View Full Version : Any striper/wiper fishmen?

Do any of you fish for striper/wiper or would like to try your hand at it? If you do, where do you normally fish? I started getting into it a couple years ago on the Ohio river after I moved to Cincinnati. Man it sure is addictive. If you never have, but would like to try your hand at it, I might be able to help if you're game for a trip to the mighty Ohio for a day sometime between April and July. Not that I don't go after that (I usually go until October), it's just a bit more sporadic after the run in the Spring.

Not quite that big. 30 lbs is the biggest I've heard down here so far.

Even though they are from the same family, you can tell a salt water wiper since they are bigger than the fresh. I have on occasion fished for them below the dams, when you hook into a good sized Ohio River wiper, you definitely know it. :)

30 #'s aint bad though. I agree salt or freshwater, if you get hooked onto a good striper , you know its a good one. some of the best eating too but thats just a bonus . The Ohio sure has cleaned up though, I remember the late 60's and early 70's when it was downright pathetic.
ours are actually Rockfish, aren't the ones in the river a hybrid between a rockfish and white bass ?
oxmos
01-20-2007, 02:10 PM
A good many of the ones I catch are hybrids. A big hybrid is around 10-12lbs, with the biggest I've seen personally weighing in at 17lbs. There are always a few true rockfish to be caught though. Caught two last year, one was 16lbs, the other 22. They sure are a blast to catch.

Not bad if you cut the line of red meat out that runs down the center of the filet. If you leave it in, it's really strong tasting.

I caught one on the St. Joseph River in Michigan a few years back while Salmon/Steelhead fishing. Weighed about 10-12lbs. We steaked it out and smoked it with the salmon, it was some of the best smoked fish we ever had.

Yeah Steve, it follows right along the lateral line. There will also be lateral bones in that strip.
Uglykat26, They do give a good fight and you may very well be catching them on livers. It wouldn't be the first time I've heard of them hitting on livers.
Here's an 8lb hybrid (wiper) for an idea of what they look like.

:banghead3: that is the fish so it is a hybrid cool . we didnt catch just a few alot were 8 and 9 pounds we caught over a hundred ( no lie god strike me dead if it wasnt true) in 12 hours of fishing and 15 pounds of chicken liver later the spot i caught them no longer allows people to fish it cause of a death down there but you can still get to it from a boat i did have one snap my 8 foot musky rod though

I don't doubt you a bit about the amount you caught. When they're hitting, that's all they do. It's a feeding franzy. As soon as the bait hits the water you have a fish on, and that lasts for however long they're hitting. They hit like a freight train too. No need to set the hook, just hold on. Sounds like you found a great spot, too bad it's closed now.

They have Wipers in KISER LAKE in Champaign County as well, and last I read in Ohio Outdoor News they were socking it with pure strain Stripers and will be utilizing the lake as ODNR's source for reproduction Stock. I personally have never caught one, but my buddy use to do real well catching them at KISER simply by fancasting crankbaits from shore. The largets stringer I ever saw him catch at one time was 4 fish with each between 9-12 lbs. He too told me that they tasted great as long as you removed the mudline from them, if not it made the fish very strong tasting.

I only fished the ohio river twice and that was 4 years ago, once from the bank a catfish almost pulled my rod into the water, the second time from a friends white boat, anything that touched the water was not white when we took it out, the water was scummy, looked and smelled bad...
Don't know if I would want to eat anything that comes out of that river, I am talking about East Liverpool area have been told it is not recommended to eat anything that comes from the Ohio due to the pollution..
I talked to a man at berlin lake the other day and he says he catches saugeye and eats them all the time from the ohio, of course at age 64 he has several medical problems.....
maybe the river is cleaner down stream near cincinnati...any info on this??? some say the Ohio is cleaner then Berlin lake???? I find that hard to believe, but maybe it is....

Have fished and worked on the river for 30 years. The pollution has dropped a lot since I started working there.
Last year a while fishing at Pike Island dam near Wheeling,WV(north) a WV game officer stopped us and surveyed us about our fishing. He gave us papers showing that the amount of fish that should be eaten out of the Ohio river is greater than the amount of fish from Lake Erie over a month time.
I still would be mindful of keeping fish taken near the discharges of the local steel mills.

I know the Coon like the back of my hand, thru the years I probably fished that lake 1000 times. Did you know it used to be full of standing timber back in the old days, it used to be the best spot for a big bass until the state killed all the aquatic vegetation in it by loading it with grass carp. Right before you turn into the ramp on the left, there is a line of houses and the last one is where my old buddy Ed lived there until his death a few years ago, he was the master of that lake. Sure do miss him and the lake.

We were fishing on of the creek entrances this morning, sunday, about 5 miles above the Pike Island Dam pool and my buddy got a
25 1/2" stripper on a top water popper. How long do you think it took for me to break one of mine out, but I did not even get a hit.
When it hit it sounded like someone threw a brick off the train bridge.
He added a small white bass to his total, when we were trolling back up the creek to the launch ramp.
