They do any smelt dipping here in Ohio. Moved from Michigan a few years ago and haven't heard of them doing it down here off Lake Erie.

I've been watching for places to do that also. I've found where people fish for them with bait but nothing for using good ol' dipnets. :(

I use a dipnet for them up at Edgewater park. Lot easier than fishing for them. I have'nt been up for a while but it is a good spot for them.

Excellent! What type of dipnet do you use? The long handled basket type or more af a square type that you toss and pull up?

I use the square kind tied to the end of a 10 foot tube. That way I can drop and pull it up or sweep it through the water. I usually end up catching more sweeping it through the water, though it wears your arms out pretty quick as you have to keep it moving fast so the can't swim away.

What constitutes a good days netting?

I got a couple hundred in about an hour the last time I went up. If they are in heavy you can fill a five gallon bucket in that much time, but that is a heck of a lot of cleaning.

Thanks a bunch! I guess I need to get myself a new net for next spring.
