I'm going to try and keep a journal of my hunts this fall. I created a map to provide a better idea to anyone that actually reads it. The map is not the best, but hopefully it helps.

http://www.ohiosportsman.com/photopost/data/522/Deer_Woods_for_Journal.JPG

Yellow spots are places I have a stand.
White spots are places I'll hunt with my climber.
Teal is water that is easily passable.

Left the house in the rain on the 30 minute drive to my spot contemplating where I'd sit. Halfway down I hit dry pavement, but I knew it wouldn't last. I got all my gear ready and was just waiting on my dad to show up. He was later than I hoped and took a while to get ready but what you gonna do?
I decided to sit in my hang-on stand down in the bottoms which is stand #3(yellow). I had been planning on using my climber on #3(white) but changed my mind. My dad always sites in #2(yellow). We headed up over the hill behind the house together and entered the edge of the field near #3(white). We turned left toward the corner of the field. We passed two scrapes under a white oak at the edge of the field. Theres always scrapes there. As we head slightly down hill toward the corner we come to a row of greens in the field. It's too dark to see anything that may be out there. Just as I start to cross I hear a deer take off and snort all the way down the greens. We get to the corner and turn right along the edge of the woods/corn. I cut in the woods first to head to my stand and dad continues down a little ways before cutting in.
I fight my way in the dark through the briars. I go about 60-70 yards till I get just short of the creek. I have to go down a fairly steep drop of about 18 feet before I get to the creek and bottoms. I desend the the hill and make my way behind my stand by going down the edge of the creek. Just as I climb in it starts to rain lightly. It's about 6:50.
My stand faces SW with the creek flowing behind me from right to left. At 7:55 I hear something splash in the creek to my left. I turn and see two young bucks standing in the creek heading to my side of the creek. The come up the bank and stay to my left moving in a hurry. One was a glorified spike and the other was a basket 8 piont with what looked like a kicker on his left side. They hurried out away from me went up the hill on the other side of the bottoms toward the road.
About 10 minutes later I turn to my right and am doing my checks around me. I notice a rack in the creek. As I stare I notice there are two bucks, but there coming in on the same path I took to my stand. I figured it was only a matter of time until they smell me. As the move toward me I notice one is a half rack with 4 points on his right and the second buck is a nice 8 point with good right side and weaker left. I'd say it'd score a shade over 100". It takes these two jokers 30 minutes to travel down the creek all of 75 yards before moving on at 8:35. They both passed 24 yards away offering me an ok shot, but not the best.
Not long after the two bucks moved along it started to pour. I hung in there till 9:30 but had to come down. It was raining too hard. I head to the house to await my dad.
Once dad showed up he told me he had 2 young does walk by at first light and that was it.
I'm not hunting this evening with thunderstorms in the forecast. I'll head out tomorrow evening and use my climber in stands #1(yellow or white).

Thanks Bill

So I headed out this evening for a hunt. I usually take the scenic route down and take the route around the property to see if anything is going on. As I came down the gravel road on the west part of the property and cuts through the property I saw what I thought was a groundhog in the middle of the road. As I got closer it turned it's head and I realized it was an owl! It was pretty cool to see. I had heard an owl on opening morning in that area but did not see one.
I pulled in the drive about 4:10 and got my gear ready. I was planning on using my new climber for the first time. I decided to sit at the north end of the property (red dot). Theres a grass field surrounded by woods on the north, west and south and then by a strip of corn on the east. I loaded up my climber and climbed the hill once again behind the house taking my time as to not work up a sweat. As I crossed the fence where I always do and entered the edge of the field I noticed the scrapes there had been freshened since the rain. My hike to my spot was only half over.
As I got toward the northern spot of the woods to turn the corner the strip of corn was absolutely destroyed. It's obvious they've been eating well. I was trying to find a tree for my climber, but was not having much luck. I eventually settled on this maple tree that was 10 yards into the woods. I climbed up the tree cutting once branch off that hung down to give me room as well as open up a shooting lane. I got settled in my 5:30 facing north, later than I wanted.
At 6:00 on the nose I turned to my left and behind me and saw a young antlerless deer working it's way to the field behind me. The next hour would go by with no deer movement. I did have a groundhog underneath me dig a hole and then stick it's butt in it and hang there for a few minutes. Not sure what he was up to.
I was getting restless with not deer showing up in the grass field in front of me. I have trail cam pictures of a few bucks using that field. I figured the bucks would feal at ease in that field because of the security. The sun was to set at 7:10. At 7:05 I finally see something enter the field all the way on the other side. I notice two deer step out. Both of the deer are bucks. Small basket racked bucks. They continue to feed in the field on the far side. Eventually they start working their way in my general direction. They stayed close to the edge of the woods. They work their way just short of the corner of the field to my left and then turn to come in front of me. The bigger of the two which was an 8 pointer came down the edge of the field right in front of as I wanted. He was broadside at 12 yards, but I passed. The other one passed at about 22 yards. The headed to my right and into the corn to feed. I could hear them tearing up the corn.
It was now way too dark to shoot so I climbed down and headed for the house.

