I'm wanting to replace our old tiller with a rear tine this year. What's everyone recommend? I've looked at a few Troybilt's but not real sure of what to buy yet.......Anyone got some insight on this subject?

I've been gardening all my life and have had numerous roto-tillers, mostly in the old days they were all front tined. I purchased a Troy Built 2 years ago and never knew what I was missing. The ease of operation is un-equaled along with reliability and for a modest cost. I don't think you can go wrong with one, but that is just my opinion. :)

Well I just sold 20 year old troy built horse and have one I kept. I used to till gardens for hunting money every spring. I probably tilled hundreds gardens. The older Troy bilt horse models are the best. Troy-bilt is now owned by MTD; I GARENTEE they will cheapen them up. I know, I work for MTD.
Id take a close look at newer models see what has changed.
Also those Troy-bilt commercials are deceiving, there is huge difference tilling well-tilled topsoil vs hard unbroken earth. Once soil is well worked yes you can till with one hand.
The trick to get that topsoil consistency many gardeners look for is WORK and time and proper soil moisture.
Given the proper soil moister I would till soil repeatedly in the spring until you get desired consistency. Then every fall till in your leftover garden then till again in the spring. Tilling in amendments works great too.
I have successfully planted a few food plots too.hehe

I looked at the Troybilts and think they already cheapened them. The older one's my friends have are built rock solid. The new ones are angle iron fromes and not all the strong looking anymore. I bought the BCS 730 with the Kohler 8.5 Hp and a 26" tiiller and a 36" dozer blade.

Aimrite, I have to laugh every time I see that Troy Built commercial. It looks like they added 50% sand to that garden. What M.T.D. plant do you work at? I've developed some packaging for them the last few years. I've built plastic trays for a lawn mower transaxle, and for the axle off of the Bronco tiller. We've done some others, but those are the ones I've developed myself. They were for the plant in Lietchfield, KY.

I'm putting my old tiller a 5hp MTD front tine in our garage sale soon for $75. If your interested come take a look. I live in Delaware, Ohio so we are pretty close. If its a new garden you will probably have to spade it up a bit first. It runs great and I'd rather sell it to someone sports minded.

wow,
i can't believe troybilt would sell out to mtd. my father had one and i have had my troybilt horse for close to fifteen years. i would have like to have gotten a new big red but i think i'll just keep my old red. before i heard this news i would have suggested one to anyone who gardens. as for the commercials,
if you add organics and follow there suggestions your soil will be like the soil on t.v. if you can find an older version it will be worth the investment, as a two time owner i will promise your satisfaction.
