Hunting with a 38 cal. pistol

A friend and I were discussing hunting with pistols. I could have sworn that there was a time you could use a 38 cal pistol to hunt deer. I know the current law is a 357 or bigger. Can anyone back me up on this?:confused:

I killed my first buck back in 1990 with a 357 mag. that's been the minimum caliber since then I know.

i shot one this year with my smith and wesson 500 is that big enough lol:D