So far this year I've seen 8 deer with 6 being bucks. Not a bad start.

Dam brother!! Sounds like an active weekend. Very nice.
How's the climber working out?

BTW, only two of us got out down by the river. We had only seen one small buck when my buddy informs me at 9:00 am that he has to get back home. Kind of sucked to leave so soon, but the wind was pretty brisk anyway.

Haven't had a chance yet to get back out again.

Heading out this evening to public land. We have a tricky NNE wind which changes my ideal set up. I'm hiking a good ways in.

I'll be out tomorrow morning and I have a good stand setup for that tricky NE wind though it should be real light in the morning. Good luck CR!

Well I headed down to my spot this evening (not pictured). I got settled in facine the west with a clearcut 30 yards to my right with woods in all other directions. I used my new climber to climb a 25-30 year old white oak. I had two fallen trees to my left acting as a fence. Anything coming out of the thicket in front of me me would have to pick one side of the "fence" which would work out well if they came on my side.
There were acorns falling all around me, but the wind was stronger than I thought when I left the house. I was hoping that being this deep in the woods I would catch a nice buck moving before sunset. I had one crop field up the hill behind me(west) about 300 yards and another to my right(north) about 200 yards. I also noticed a nice rub once I got up in my tree. I figured it was a nice staging area.
Around 6:40 I look out in front at about 10 o'clock at one end of the fallen trees and I'm sure I saw a deer's head move through an opening. I look closer, and carefully, but I don't see anything. I stand and grab my bow just in case something comes out of the thicket. Sure enough here comes a deer with a good sized body!!!
As it comes further out in the open I notice it's just a young 1 1/2 year old scrub. He had about 8" main beams and maybe some points. He passed at 30 yards and dissappeared on the other side of the clear cut.
That was the only deer I saw. I was still thrilled to see a buck though, especially on public land.

I saw a 4 pt yesterday morning. That was really cool since I thought the day would be a bust after spooking several deer on my way into my setup. He'll be a decent buck if he makes it to next fall. There will be 5 of us setting up tomorrow morning on one of our best areas.

Went down to public land this evening. The wind was going to be a big factor in activity, but I didn't care. I had nothing better to do. I pulled in to park and the same truck that was there last thursday was parked there. I had assumed it was a deer hunter.
As I started to get my gear ready and head in the guy came walking up to his truck carrying a shotgun. He says, "their in there."
I ask, "deer?"
He says, "yep."
I was a little uneasy with him having a gun and me only a bow, but there was nothing I could do about it. We start to talking and he leans his old shotgun up against his truck and it slides down the passenger door scratching it pretty good before it hit the ground. Thankfully it didn't go off. I was a little more nervous now about this guy. He then tells me he was hunting squirrels in there and that he's been hunting them since September. We keep talking and he tells me how he got lost in those woods a while back. He said he came out of the woods about 2 miles down and ended up stopping at house for directions. At first I couldn't figure out how anyone could get lost in those woods, but after talking to him more I wasn't surprised. He did pick his gun up, and inadvertantly pointed it in my direction a few times. He was a nice guy, but I hope I never see him again.
That was a strange start to the evening, but now it was time to hit the woods. I walked down the hill through the clear cut to get to my stand heading into the wind. As I get to the bottom of a dip I jumped two does on the hillside. Looked to be a young doe and a fawn. I continued to my tree and climbed up with my climber. The wind was really whipping around. I got a little chilly up there. It's difficult to keep attentive with the wind like that. I didn't see anything else unfortunately.

