in bout 1965 i got the deadhead interested in the bow&arrow.i been shootin muh shakespeare neceda bout a year.an i felt it was time tuh hunt somethin, mainly deer.but first i needed a huntin partner, that was importan back then.tuhday we tend tuh be loners.anyway i finally found a bow that i figured deadhead could get.an he did,a shakespeare b-1 hunter.so we were set,but deadhead needed some practice.an i had the target at my house,an we practiced each nigh an day,tuh git deadhead ready for the hunt.we got purty good tuh 30 yds.,our average shootin distance.90% of our shootin was from here.
*bird huntin on ole mcdonadls hill*
me an deadhead decided tuh hunt birds one day,an we shot an shot at em.jus missin all the time but a few inches.we hunted em in a cow pasture on the plains,on the hill, where athens high school now is,which was bout 3 times higher before they lowered it for the new school.it was a big hill with lots of birds,a paradise for bird huntin,an we got 100s of shots at em.
there was one day i remember well.after days of missin, deadhead got this notion the birds were jumpin up before the arrah got to em.an soon a agreed.on the next bird i tell deadhead ,lets shoot just above the birds head an he agrees this might work.well we stalk up to our preferred 30 yds.i draw muh neceda, deadhead draws his b1-hunter.an we both hold a lil high an let go.feathers go everywhere,we've hit our first bird.our plan worked perfect,my arrah took the head, which it purty well knocked off,an the deadhead centerpunched the body, pinning it to the hillside.we got us our first kill with our bows.this would be the only bird cept for one other we ever got.
*CROW HUNTIN.*
me an deadhead decided tuh try huntin crows next.with our bows of course.an we decided first we needed crow calls,an we purchased them,ps olt i believe.well we read somewhere in outdoor life or one of those mags. that the best way was tuh climb a tree an start callin.so we did an crows came in too but we couldnt hit them but did get some shots.then we learned somewhere tuh put a owl decoy in the tree.an boy did this work,at first we were in crow huntin heaven, shootin an missin til arrahs were gone.i believe deadhead had a hip quiver an i a rubber quickee quiver on muh bow.but things went bad for me an deadhead one day,we were in the tree with calls a callin ,owl up in tree an bows ready,an the crows startn comin in squawkin an makin funny noises, growin, but the bad thing was they were comin by the hunerts and comin fast.soon the tree was black an so was the sky.an the noise was unbelievable...deadhead an i wasnt that high in the tree so we threw our stuff to the ground, jumped outta the tree grabbed our stuff an ran all the way outta those woods.we came back another say an got the decoy.deadhead an i eventually kilt a crow.usin the same attack plan without the decoy,we managed one day tuh knock one off the limb .of course it was disputed whose arrah slayed it,never to be resolved.but the main thing is we took that crow home, cleaned it an cooked it by a recipe from outdoor life called "smothered crow".if i can recall correctly it was covered with some kinda gravey an i thought it was good an so did deadhead.so that was the end of crow huntin, why,we did go crow huntin one more time an the crows didnt show but a fox did...we didnt git no shots but we decded then an there we needed tuh read up on fox huntin an how it was done.:mischeif:

*fox huntin in the keeton woods*
well me an deadhead got our fox calls,we done our readin on fox huntin.we had our ww2 camo coveralls, gloves, face masks or paint an of course our bows.we were ready tuh hunt an slay the fox.preferably a red one.well we set up in ole man keetons woods, tuhday it would be across route 33 from the highschool.of course back then, there was no school an i am not sure if there was a 33.but i think it was a couple yrs old,33 that is.anyway deadhead wasnt too good at callin the fox.until in bout a month i think,we finally had one run in an come at us then it ran away.at first we were lookin for a tree tuh climb instead of thinkin bout slayin the fox.the fox seen us turn our heads,to look for a tree an bolted off for we could get our bows back.deadhead looks at me sayin ,now arent we some real great fox hunters.we left those woods happy just tuh git one comin in,but we were sure tuh git outta there before it got too dark.we hunted fox a few more times seen a few but never was able tuh send an arrah at em.we decided fox just wasnt our thing an we were gettin ready for huntin deer tuhgether.i had hunted deer the year before,i believe i seen none.i dont know if i seen a deer ever, well maybe one that ran out in front of our car one night.from muh dads reaction i think it was the first he ever seen too.:mischeif:

