We could do a seminar get-together.

Shoot I'll take anyone hog hunting if they want to go.
Bad thing is that I only have access to public land and it's only open during certain dates. I'll be deployed overseas this Fall so that ideal is shot out of the water. I'll be returning home just as the Spring season opens on the refuge. I may or may not have time to go...
We'll see how it goes.

This tread is getting a great responce. There seems to be a lot of interest in "PRIMITIVE " bowhunting. We could do a gathering at my house on a weekend or maybe set up a seminar at a OSTA shoot this summer. What do you Guy's think. I bet HOOT would help too. Jeff Drown 740-269-2037
