View Full Version : 38 Cal. pistols
Does anyone remember a time that you could use a 38 to hunt deer with. I know the current laws say 357 and bigger. I could have sworn a 38 was legal back in the late 90's. A friend and I have a bet on this.

I thought a .38 and .357. are the same size ,are they talking about bullet size or am I missing some thing, all my .38's and .357 are .357 dia
But isn't there a big difference in velocity a .38 special and a .357 mag?

.38+p is probably close I don't have my charts . I just wonder what they are talking about I can reload to what ever shoots the best group out a particular gun not necessarily the hottest . as far as I am concerned they could raise it to .500

A scan of the regs just says that the handgun barrel must be 5" or more and that it must fire a straight walled cartridge .357 caliber or larger. No mention of action, ammo capacity, or magnum loads. Since all parts of 38 Special cartridge meet the minimum stated I'm gonna assume that it's a legal round, even if it's not the best tool for the job...Anybody with a better insight, please chime in, I'd love to know for sure.