*scoutin at poston*
me an deadhead decide we need tuh learn the poston area well, some workers at the plant had told us it had some deer out by the apple orchard.me an the deadhead got on our camo bikes an headed off to poston, and tuh locate the orchard from the woods side.of course we new where the orchard was goin by the main road.we alway went there tuh git apple cider an apple butter with our mom an dad.anyway we easily found the orchard.it was fairly nice sized,at least a half mile by a half mile or so it seemed back then.it had thousands of trees.these same workers soon told us bout deer stomps.so me an deadhead started lookin for them.an one day out on a hunt i finally seen a deer,a big 10 point buck.i watched it walk up to a pine tree bout 6 ' tall an just tear it tuh pcs.i thought it was mad bout something but seen no reason for this behavior.i was alone out there but i figured if it came after me i could stop it with muh bow an arrah.i couldnt wait tuh tell the deadhead bout this xperience.hopefully i lived tuh tell him bout it.that was a big deer.
deadhead an me snuck in the woods next time out headed for a tree we knew we could easily git in an stand on a branch.we were really not fraid at night in the woods but were on the lookout for that crazed deer or a chargin fox.it usually didnt take us long tuh git to our tree an it took bout one second tuh climb to our perch.i was always thinkin somethin would git me just as i was startin up the tree.i dont know bout deadhead but i did notice he was usually up the tree faster than me.but we were up this day waitin for light.an then we hoped a deer,a big 10 point buck would amble down the trail,30 yards out in front of us.an this was where the deer tore up that tree.oh wernt we brave ones.:mischeif:

*scoutin at poston*
well gettin back to our scoutin.we learned areas like the powerlines very fast an the orchard,an we were seein deer tracks an poop an we figured out what a bed was.an we found many trails.me an deadhead always rode our camo bikes to poston.we always had our bows an still every now an then attempted tuh slay a arra jumpin bird with no luck.but our scoutin would put us soon on our first deer an our first moment of truth.but next, deadhead slays a grounhog.:mischeif:

*deadhead slays a grounhog*
me an deadhead had got into grounhog huntin .read a lil on it in outdoor life an learned tuh bow hunt a grounhog you should wear all white clothes.the idea was tuh put a stalk on the grounhog out in a open field, with the sun at your back an the whiteness of the sun shining would blend in with white you had on.seemed tuh work as we snuck up to our preferred distance.an i took the first shot hitting the groun hog but we watched as it went back in its hole an deadhead did not git off a shot an he then run up an reached in the hole pulled out the snarling hog an heaved it bout 10 yds. away.it had busted one of muh arrahs gettin in the hole.deadhead immediatly nocks an arrah an lets one loose into the hog which was back in the hole but was lookin at us.the arrah went right thru the grounhogs mouth where deadhead later told me he was aimin for.he picked a spot.an put the arrah right there.now deadhead feared no animal an reaches in the hole an yanks it out an throws it on the groun.i ask deadhead if he knows anything bout field dressin it an he sez no an i say i dont know either .deadhead then sez we dont need tuh worry bout that though as his arrah had cut from the mouth an came out the other end, slicin its belly all the way down an it was purty obvious all we had tuh do tuh git the guts out.so we preceeded tuh take out the guts the same way we would a deer .of course we never field dressed a deer cause we never kilt one yet but read how tuh do it in outdoor life.we got the guts out an hurried tuh deadheads house to get it cooked an see how good our first grounhog would taste.after his mom cooked it an we ate it we both were satisfied tuh say it taste purty good.deadheads mom told us that we should try tuh kill younger grounhogs as they were much better eatin than the older ones an we decided tuh give that a try just tuh see if it was true.later on i would slay a very young grounhog but cant recollect if this taste thging was true but i know it was very easy tuh git a shot on it.so we came to the conclusion that younger animals were easier tuh kill.:mischeif:

