a am a founding member of osta...#5.i was there when there was only 8 members i think at the 1st meeting at charlie minnichs house.the guy that dreamed it up told me about it before it become reality and when they decided to do it,john raymond an ron ralston i was asked to join an could have been #3 but i waited a few days an ended up #5...it grew fast from the original members.today it is the best its been thanks to great leadership and great members...the shoots are fantastic ,2 days and the camping out is great too...just like a reunion,no buddy is real serious, just out to have a good time

George,

You knew Charlie Minnich? He was a close personal family friend. He taught me how to shoot. My brothers used to mow the grass at Timber Run. Charlie proposed to my mother a year or two after my Dad past away. I always give her grief about it because when Charlie passed away she could have inherited Timber Run and given it to me....:)

I really thought alot of Charlie and kinda when it came to archery I considered him to be a mentor. I was really bummed when he passed away. I'm also really bummed that Timber Run is no longer what it was. I had alot of fond memories there.

You know it's funny that this came up because I was just thinking about him the other day......

I didn't know him well but met him several times and chatted archery with him...he had some awesome english longbows...many an archer one way or another has crossed paths with charlie...if ohio has an archery hall of fame he should be in it

If Charlie was one of the first members then I "might" join....

If you even look at a compound with lust in your eye after joining OSTA they will send the hit squad after you and they will fill you full if wood arrows with judo points shot from longbows :)

There are members who shoot wheels also. If you like traditional equippment you can be a member. No wheels at the shoots though. If a guy shows up at a shoot with a compound they will put a trad bow in his hand and get em shootin. OSTA folks are some of the best.

george tinkham
04-26-2003, 08:52 AM
they will give you a bow to shoot but be sure to hide the compound or don't bring it...some will look at it real funny wondering where the seat is and pedals...they'll try to ride it

jcdflint

I was one of the first group of trad. hunters in OSTA also. I built my own bows and made flint arrows. I've killed five deer with flint so far. I also been active in hunting with handicap hunters . I started the original Physically Challenged Bowhunters of America.
At this time I've been hard at work running my Dental Lab. I started in 2002. But this Fall I would like to take a few blind bowhunters from Ohio out to the woods for a hunt. I started out
being one of John Rooks sighters many years ago. and would like to introduce a few new blind persons to hunting Whitetails with a bow. So anyone who knows anyone that's blind ( male or female)
that would like to try bowhunting, feel free to call me at 740-269-2037 (Jeff Drown). If anyone has seen Dean Torges lately,Tell him I said a very honest "HELLO" Take care All

Beau:

They are so "elite", that their "web-site" is on papress scrolls.

They communitcate by way of "smoke signals".

There are secret handshakes and to tell you the truth, I heard through the "grape-vine" that if they (hoot) would have accepted technology instead of using buck-skin propholactics that Thunderturd would not be in existance today. yep, it's the truth, Hoot is thunder's "daddy".......

Hoot rules the "elitist"/"darkside" world and has a little fella beside him every step of the way...he is called the "real" mini-me. (or mini-hoot as some know him).

They start all their meetings by singing "Koom-bye-ya" mixed w/ ad-libs from "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony"

They speak in "clicking tones". Although not able to break the "tongue" of the "clique", some experts say they are mimicing the sounds of arrows that have missed the "target" and have stuck into trees...but until broken, a clique is just a clique.

Be weary young man, never let your guard down. And may the Force be with you.

I got to hand it to you traditionalists...you guys must carry around 10 or 20 bows each at any given time and are always willing to let someone borrow one....gotta like that!

I think it's the "crack" mentality......"here, try this bow out"...and then they are hooked.....I am pretty much afraid of picking one of those things up, might become a "tradhead" (vs. a crackhead)...I bet you guys get the "dt's" and dry fire those things inside the house just to get your "fix".

hntnfsh
06-27-2003, 09:08 AM
Beau, depends on how far you're willing to travel, I guess.

OSTA currently holds five shoots per year, one of those being a one-day fun shoot. OSTA does not own land or targets. We rely on other clubs who are willing to sign a contractual agreement with us and we split the gate with them. Usually this amounts to a fairly large profit for the host club with minimal work.

As for "mixed shoots", the majority of our members and from my experience the majority of traditional archers, prefer not to shoot with compounders. Not that there's anything personal about it, just we (traditionalists) spend less time at the shooting stake. We don't like backups and our shots are typically more hunting style shots vice target shots.

E-mail me anytime if you think I can be of any assistance.
