I have a comment and a few questions for you all.

First, It didn't seem like there was much to any movement of deer on opening day. Very little compared to what I scouted a few weeks ago. Now I am going to attribute that to the wind and weather. Did you guys pretty much find the same as me and blame it on the weather?

Secondly, what is the typical pattern (over the years) you have found for daily deer movement in October? Deer in generaly, not just bucks. What I mean is
1) When do they leave the fields/clearings in the morning and where do they go (to beds or browsing acorns through the woods?)
2) Do they stay in their beds all day or are they up moving around periodically in the woods?
3) When do they become active where do they go and what time do you see them again in the fields?

What I have seen in my hunting areas is 1) out in the fields early but in the woods within 20 minutes or less of sunrise. 2) They go straight to beds and move very little to none during the daylight and 3) They are on their feet about 30 minutes before sunset and usually head for water first and to the fields just as shooting light is getting over.

The reason I ask is that I'm hunting mostly semi-heavily pressured public lands and am wondering if this pattern is typical for whitetails or if it is just because they are pressured in my areas.

its purty much business as usual...things just heat up as the rut gets closer and as the rut starts to die down so does movement...of course gun season really brings things to an all time low...

The deer I hunt have no pressure and I found most of the movement yesterday night was at 6:30pm. saw does and passed on a 130" buck 10 yards from my stand. Saw 3 other bucks one being a shooter in the 140" class. The rut and colder weather seem to move the deer a little more. We'll see come the first few weeks in Nov.

in archery season i feel deer are less pressured where i hunt than many farms, mainly because of the size and less open places like patures...most of the wayne is rough and full of vegatation and trees...its lots easier to over hunt a farm than the big woods...the deer has all that cover, they dont have to go very far and prolly wont go anywhere...they'll just be more cautious...and the big woods deer are harder to pattern...they have a million feeding areas...where as on farms you have green pastures or other crops...or plots...and this is where the deer go or end up at almost every time...thats my biggest problem on the wayne...figuring where deer will feed...and quite honestly i usually do not even try to figure that one out anymore...i look for trails and areas with lots of rubs,scrapes...i know doe dont do that...i dont xpect to see a deer everytime i go out,i know i'll get skunked now and then...if a deer doesnt come within 30 or 40 yards this time of year, chances are i will not see it...but on a farm near a big pasture i'll see deer almost every night, some 300 yards away...but as the rut draws near, and the woods clear out more as leaves fall...i start seeing more deer...but they can see me easier now too...over all i see as many deer on public as on private land...maybe even more...