gettin back tuh me an deadhead now perched up on limbs in separate trees an waitin for that 10 point buck tuh amble down the trail.now deadhead was in a tree bout 20 yds. from me at the most.an the wind was in our faces as we both faced the trail bout 30 yds out in front of us.an then we both heard it bout the same time, something was comin but we hadnt seen it yet.then it appeared still up the trail but walkin our way.the 10 point buck.both me an deadhead was shakin so hard an the trees were shaken as much as us.we even got laffin a lil just lookin at each other in those trees shakin like that but we kept the laffin muffled so not tuh spook that deer.we both said later we figured the deer would run from those trees shaken so much but it didnt.but what it did do though was take a lil detour off the trail an headed toward that tree it busted up before.before it got there it stops tuh look around givin me an deadhead a chance for a shot.well deadhead goes first loosin a arrah that seems tuh fall short at the deer at least 40 yds, away.well i know deadhead will fire off another an he does, right over its back.deadhead shoots his final arrahs with the same results as the 2nd shot.the deer is still standin there, now its my turn.my first shot looked good, perfect hit but i am still concerned bout all this shakin, deadheads tree is still shakin too.well i decide tuh let another go.an it too is a good hit.deer still there but has flip flopped an facin the other way an lookin on the groun.so i let another go with same results.the deer jumps an when it comes down my last arrah is out an on the way to the heart area.all are hits...i'm amazed the deer is still standin.well me an deadhead watch as this very strong 10 pointer proceeds on tuh tear thar tree up some more.an i decide i'm stayin up in the tree longer as this deer is really mad now.:mischeif:

the deer has left the area now.it was an opening in the woods with tall wheat lookin grass surrounded by a stand of pines with some oaks an hickories an other trees.
me an deadhead, figurin its safe now climb from our limb perches to the ground an walk over an with shakey voices an spurts of laffter we discuss the shakin.then deadhead sez his first shot looked good but he knew his others went over the back.i immediately respond though tellin him all his arrahs missed 3 over an one just under.but not tuh worry cause i believe all mine found the mark.deadhead than reponds in the shakey voice informin me yes indeed my shots went in xactly the same place.under the deer an in the weeds.but he added i just missed directly below the heart.i was as sure deadhead was wrong bout this as he thought i was bout him missin his first shot.so we go out tuh look for the evidence...an oh how we looked.we got tuh where we thought the deer was standin,an we found no blood,no srrahs no nothin...deadhead then sez i think it mighta been standin over there an i sed no i think it was more like over here.:nono: an it gets worse.but finally we start findin arrahs,an we did find the last one too an its hours later since we took the shots.no traces of blood anywhere.on arrahs ,groun or weeds.so we come to the conclusion that each other was right about the other missin 4 times.well we decide tuh inspect the tree the deer took its anger out on.tree now is tore tuh pcs with limbs scattered on the ground... me an deadhead look at the tree, the scattered limbs an at each other an decide we better be on the lookout just in case the the 10 point comes back for us.so thats it on our first shot(s) at a deer.:mischeif:NEXT... * THE ATTACK BY A 14 POINT BUCK*

me an the deadhead finally figured a couple things bout deer...it didnt mean that just cause big bucks busted up trees that they would do that to a person an we later realized the same thing bout stomps...but another thing we noted was that when we found these places, allwe had tuh do was set up on it an wait.chances were a deer would be by,an many times it was a big 10 point buck...xactly what we wanted.later in our readings about bowhuntin we would learn why these places attracted bucks an deer.me an deadhead were now learnin bout the rut.an soon we decided we needed some pete rickarts original indian bucklure.:mischeif:

*the attack of the 14 point buck*
i rode muh bike out early that nov.morn an it was really chilly.one thang bout usin a bike tuh git to your bowhuntin area ,yuh had tuh be careful not tuh git a limb tip in the spokes an this particular camoed bike had destroyed one of muh fisin poles in the spring while headed out for some bass fishin.so now i was very careful when transportin muh bow or fishin pole.poston was bout 2 miles from our house, not a bad ride on a bike.
on this cool sat. morn. frost was heavily on the groun.an as we usually did back then,i would be still hunt/stalkin. an i planed tuh hit the powerline an hoped tuh arrive before daylight an i did.as always i hid the camo bike, thats why we camoed them.it still was a good walk thru the woods on a loggin road before i got to where i wanted tuh be on the powerline,i was by muhself tuhday.well the powerline consists of a straight line of big hills an big gaps an yuh can see a long ways on it...an it was light enuff now tuh see good.an oh was it a sight what i seen.deer everywhere on the hill across the gap from me an lots of big bucks.an i decided tuh crawl closer an as i got to where i could see the side of the hill i was on i soon noticed some deer on this side too...some within 100 yds. from me.an i seen some big wide antlers too.an none knew a was even around.immediately i seen one of the closest was a nice 10 point buck an i decided tuh put a crouchin stalk on him as the weeds an bushes was tall nuff tuh hide me...but muh redwings were just makin too much noise so i sat an pulled em off.an went on in muh socked feet.an i got well within the preferred 30 yds. tuh draw on the deer an i did...but at the very moment something caught my attention movin up the other side of the hill.a giant buck with a bigger rack and points stickin out all over the place.my attention still on the big buck i let down the string.an i heard the deer close tuh me jump an snort.oh i thought i ruined it all an i froze.their were 56 sets of eyes all fixed on me.:nono: i remained frozen for awhile a bout 6 deer ran over to the other hillside with the rest, includin the one that snorted an they immediately turned their gaze back to me.i knew it couldnt been but 5 min. but it felt like an hour to me until the deer went on to what they were doin.some of the bucks were stompin the groun,a few were tearin up a tree.but the biggest one continued walkin up the hill.he was gittin away.:mischeif:

