View Full Version : 17HMR: Coyote medicine beyond shotgun range?

Someone said that they bought a 17HMR for coyote the other day. Though I feel it is a great cartridge for many intended uses; I'm uncertain whether it should be used on eastern coyotes beyond shotgun range (50yds). I've shot 'em at targets, never with fur in my scope. :(
So what do you think?

I've never shot this cartridge on paper or fur, but I think the 17HMR is a bit light for 'yotes. If I was going after 'em, I'd go with a .223 Remington at minimum. A bigger hit for a cleaner kill.
I'm no expert, just expressing my humble opinion.

I am a .17 cal. fan. I have 3 of them, a .17 AH. , a .17 Rem. and a .17-223. I would have no problem trying a coyote with any of my .17`s, but the smalleat, the .17 AH, is pushing a 19 grn Calhoon bullet at 3,600 fps. and shoots flat to about 300 yrds. The .17 HMR shoots a 17 grn. bullet at 2,550. A single number 4 buck from a shotgun would have more stopping powder than the .17 HMR bullet with the same placement.

Catfish gave you a good answer. There just isn't enough power there at longer ranges, say 50 yards. The .17 Rem. however, has proven to be a great coyote gun. It's a much hotter cartridge than the HMR, and does minimal fur damage.

I, myself, am a small caliber fan & wouldn't hesitate to use a 17 cal' centerfire on coyote, & would use the 17HMR at close range. It wouldn't be my weapon of choice. Personally I like the #4 buck idea in a 3 1/2" 12 ga. Hoooo baby, rocks my world. :D
I guess my problem w/ the 17HMR is the bullet, to light & very explosive. I'm afraid that it won't have the penetration for an effective kill down range. Now CCI has a 17 grain TNT bullet on their 17HMR load. Plinky, my huntin' buddy, has used them on g'hog & said that they are even more devastating. He likes them better than the V-Max.
Please don't think that I'm against the 17HMR. I think that it is a great cartridge who's time has come considering all the urban sprall. :( I definitely will have one some day I just won't use it on coyote.

I completely agree with what vvarmitr posted. I don't feel the 17 HMR has enough punch for consistently taking coyotes. My 17 Mavh IV does a nice job though!!!!

I'm going to "KILL ONE" of those O'YOTS with my 17 hmr in Taurus
wheel gun. Just like my primitive bow gear (flint and wood) i get real close. So when the canine breath is blowing in my face i'll drop him hard!!! sooner or later. Pray for me James , so I return safe and in "one piece" jcdflint

jcdflint.....LOL,LOL, & LOL.:D :D :D
Are you sure it'll be the HMR or your breath that puts him down?:D
One thing for sure, if anyone can do it, it'll be you.

Yotes can be plenty big around here as well, a friend of mine posted a pic of one that was taken here in Central Ohio a week or so back and I think it was right at 60lbs(Male) I would prefer something at least in the 222 or 223 range simply because I dont want to have one of those brutes out there 200-250 yds and worry that I dont have enough gun, or worry that unless I

Sorry guys my fingers are wondering around the keypad to much, but anyway what I was going to say was worry that unless I do this just perfect I will only wound this animal and not put it down cleanly, I like the 17 cals to..just not that particular caliber at that range with that kinda game.

Yeah, Smallie34, we heard about those fingers back in your dating days. :D :D
I think a 50 yd & under gun should be a shotgun or maybe a pistol though some pistols shoot well pass 50yds.
I hate to wound an animal too! :( :o I guess that is my concern about using the 17HMR.
Now what I need to do is get the 17AH barrel on Coyote Kate's rifle & getsome reloading data off of Catfish.(what a name for a varmint hunter  )

Im not the best shot in the world..so I cant make those pinpoint accurate shots everytime..you would have to hit even a average yote solid to drop it with the 17HMR, with that said I might come into a Win Coyote in 243 in the near future, anyone have any experience with this rifle? my wondering fingers became famous in my pre-date years if you know what I mean:D ;)

About that Win. Coyote rifle. IMHO I think that is the best designed varmint rifle stocks out there for a walk-about/bench rifle. Not to heavy & not to light. I've not owned one(yet), but I've given it some serious thought! Now if Savage put a stock on one of theirs like that, Hoo baby! :D I kinda think that the Coyote model was a rebuttal to the Remington Sendero. That Coyote in 243 would be real close to being the all around rifle.
About those fingers; did you mean infamous rather than famous. LOL :D