Sunday evening I headed down to my honeyhole. I sat in the back of the property (blue dot) at the edge of a green field. Many deer come out of the woods and follow the edge of the woods. Well I got settled into my climber stand at about 5:30. I was facing the field. I was only in the stand 5 minutes when I saw a groundhog to my right milling around. I took a short nap thereafter, maybe 5 minutes. I kept hearing noise over to my right, but didn't see anything. At about 6:15 I look over to my right and theres a deer standing right at the edge of the woods at 20 yards. Upon further observance I notice it's a buck. I'm guess he came out of the woods around the corner and then followed the edge of the woods to me. He made a couple scrapes and really hit the licking branch good. He then walked right in front of me at 12 yards. He was a decent 8 point. I'd say a top end 1 1/2 year old. He kept going to my left and entered the woods at the corner of the field. I could hear him in the woods. He eventually came out into the field as noted by the teal line. He fed all over that field.
At about 7:00 I could hear a deer coming through the woods. The leaves were very loud. It was getting pretty hard to see. What looked like a doe came out into the field 100 yards away. She fed toward the opposite side of the field. As she was making her way through the field I could hear another deer coming on the same path (magenta line). It was pretty loud. I figured it to be a couple fawns or a nice buck. I could also hear what I thought was grunting, but I thought, "it's kinda early." That deer stepped out into the field and I could barely make out the body. I did however make out a nice white rack on top of it's head. He was a nice buck. He tore after that doe. I kept in my stand hoping for him to turn my way, but he never did.
I'm a little surprised at that rutting activity. I would expect some bucks investigating the does in the field, but no chasing/grunting. It was an exciting hunt.

Sounds like a good hunt. I saw 3 bucks in a bachelor group on Saturday morning(it was kind of windy but they were out). The closest they got was 50 yards. The biggest was a dandy(maybe a 125" or so). The middle sized buck(9pt) was harvested by my friend on Sunday morning at 8:10am. I think he will be posting it on here soon. It was his first buck so he was thrilled and I was excited for him as well. Too bad I missed a doe twice or we both would have filled a tag.

I got a chance to hunt Sunday. I hunted stand #3 (yellow) in the creek bottom. I hunted until a little after 10:00. I didn't see anything, not even a squirrel.

My dad was supposed to come down and hunt Sunday evening, so I was waiting for him before I headed up. He didn't show so I called him and learned he would not be hunting. I headed to my stand around 4:30. I was planning on hunting the northern edge of the property at the edge of the field. I've stayed out of the woods so far this season. I planned on waiting till the last week of October to hunt the interior of the woods. As I got closer to my spot I decided to hunt the inerior of the woods (#1 yellow). As I'm walking in I see rubs and scrapes everywhere. Many fresh, many a week or two old. I'm thinking, alright! As I get to my tree I look over and theres a stand hanging not more than 15 yards from my tree. Someone put up a damn stand on my grandparents property right where I hunt!! It was a homemade job, and this puppy was high. It was at least 25 feet. I debated what to do. I had been down there all day to hunt and hadn't seen anything in the morning, and went to my best spot only to find this. I decided to hunt where I had planned to at the field edge and worry about the stand another day. I hunted and saw 6-8 deer including a small buck.
I talked to my dad who planned on hunting this morning and then taking the stand down. I really wanted to rip the p.o.s. off the tree, but I thought it'd be best to take the thing down and ask the neighbors about it first. I leave stands hanging in the woods and I don't want them to show up missing.
Maybe someone had permission to hunt the neighbor's and trespassed by accident. I doubt it, but I'll give them the benefit of doubt this time. I actually have seen this stand before too. I saw it on the neighbor's last spring shed hunting, after I gained permission. The neighbor does not bowhunt and didn't let people bowhunt until 2 years ago. Supposedly he lets one guy hunt.
My dad is going to ask this particular neighbor about it today. I can't wait to find out how it went.

