If you ran the DNR, how many deer would you let us kill each year in the three zones?
Would you ever like to see a two buck bag limit?
Should button bucks and shed bucks count as your buck for the year if you haven’t already filled your buck tag?

Personally in any zone that allows the harvest of more than one deer a year, I would go to an earn a buck program. You couldnt harvest a buck until you took a doe. This would do more to control numbers then most people realize.
I would be opposed to a two buck bag limit, I woudl rather see an extra doe killed then a second buck, especially since killing a doe has more of an effect on herd numbers then does a buck.
I would consider allowing rifles in some parts of the state that are more forested.
Button bucks and shed bucks shoudl never count against your buck harvest, becuase you shouldnt be penalized for shooting soemthing that can be diificult to determine sex on at times.

I agree with OHBOW76 on all counts except the rifles. It's not a safety issue, but rather a quality buck issue. I feel the reason we have as many big bucks as we do is because of the weapons we use. Prior to the 1990's very few people would harvest a buck at greater than 50-75 yards. Even now with the advent of rifled slug barrels, muzzleloaders, and the new loads that are developed it's basically a 100 yard game. Opening it up to rifles effectively puts a 200-250 yard range as more the norm. Do we have deer killed at 250 yards today, absolutely, but think back on your average shot distance and I think better than 90% of us would be under 100 yards. Sounds like a good survey question;)

I'm not qualified to answer this question...I don't have a degree in Wildlife Biology. I'll let the DNR answer that.

i think rifles would be a terrible thing to allow. just think of all the idiots who would be taking 300 yard hail mary shots and the number of deer that would be wounded. i can see taking more does, but two bucks is not a good idea. people in my area already slaughter the young bucks the way it is.

Just a few thoughts on rifles....
1) Only allow it in certain parts of the state
2) Even though rifles are allowed in PA I would say MOST deer are still shot within 150 yds.
3) Rifles arent going to up the hail mary shots, hell they are already being taken. I hear plenty of shotgun barrages, and run into plenty of guys using open sighted shotguns and taking 100 yd shots..
4) It wont change the harvest figures one bit.

if rifles wont change the figures one bit then why use them? shooting deer with rifles is not even a challenge or very sporty

i agree with you OHBOW, just think those hail mary's will get alot more dangerous, and people taking 300-400 yard shots on standing deer that are not proficient at those ranges will poorly wound deer or send bullets flying and skinpping all over the place. im not too worried about it because in west/northwest ohio it is too flat that they will never allow rifles or at least i hope not , people will lock themselves in their basements for the week.

If you or someone you know is not going to eat it, don't kill it!
I must admit if I was to see a monster trophy buck I would take him if I could only because I have yet to get my trophy buck. But, I will make certain that either I eat him, a family member, a friend, donate the meat to charity, or something. I don't beleive in just killing deer to be killing deer. I love hunting and I know killing is the whole point of it, but I myself have let many a deer have a pass.

i dont know where you would hunt in "forested areas"...even in muh beloved wayne around nelsonville its a big place but i would not think big enough for 30-06's...there are just too many houses within the forest...and roads with vehicular traffic...its a safety issue here, the guns max. range is too much...safety first...besides,in the thick woods todays shotguns and muzzleloaders are quite enough...we simply do not have the large un inhabitated areas of texas or the western states...ohio is very populated even in rural areas compared to those states...
