I haven't had a chance to get out yet down here.

From what I've been told the best early season turkey hunting (at least down here in SC) is ambushing the turkeys.

We'll see how it goes.

Thunderflight, someone told you wrong! Ambushing turkeys can be very dangerous. Especially with the amount of hunters we have up here. Please be careful.

Carpwarrior, why do you call to birds before season?? You know your just making them smarter. Now I know why the birds at CC are so darn wary, they get called to two months before season. You guys can have CC, I'm staying in SE Ohio. Too many hunters at CC, good way to get shot! I seriously bet there is more hunters there than turkeys. Did you read the Dayton Daily News last year about that lady complaing about her hunt getting messed up down there at CC by some guy. I think it's funny. All of these city slickers who have never even picked up a turkey call before head off to CC to mess people up left and right. That's not for me.

carpwarrior
03-23-2003, 10:21 PM
hey 10 point , i wasnt down there to mess with the bird , i just happend to drive down the road where some birds where and wanted to c if they would respond , you have a good point, but how do you know if i am a city slicker

03-23-2003, 10:37 PM
I never said you were a city slicker carp. I'm just saying there is some yahoos that hunt down there. I use to pheasant hunt down there with my pointer and people would follow me and wait till my dog to go on point and if I missed they would shoot it. I quit hunting down there period except for waterfowl and even that is pretty bad. Where abouts are you in Kettering? I live off of Dorothy Lane there by Orchard Park Elementary.

i know a lot of hillbilly boys around athens that ride the ridges every morning soon as turkeys begin gobble and practice their calling...these boys get their turkey too...the secret is to call but not to bring the turkey all way in or let it see you...so whats wrong with turkey huntin bein tuff???ain't that what turkey huntin is about???

There's nothing wrong with turkey hunting being tough, but it's all ready tough as it is and when people call to birds constantly before season it makes it even tougher. I'm not ragging on you carp, I'm just saying in general. I wish they would legalize a law that if you get caught with a turkey call before season you get a fine. I think a few states all ready have this law. I wish Ohio would adopt it. I have heard of guys that hunt in SE Ohio that live here in Dayton going to CC to practice their calling on them birds before they go down to hunt. Talk about messed up

hey 10 point & carp, i plan on going down to CC to do some calling but i will be going to the non hunting areas. see the way i figure it is the best way to practice is on the real thing, and to see what is working for me and the birds, you guys can sit at home and drive your wife/girlfriend crazy with all your calling and i promise you she won't tell you what the birds will. as long as i feel like i'm not going to screw anybody in the non-hunting areas i feel like its OK my second point is-- if i am screwing someone its OK because they should not be hunting in the non-hunting areas. ps: 10 point you had asked where in kett. i live, i live over by delphi on bingham. i drive a red blazer with a turkey and deer sticker on my back windshield.

I was driving West on Rt. 35 yesterday (Wed.) about 10:00 when around the Ross/Jackson Co. line I saw a Tom strutting with 8-10 other birds just about 50 yards from the road. Didn't have time to see gender of the other birds, had a hard enough time keeping my vehicle on the road:D

No turkeys in Adams county! I don't know where they have gone. Out for a look this afternoon, and only saw 13 or 14. Three gobblers, one looked like a nice one, and a bunch of hens trailing along. CC, this was about 5 miles southwest of Unity.
And I DO NOT call to them, and I try to avoid disturbing them in any way. Just keep a check on their location.

My hunting partner is heading out early in the moring to do some early morning scouting at some new farms we just got access to back in the winter. I would go, but I have to pull a 10hour shift tomorrow. We're both going to try and get down some days next week and do some more scouting.

Just got off the phone with my partner who went to some of our spots this morning. The first spot he went to is a field we hunt that is bordered up by a steep ridge which in the past is the birds roost spots. He got there at daylight and heard 4 birds exactly where they were last year he said. After listening to them for a while he packed up and went to another farm just up the road that we have hunted now for a few years. By then he said the birds were all ready down so he decided to take a walk and look for sign. As he walked down the loggin road he noticed something in front of him so he stopped. He got out is binoculars and saw two mature toms in full strut not over 75 yards away from him! He watched them for a while and then backed out once they left. On the way back home he drove back by the field which he was at this morning and saw two hens out in it feeding. Not a bad scouting trip. We still have several more farms to look over before seasons comes in. We'll both get out next week since I don't have to work.

Well I talked to a buddy in Guernsey Co and he said they were gobbling there. Here in Georgia our season started last weekend. I was out this morning and at 5 am they were gobbling everywhere. It was amazing, I never had heard so many all fired up at the same time. I am going to sneak in a few hours tomorrow morning.

I'll be heading to SE Ohio tomorrow early in the morning. It suppose to be cold, but they still might gobble. My partner and I have some work to do. We have a couple farms that we just gained access to that we haven't walked over yet. So we're going to do that tomorrow. Plus I just bought some new boots that I need to break in before season :D

Here on the farm I have seen two big boys strutting there stuff in the hay field across from the house. I have been listing for them each morning no sound here. I'm not calling to them. I might try the crow call in the morning & see what happens. Maybe the owl call maybe both see if I get a reply. Can't what tell season. Happy hunting.:)

went out scouting sat. no gobbles heard but i did see several birds , 63 total by 11 am, first place i checked saw 17 mix of jakes, gobblers, and hens, in a corn field, as soon as the rain let up i saw birds everywere, i keep hearing how the last two years have been a bad hatch, but a lot of the birds i saw were 1 and 2 year old jakes, so i dont know if i believe that. obtained permission from 3 new farms and saw a lot of birds on those farms, dont be shy to ask permission .

went to tennessee this past weekend to hunt there opening day. let me tell you about some serious bad luck, it was 80 deg. the whole way there, got to my moms droped the kids and ran for the woods. walked within 40 yards of a nice gobbler (on acte) saw alot of great sign couldn't have felt better about the next morn. woke up the next morning to POURING down rain and 41 deg. after getting soaked for 2 hours. called it quits for the morn. mom woke me up at 1:15 said the rain had stopped. so went back out and of corse the temp droped 6 deg and started raining AGAIN. made a deal with mom to pick me up when i called from cell phone, guess what happened? the kids got on the damn enternet for the next four hours. (their killing me) i finally got thru and my 2 year old answered then my cell phone died because i had tried to call so many times. THIS ISN'T EVEN THE GOOD PART YET got up the next morn. could not figure out why there were so many bugs out at 4:30am YEAH not bugs it was snowing and a wopping 28 deg. so i said screw it and went to moms to take a nap for the 6 hour drive home. woke up kissed everybody good bye. got about two miles away NO HEAT i had to drive 6 hours home with NO HEAT. i'm not the kind to give up so i'm taking off thursday night to try again. you guys wish me some better luck.