I got home late, but decided to head down to my grandparents for a couple hours. The deer have really started to move more. I didn't get there till 4 and then my grandpa had me take a look at his tv he was having problems with, so that cut into my time. I left the house about 4:40. I loaded up my climber planning on hunting in the back in #1 (white). As I got up to the top of the hill behind the house and entred the field I went slowly. I come out in a bit of a dip before I go up a slight grade. Once I reach the top of the hill the field slops down like a bowl into the woods. The back of the woods where I was going to hunt is on top of the ridge as it curves from the field into the woods. Anyway, as I come over the ridge I can see there is a doe bedded in the field, not far from where I was heading. I pulled up my binos to take a look and see another small doe with her. I didn't want to spook them so I turned back into the woods which is on the side of a hill to give me cover as I go toward my other stands. As I begin to cut across the corner of the field I look out and see a small buck come out of the woods near the doe. He chased them into the woods. I then decided to hunt stand #4 (yellow). I dropped my climber off near a tree away from stand #4 which is a chain on. I climbed up and got settled in around 5:40. Not much time left. After about 30 minutes I looked to my left and saw a deer coming. Pretty soon I noticed it was a small yearling and a young doe followed by a small buck. It had to have been the same deer I'd just seen. He was a small 4 point. He had is nose down every few steps and he was grunting. They disappeared toward the creek bottom. That was all I would see from my stand. I did see two out the field on my way in.

The blue lines represent the deer I saw on my way to my stand and while on stand. The orange line is my way of travel.

Well I didn't think I'd get out this week, but I had an appointment reschedule which opened up last evening.

I packed my climber and headed to the back of the property. Theres been quite a bit of buck sign back there including a few scrapes. I was going to sit in an ol walnut tree that I sit in quite often. It's about 25 yards from the edge of the woods and theres a number of trails that come together to enter the field in between the tree and the field. There also is a large scrape less than 20 yards behind that tree. I decided to hunt in a different tree last night that was 30 yards on the other side of that scrape deeper in the woods. I wanted to cover a trail that cuts deeper in the woods.
I got settled in about 4:15, later than I wanted, but I'll take it. My stand was facing the field and the scrape. In such a situation I stand most of the time and face the opposite direction my stand faces toward the thicker woods. Not sure what time it was, but I'd say about 5:00, I'm standing up facing the thick woods when I hear something behind me. I slowly turn around and there's a very nice P & Y standing right in the middle of that scrape. His head was up and he was all over the licking branch. He stood in that scrape peeing on his tarsal glands twice and pawing the ground. It was an awesome site.
It took me some waiting to get my bow in hand, but I did. He turned and started heading back where he came from to my right. He stopped a couple times and looked around. I hit my lil' can a few times and it stopped him. He started to come my way a few times, but stopped. He stayed put for about 5 minutes at a range of 40 yards. He walked then into a thicket to my right. I could see his antlers heading into the thicket moving away at an angle. I hit the grunt tube a couple times, but I don't think he heard me. He moved out of sight. As I did so I heard more deer. I turn behind me and to my right to see two young bucks coming off a knoll on the neighbor's property. They were about 50 yards away standing there. One of the small bucks starting moving my way. He made a bee line to my stand and got to within 3 yards looking up right at me twice before spooking and running off to 40 yards again. I hoped that would get the P&Y bucks attentin. Sure enough it did. The P&Y emerged from the thicket for the young bucks. He was still out of range. He stood there for a few minutes. They were all behind me and to my right. I then heard another deer approaching on my left. I turned to look and theres a small antlerless deer coming in. I thought great, she'll get the bucks attention and bring him right in. "She" is on a trail that passes 10 yards off in front of me. The nice buck sees "her" and continues behind me to get on "her" trail. He's sniffing her trail behind me and to my left as "she" passes right in front of me. "She" turned out to be a button buck. The button hit the scrape in front of me and the big one moved off to my left out sight and by another tree I usually sit in.
The young bucks moved on to my right and the button did as well. I could also see a few does moving out the field as well.
The large buck was a nice buck. He was a 4X5 with nice width just passed his ears. His beams actually curved in toward the end. His G2 and G3's were about 8" and his brows around 4. His body was not that big, it wasn't small though. If this guy lives to his potential he's going to be a whopper. I would've taken him if given the oppertunity. If I had set up in the tree that I had planned on I would've had him broadside at less than 20 yards. He managed to pass within 20 yards of another tree I normally sit in as well.
I won't make it down there again until Monday at the earliest.