*the big buck*
deadhead an me would see this big antlered big bodied buck several times that season an so did a lot of other hunters.his antlers were the biggest in the woods but it was his body that made him really stand out.he was by far the biggest body wise in the forest.an around our community hunters just referred tuh him as the grey ghost.later we referred to him as the 14 point buck.even though we'd got purty close to him a few times we never got a shot.we were mainly stalkers back then an he always seen us before we seen him.our first indication of him being around was thudding hooves an a snort as he ran away, gone before we could even loose an arrow...vanishing before our eyes...

deadhead an me...froghunters...:mischeif: froghuntin first begun usin gigs an a light outta a canoe...an we got good at it...if memory serves me right we used a carbide light quite a bit...i know we used them when fishin at night...:) well after me an deadhead turned to the bow an arrah it was only a matter of time we turned tuh huntin the frog with a bow an arrah...an boy did we git good with 100% of our shootin frogs from the bank...most frogs were shot across chucks pond...the pond that is by the athens high school at the plains...we would shine a flashlight on the far bank of the pond...see the shiney eyes of a frog and bingo another big ole bullfrog in the burlap sack...an the pond was bout 30 yds. across...we very seldom missed a frog cause we loved eatin em...an back then you could kill as many as yuh wanted, anytime yuh could gitem...we always filled a bag up...an we cleaned em ,fried em an ate em that night...:) ...i can recall a shot i made on frog one night right between the eyes of THAT BULL frog...an it wasnt the first time i knocked their lights out...but deadhead was just as good at this,an possibly better as he showed me one night...i had called my shot that night(as i always did)but this time i knocked the lights out, perfectly in the center of the eyes, demolishing them...as we xamined the great shot on the frog deadhead wasnt all that impressed, after all it was just 30 yds...so on the next frog deadhead calls his shot and like mine he made a perfect shot but takin out only the right eye...which he predicted he would ...we sure could slay them frogs...which brings me to another story on frog huntin..."THE FROG MASSACRE AT POSTON LAKE...":D

me an deadhead decided one day tuh trek out tuh poston power plant back when the lakes as well as the plant were there...so we hop on our camo bikes with our bows for the 2 mile trip...all up hill goin out...well we got there, built a quick campsite tuh spend the night .bout time we were done we heard the bullfrogs callin...now we couldnt shoot across this lake cause it was bout 100 yds. across an 200 yds. long...so lot of it was stalkin an hopefully hopin for a across the water shot in the corners ,where we got lots of the frogs...this was our first time here an frogs were honkin everywhere...the place was very loud with frog noise...well we managed a few frogs in the daylight but boy when it got dark...it looked like headlights at the movie theater...lots of eyes shinin,everywhere...we didnt have enough arrahs for this...an we loosed all our arrahs as fast as we could stickin frogs to the bank...boy it was really dark up here at the lake high on top a hill...man me an deadhead hit the frog lottery...i dont recall a miss even though some did hop into the water before we got off a shot...some because they were on the same bank we had to stalk up very close for we got a shot...this was a real challenge...the small ponds were defineately easier with the shooting...but we still managed a good burlap bag amount of frogs...an we forgot the bag an had tuh use arrahs tuh skewer the frogs on...so now we even had fewer arrahs tuh shoot with...on this particular trip i seen deadhead make one of his best shots ever an better than i ever made too...knockin a leapin frog outta mid air as he jumped for the water...it wasnt so amazin he hit the frog but the fact he also thought so quickly to shoot the frog at just the right height from the water that his arrah after passin thru would stick into the bank of the dam instead of flying over it and to prolly be never be found...i never knew deadhead could think that quick an his grades in school wernt that good...well after shootin frogs til bout 2 am we decided tuh git back tuh the camp an get some sleep...we decided since we wernt goin home we would stick the arrahs with the frogs still skewered to them into the water, hopefully keepin them cool til we left for home after light...well after a good nights sleep ,me an the deadhead got our bows an headed down to the lake for our frogs...when we got to the edge of the lake we looked out into the water where the arrah nocks barely broke the surface...the lake was very clear an the bottom seemed to be movin...we both thought somethin was wrong with our eyes...well we quickly noticed all that was left on the arrahs were skeletons...and realized that the bottom was movin cause it was crawldads...thousands of em,maybe more...they ate up our frogs!!!bout that time we here a buuurrr rump...a big ole bullfrog...not wantin tuh go home empty we hurried an shot bout 5-10 frogs ...not much but somethang, hopped on our bikes an pedaled home...boy on that day we were really glad it was all downhill to home...we wernt happy campers...we had lost our frogs to those stupid crawldads...:( :(

