View Full Version : blackbird hunting?
I was wondering if there is a blackbird season in ohio?
If so is there any special requirements like type of weapon
times, etc.
Do I need a hunting license to shoot them?
Thanks for any info.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure they're protected. I think the only birds not protected are the house sparrow, pigeon, and the starling. All other birds are protected under federal law.

A black bird is protected?? They get in my garden and I just take them out . Also my son keeps them out with the .22. Guess I need to look into this.
My son wants to use them for target practice, he said there was
a law where you could hunt them on weekends? maybe it was crows, I can't seem to find any info on it. Looks like he will just have to stick to the clay type:) Thanks

The weekend season is for crows. Fri., Sat., & Sun. Check with the ODNR, but I am certain blackbirds are protected, as is almost every other bird. Don't get me wrong, I grew up shooting blackbirds in the yard and at the local farm ponds. I just don't want anybody to get in to trouble.

Crows are in their closed season as of today. There is a closed season on crows for breeding. This yera it is from March 23 to June 13, so you can shoot crows from now till June 13th.

As much as all of us have mostlikley grown up shooting black birds it is aganst the law to shoot the red -winged black bird because it is prtected unde the song bird act. but as far as starlings and greckles I don't believe thay are. Also it can be fun to hunt crows some times. They can bejust as hard to hunt as any other animal or bird. You need to scout and work on a set up and everything. I have herd of people that do eat the crows they shoot and there is even a web sight to this it is called crowbusters.com. They have recipies and every thing.