I made it out Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.

*Saturday*
With the poor weather Saturday I didn't hunt the morning. I spent time with my wife. I got out around 3:30 Saturday. Later than I wanted. I sat in the back of the property with my stand facing a thicket to the west. I had a north wind. I had just sat down in my stand when I look a little to my left to find a small fawn coming in. She passed to my left and nibbled on some briar leaves. She hung out for over half an hour before moving on. At last light another one showed up to my right and moved on behind me as well. I was a little let down.

*Sunday*
I was excited about Sunday morning because I hadn't hunted the mornings but twice this season. I was to hunt out the same stand I hunted Saturday evening. It's a great morning stand. On my way in I jumped one in the field just before I got to where I enter the woods. I actually got pretty close to it. I couldn't tell what it was. I got settled in to my stand knowing it would be difficult to hear deer approaching in the wet leaves. I was facing the same thicket under the oaks. I normally see quite a bit of chasing going on in there this time of the year. I sat there for maybe the first hour and saw nothing. I decided to do some rattling. Just as I put the antlers down I see a buck coming up out of the thicket in front of me. He was in no hurry and made no noise. Just as I saw him he bedded down. I got the binos out to take a closer look. He as the biggest six point I've ever seen. Strange looking rack. It had a 19-20" spread with beams that came out a decent distance with 2-3" brows and 4" G2's that were close to the tip of his beams. The G2's should've been G4's from the proportion.
Anyway he stayed bedded down about 45 yards out. He was keeping an eye on the thicket below as I was. After bedding for about 30 minutes he stood up and hurried down the slight hill in sort of a hurry. I watched him as he chased a doe around the woods and I lost site of both.
A few minutes after they moved on I look in front of me to see a small buck just 25 yards out. He worked a licking branch for a while and then proceeded to bed down just 19 yards away, he was a 3x2. I see him dose off a couple times.
While the 5 is bedded down I look to my left and see 2 young does, one of which was a fawn, come off the hill and out of a thicket. They were directly down wind of me. The stood alert and nervous. I think the one saw me turn my head their way. The one doe snorted a few times before the two moved on out of sight. All the while the 5 point stood there watching them. After they moved on he layed back down. He layed there facing down the hill before looking behind him and to my right a couple times. I looked over to my right to see what might be going on. I saw nothing. A few minutes later I hear something to my right so I looked over to see a small 4 point. This was a 4 point I've seen several times. He moved behind me at less than 10 yards. I didn't turn my head to watch him. He eventually moved back in front of me toward the bedded down 5 point. I thought I would get to see a little fith. The 4 point had his hair puffed out as he approached the 5. The 5 stayed bedded down and they actually locked antlers before the 5 stood up. The tickled each others antlers a little. The 5 wanted nothing to do with the 4. He turned and walked away about 5 yards. The 5 followed and they faced each other and "tickled" some more and licked each other's foreheads. The 4 eventually moved down the hill and worked the same licking branch the 5 had worked and then continued on down. The 5 made his way to my right and rubbed a bunch of small trees before circling behind me and through the thicket on my left that the two does had gone to.
At about 11 I look down on front of me and to my left to see a buck coming up the hill and to the thicket on my left. It was the big 6 from earlier. He moved into the thicket and wandered around a bit before making his way over the other side of the hill on my left.
I decided to come down at about 12 because I thought my grandma may be worried. I didn't tell her I was planning on staying up all day.

