Ohio hunters took 111,672 white-tailed deer during the state’s popular, weeklong deer-gun season, which ran November 27 to December 3, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. In 2005, hunters killed a preliminary total of 116,855 deer during the same time period.

Statewide down about 4.5%, some big counties down 20-30%.

The total including archery, youth, early ML and gun is down about 900. Not much, less then 1%, still a suprise.

The extra 2 days of gun will make up that difference.

A lot of guys in this area were not shooting at does all week, the plan was buck hunt all week. Then the second season everyone will take their does to fill out the tags. So I would expect a real big weekend hunt coming up.

Its not surprizing that the numbers are down, its because there is less deer.

You don't quit (or learn), do you? Some day you'll grow up and realize that you can't always blame your problems on others. Sometimes you have to look in the mirror.

Ashtabula County was up. Three deer were taken off our farm this year. On Saturday, my husband shot a doe late in the afternoon. By the time he walked back to the house to get the tractor it was dark. When he returned to the field to pick up his deer, there were 8 more deer standing there grazing in the corn stubble. No shortage of deer here.

We've had past seasons when we would hardly see a deer on our place. Most of the time, it could be explained by food sources changing. Sometimes they call our farm home. Sometimes it is the neighbor across the road or even down the way.

I find it suprising because locally (Mahoning & Columbiana Counties) the herd seems to be up.

Well M. Magis since your so faithful to the DNR then maybe you should listen to them. Even they wrote that the the deer population this year is lower then it was last year. Im sure your convinced now since you believe everything they say. Hopefully someday you will get over yourself. I doubt it though. And the only problems I have on here is with people who think they know it all.

Your always good for a laugh. :p Good thing everybody doesn't think like you. We'd all be living in bunkers waiting for the sky to fall, while looking for someone else to blame.

Ohio better watch out and not do what the dumbasses did in PA and slaughter the deer population and no w they are paying the price in alot of areas in PA. Estimating the deer population in a state is impossible. The numbers are always way off. Just my opinion boys and girls...

Still plenty of deer left in our area. I saw 4 bucks chasing a doe this week up around Cadiz off of SR 250. Just checked my trail cam this morning and I have several bucks still going since gun season. Unfortunately the big boys were poached earlier but I have a few more that are still available to be poached next year I guess. Still several doe groups. Plenty of shooting in our area in gun season, but they don't seem to have killed a whole lot.

Good luck next weekend and during primitive weapons season.
