Hi! We just moved to Ohio 3 years ago from PA, and am a bit confused by one of Ohio's hunting laws.

The Tenants hunting law. It states that if we reside on the land and the majority of our income comes from agricultural production on that land we don't have to buy a hunting liscense. Ok that all makes sense to me, but my question is how do the tags work for something like this? and do the check in stations give you a hard time about this type of tag? We live on a farm and all of our income is from the farm, so we have that part covered, I am just confused as to how tagging and check in works with this. I called our local game warden, but he wasn't much help. He acted as though it was a stupid question and answered me with what I had already read in the book rather than answering my specific question about how to tag and check in.

Can anyone explain this to me. I want to make sure I am doing things legally.

Thanks

You simply attach a piece of paper to the carcass. On the paper you write all the required info, date of kill, time, ect.

You take the animal to the check station and they will remove your temp. tag and replace it with a permanent metal band. It is that simple.

Good luck, hopefully by the end of the season you will have done it enough to be comfortable doing it.:D

Essentially, being the tenant of the land and deriving your income from the land, they are granting you "landowner status" for hunting priveleges. For a tag, simply cut out a small piece of cardboard and write your name and address on it. When you shoot a deer on your rented land, simply write the date and time of kill on the tag and take it to any Ohio check station. Just simply tell the check station that you are checking it in under a landowner tag. The rest of the process is similar to checking a deer in under a purchased license. They will permanently tag the deer for you and take your landowner tag with the form you fill out there. That is pretty much it. If the game warden would approach you on your rented land, you may have to prove your tenant status and they do have the right to follow up on landowner tags to see if the deer was actually killed on the landowners property, but that is rare and only happens when something is suspicious.

I'm fairly certain that you would tag it like any land owner. I've never seen anything that would suggest otherwise.

Whoops, MagnumMudMan beat me to it.

A few years back the farmer (leasee) decided to hunt deer with us on opening day. He lived on another farm but also operated (leased) this 250 acre or so farm. The Game Warden showed up and before he left he issued the farmer a citation for hunting without a license. The farm bureau stepped up in court for him and charges were dismissed he did have to go to court though for the afternoon and has never hunted since. I have a photo of the officer and him that still hangs on our Wall of Fame in the garage. It was issued because he lived on a different farm.

Thanks Weekender! That's nice to know, because we have several farms besides the one we live on that we farm. I will be sure to keep that in mind. Thanks.