*Sunday Eveing*

I got back up to my stand a little after 1400. I had walked up without my coveralls on as to not get too hot and sweaty. I climbed the stand with the intention on putting them on in stand. I got up in the stand with my bow up and all. As I take a seat to slip on my coveralls I hear a bunch of noise in front of me. I looke closely to see a buck tearing up some bruch and branches. He was totally whooping on the brush. I manage to slip my coveralls on without him seeing me. It was the same large 6 point from the morning. He didn't stick around long as he moved down the hill away from me. Jus as he moves on I hear brush cracking in front of me and a little to my left about 100 yards away. The 6 point made a beeline toward the noise. It was 2 young bucks chasing a doe. The 6 point chased off the two young bucks. The two young bucks moved on to my left up the hill and into the thicket. The 6 point and doe moved out of sight. At the same time I could see a group of antlerless deer hanging around down and to my right slightly at a range of 130 yards. I couldn't tell what they were doing. They stayed down there and eventually made their way out of sight. Not long after they moved on a young buck and a doe appeared in front of me and stayed in the brush for a while. They just hung out there. Sometime after that I heard a noise over to my right and in front of me a ways to see a couple does and a couple bucks coming in my direction. They get in front of me and to my right out of range. The does are cornered in the briars by the bucks. The does turn around and jog to my right and out of view. The two bucks were a young 8 and another small young buck gave chase to them. All the deer had moved on. I didn't see anything the last 1 1/2 hours I was on stand except for a small fawn that fed in the field to my right.

Overall it was an exciting day. I saw quite a few deer with some exciting action. I was a little dissappointed that I didn't see any more mature deer. I normally would've seen some nice bucks. Not sure where they all were.

Heres how my gun week went. I've been too exhausted to type it up.

Monday: Got settled in to my creek bottom stand. About 20 minutes after shooting time I spotted a young doe/bb to my right up-stream to the north about 100 yards. She moved on. Twenty minutes after that I had a pretty nice 7 point chase a doe less than 15 yards in front of me. I passed. Around 9:00 I spotted a group of deer in the same spot as the doe/bb had showed up earlier. It happened to be a doe, a fawn and 2 young bucks. The small of the bucks moved north and the other 3 came my way. The buck that came my way was a half racked 4 point. I passed on them too. At about 9:30 I look to my right again to see a doe running my way. She got to within 50 yards and turned in front of me and walked up the hill. Not long after that the 7 point came trotting down the trail the doe had been on. He went up the hill as well. I sat there without any action until about 11:00. At 11 I stood up and looked to my right and there in the creek was a doe. She saw me and turned away. She was with 4 other deer. They trotted up the hill that runs along the creek behind me. My dad was hunting up there. I was just waiting for a shot. A minute later I here my dad shoot 3 times. He radios me to tell me he shot a button buck and a doe.
I would sit there in my stand the rest of the day without seeing a think until last light when I saw about as small a doe as you'll see. I passed.

Tuesday: Worked (Dad shot a small 8 point where I sat Monday)
Wednesday: Worked
Thursday: Worked in the morning. Hunted in the evening. I didn't see a thing
Friday: Hunted in the morning until 9. I got soaked. I did pass on two doe. It got windy as the day progressed so I put my climber in a new place and then sat on the ground nearby in the evening. I didn't see a thing.
Saturday: I hunted out of my climber on the edge of a bedding area. I didn't have any action until 9. I had 5 doe run across the field I can see from my stand. Not long after that I had 2 doe and 2 fawn pass behind me and move onto the neighbors. A few minutes after they move on toward the neighbors I see a deer come behind me on the same trail. It was a doe with a button buck and 5 pointer. The 5 pointer chased those deer around me for a while. The doe and button were tired, their toungues were hanging out big time. (The deer I saw earlier that morning as well as Monday had their toungues hanging out too. ) The doe and button bedded down right behind me while the 5 stood there and tried to get them up. I was hoping they would run off because I had to climb down. I had to be down by 10 so I could get to an appointment I had with a family for my business. Luckily the 5 did get them up and run them off toward my creek bottom stand.
Sunday: Hunted all day. Creek bottom in the morning til 11:00 with nothing but a young buck showing up. In the evening I sat in my climber with nothing happening besides 2 does as separate times. One came across the field and ran down through the woods and the other one came along the edge of the woods.

I didn't harvest any deer, but passed on several doe and young bucks. I have plenty of days to hunt. I enjoyed the time in the woods.

I tell people all the time how much I enjoy just sitting in the woods. They say to me, "you havn't got a deer yet, all you have to do is drive down so and so road and you'll hit one."
Getting a deer where I hunt is not difficult. There's plenty of them. Getting a mature deer is. I'm in no hurry. I wish I was sitting in the deer stand right now with the snow flying.