frog eyes at 30 yds...(we called them headlights)...0r we shot the lights out...this is what we aimed for, remember in trad. shooting you shoot for somethang small within your whole target...it was the same teaching back then...and is still true today...pick a hair on a deer in the kill zone...concentrate on that single hair...miss it but not by far, youre in the kill!!!as said earlier 30yds. back then was like 20yds. is for most today...for us that was close...we shot many targets at 40 - 50 yds...you didnt have any ethical police back then,no animal rights ...everybuddy was a hunter, the few that wernt respected the hunter...he brought home the meat or furs for xtra money for xmas...i dont believe either of us ever got a deer in the 60s...i know i didnt but we had golden oppurtunities...but we were rookies and buck fever did its toll...i do know one groundhog was kilt at better than 50 yds...i actually dont recall which made that shot but i think it was me...we prolly kilt less than 5 groundhogs...we hunted fox but never got a shot...i believe deadhead shot a coon or 2 out of a tree while coon hunting...but when it came to frogs we were the best there was...some others did it too ,following our lead but wasnt near the great frog hunters we were...if anybuddy knows the pond near athens high school, actually on their grounds...this was the killing grounds of 99% of our frog hunting...and we shot frogs on the opposite bank without hardly a miss...we used to say to the frogs ..."you may as well just give up and hop in the sack"...:bouncy:

i agree now thats my definition of a grub belly...:mischeif: and for those who have never carped...thats how easy it is...especially close shots and a lot of carp...i used to do the close shots but later started passing the gimmees and going only for the biggies that always seemed on the opposite bank of the river...longer shots were lots more fun for me...sorta like shootin those frogs...opposite bank...when i was shootin carp in alum creek bout 15-20 years ago i hardly ever missed one...i had only 2 recurve bows,2 oneida eagles, and a hoyt pro vantage and a wood handled browning compound...carp were purty easy but i also kilt a deer each year too...so the carp shooting must have been great practice and confidence builder...:D

it really bothered us when we lost the frogs to the crawdads...
when word got out we were frog hunting, people stayed up late and kept calling our houses to see if we were in yet...whether we were gigging or shooting them with our bows...of course when we were hunting frogs with the bows it really got people xcited...they knew me and deadhead would have a lot of frogs to satisfy everybuddies bellies...and on the night we went to poston, all knew we were there all night and everybuddy gathered at another buddies house the next morning, waiting for us to bring home the frogs...we predicted this would be the biggest frog eating feast ever...and xpected a real big turn out...we never disappointed them before...so when the crawdads ate our frogs,we were devastated because we let everybuddy down...we tried to get more frogs in the morning light before going home but it was much harder than at night when we shot at glaring bright eyes...we were hurrying and missed more than ever...we set a record on frog misses...we were lucky if we had a dozen when we slowly got to our bikes, slowly pedaling home...it was a long hard trip back home, and it was all downhill...there wasnt even enough frogs for just one person...we were finished...we failed all that counted on us bringing back a bunch of frogs...there would be no party...no slaps on the back, everybuddy, girls ,guys, mothers, fathers ears always listened to our recounts of great shots...but no more being heros now...we'd prolly be outcasts...how could this have happened,we were ashamed to go home...as we got near the house,we both had tears in our eyes...we ruined it all...we could hear everybuddy being cheerful, having a good time, waiting to eat frog legs...maybe we should just turn back and not show up...to that date this had to be the worst day of my life and i knew deadhead felt as bad...:( :nono:
