What does everyone use for tick and mosquito repellent while turkey hunting? What products work for you? I hate it when I clean out a spot by a tree to set up and have the mosquitoes pester me while I try to remain still:mad:. They love me, I must taste good to them! As far as ticks go I have found them on my neck and head from time to time after a hunt. So let's hear from you, what works for you?

I hose my clothes down with permanone and then spray OFF or Repel on top.
The mosquitos are un-real down here in SC this year. The bug spray keeps them off you, but they still swarm around.
I've got a thermacell that I'm going to try next time I go deer or hog hunting.

Thunderflight has it right. Here in Georgia the ticks, mosquitos, and anything else that crawls and bites is bad. I do the same thing with the permanone, and carry a can of deep woods off with me. The southerner definitely have a handle on bug control.

George,
those fire ants are nasty and yes they are everywhere. You definitely take care not to step on any big red mounds of dirt/clay. They will eat you alive, and its extremely painful. You guys in the north who have never been stung by a bunch of fire ants don't know what your miss'n.

Hey shrivl, I lived in Louisiana for 6 years and I know what you mean about them fire ants. One time I was fishing from the bank and sit right on an ant hill in shorts pants. They attacked all my most delicate and sensitive areas. I had bumps for weeks.
shrivl
04-14-2003, 07:22 PM
Yeah I know that. I was running the weed eater my first year down here and accidentally disturbed one. Before I knew it i had them in my pants. Man I could not get them pants off fast enough. I was in the front yard and the people across the street knew exactly what had happen. Those suckers will track you donw as well, they smell you out. I know here in Georiga they are always talking about the mosquitos carrying West Niles. Even report several older folks dying from that. You guys heard anything about the mosquitos in the North carrying West Niles?

they set me afire, that for sure
shrivl, we've had plenty of West Nile. In Ohio theres been a few human deaths, usually older folks, and lots of horses come down with it. I even found a couple of dead hawks that probably died from it.
I spent summers in Griffin, Ga as a kid, you sure don't what to use those mounds for bike jumps..

While in Texas last weekend, three of us got a tick on us down there!! Mine was between my nose and left eye of all places!! We all used the proper sprays but they still got on us!! Here in NY thatnk god we don't have to worry about those ticks and fire ants, just the skeets!!

Fire ants should be called satan ants.... I hate the busturds...
One night I stepped on a fire ant hill wearing sandals.....
Both of my feet swelled up and I could barely stand on them for more than a few minutes....:(
Every time I find a new hill in my yard I poision it. You have to be aggressive cause they'll multiply fast.

yeah fire ants I beleive were one of satan's creations. You know thought I can put up with the tick, mosquitos, and fire ants, but the thing that bothers me the most is the snakes down here. Growing up in Ohio I never saw a rattlesnake, copperhead or any other posionious snake. Down here I am always thinking about it as I walk through the woods in the dark. I do wear snake boots turkey hunting and in bos season. Also those dang little black scorpions are a pain too. I miss being able to stumble through the woods in the dark and not having to worry about were I walk or sit. The south is fun to hunt, but you have to be tolerante of the bugs and snakes that for sure.

04-15-2003, 01:13 PM
Snakes...... We've got snakes.....
I will not go in the woods with out my snake boots on.... This year they are really bad. I think it's because of the high water.
We don't have any scorpions though....Thank God...:)

yeah at least I know king snakes will eat the poisionious snakes. Some hawks and falcons will eat them as well. They told me skunks and possums and some birds will eat them scorpions. So I guess they serve some purpose in the food chain. But I have yet to know of any critter that will eat them fire ants. I'd like to met the fools who were responsible for them being imported from South America.
went to TN last weekend and in 2 days of hunting i found 26 yes i said 26 ticks on me. they did not have the bitter cold that we did.

the ticks that I find on me after hunting don't bother me, its the one I dont find that scares me. Man if I find one, that night I toss and turn, everything feels like a tick crawling on me.

I use Deep woods Off when I'm hunting. But I lived in Ga. and got fire ants on me and I thought I was on fire. Very nasty bites. But in the winter I used the mounds from fire ants to sift over traps. The dirt from there mounds don't freeze. Sure saves you on anti-freeze chemicals.

George,
I think that is why some of the guys in our club won't hunt from the ground. The little monsters got into my boots this morning and torn my ankles up. Made the mistake of standing on a little one in the dirt road while owl hooting this morning.

Just looking at some of the cartoons nowadays. people have to be a bit warped at times to think up some of this stuff.
shrivl
04-24-2003, 11:00 PM
hmmm, probably got a few cartoonist among us. Does carrying a lighter around to burn those little suckers to death constitute a warped mind. If so maybe I need to sharpen my drawing skills.
lureboy98
04-25-2003, 12:28 AM
shrivl, I heard that carrying a lighter makes them throw up when they back out and when they throw up that is what spreads the diseases they are carrying. Maybe you should replace that lighter with a pair of tweezers, it doesn't hurt to pull them off and its a lot safer.
archer077
04-25-2003, 12:32 AM
yeah but with a lighter you can make them go pop if you find them crawling around cannot remember the number ive done when i was in georgia

My buddy said he would never marry a women if she did not have a good lookin mother. Was afraid if he married one with an ugly mother that she might get old and look like her mother. I kinda followed his advice. Guess maybe thats why we are both 32 and never married. Or maybe its we spend to much time chasin turkeys, deer and fish..aint enough time to do it all ya know.
