This is my father-in-laws Piebald 6 pt he shot Sunday afternoon in Tusc. county. He saw it running the ridge back and forth along the ridge about every 20 minutes so he moved up into the line it had been running and ended up in exactly the right spot. He shot it from the ground at about 10 yards. Unfortunately he clipped a twig that he didn't see and the arrow veered off and caught it in the stomach, needless to say he was just sick about it. After a pretty awesome trailing job he managed to recover the deer and was off the hook happy when he finally closed the deal! He's going to get a full body mount done of the deer.

Cool deer, I definately would have moved in on him too no matter the size of his rack, good thing those white ones aren't off limits in OH like they are in some states.

I'm hunting the Alum Creek controlled hunt this year.

I've had two hunters, and a photographer tell me they have seen an all white doe in there!

I'd like a chance to see her, but would have mixed emotions on a chance to shoot her!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Sweet deal!! That's cool. Congrats to your Dad!!:D

Maybe if you have a minute, we could all learn from what your Dad did RIGHT in the tracking job to recover a gut shot deer.
It can be a hard deal and I'm sure we could all pick up a thing or two.

Congrats again to your Dad.

Thanks for all the great words! :bouncy:

As far as the tracking goes, it was pure persistance. When he shot the deer it went right down after about 20 yards. After a few minutes it got up and ran. He waited about an hour before going after it and had a good blood trail at first. He used little peices of toilet paper stuck in twigs every so often to mark the trail. After about 150 yards he decided the deer was going to go for awhile so he called it quits to give it a over-night to settle knowing the general direction it was heading. When he pulled in and parked the quad in the morning he looked down when got off and not 5 ft away was the blood trail! From that point the trail was pretty good for about 100 yards but after that it got dicey tracking basically became on hands and knees down the hillside using the TP any place he would find a blood trail, a flock of turkeys also had gone through after the deer in one area and he was still able to keep the trail. Once he got to the bottom of the valley the deer started up the hill and it was all gravy from there. It was like a fountain turned on and he found the deer further up the hill. The whole adventure cover about a 1/2 mile and 5 hrs of tracking. The fun part was when he found the deer it was leaning against a brush pile and looked like it was still alive, he had to stand and watch it for abit before he knew for sure. :D

Thanks Lance!!
That right there is a guy who was determined to find his deer. I love it!!!

MANY people have lost deer by trying to track it too soon. Waiting that hour can be the longest hour of your life, but ya' gotta do it. And waiting 4 hours, or overnight, on gut shots can be REALLY long. But the results speak for themselves.
Congrats again to your Dad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool deer, congratulations to your FIL.

I had one of those in the backyard for a couple of years, first year I watched him as a button, next year, he was a spike. Haven't seen him for over a year now. He actually looks like a mutant, 70% white, and looks like a goat. He has extremely short legs, actually shorter than the yearlings. I think he would have had to get up on a stump to breed a doe.
