I'm going to save my best spot for Saturday evening. In the morning i'm going to hunt a part of a funnel with quite a few white oaks around it and just outside a bedding area. My best spot is on the other side of a field and I hate to jump deer getting to it. There's no other way to get in. I'll hunt it come evening time.

I'm going in with my ghillie suit to hunt the ridgetops on opening morning. They come up out of a field early in the morning and roam the hillsides some. Hoping to catch some looking for acorns before they bed down. In the afternoon I'll probably still hunt some draws in another area and save the field edge stand for the evening. I'm confident I'll get a shot if there isn't anyone else roaming around the woods in my area. Praying for rain too.
I'm just hoping to get a few does early on. I actually hope I don't see any decent bucks opening day since I want to save my buck tag for the rut. The anticipation is almost overwhelming at this point!

Coonskinner,
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that gets a little jittery walking alone in the woods in the middle of the night or early morning. I'm not exactly sure what I'm worried about, but still get the jitters. Sometimes I turn my light on periodically, just so some idiot doesn't shoot at me in the dark thinking I'm a deer.
The place that always gives me the creeps is this old cemetery a couple of hundred yards off the road that I have to walk through in the dark. As I go through the thick stuff on either side of it every little noise makes me bolt and jump. I was hoping I'd grow out of that some day, but still haven't.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only sissy in the woods Saturday morning. Nothing better than finally getting in that tree. :hide: I use a red led headlamp now, you can see about 15 feet with it and trail tacks shine back at like 50 yards.
With that headlamp I have walked up on rabbits at my feet and they didn't jump guess they really can't see it.

I guess we've hijacked this thread into "Who else is scared of the dark?". I mostly hunt in the evenings, so I'm coming out to the truck in the dark. When my feet hit the ground and I unhook my Horton from the pull-up rope I am head down straight to the truck. I figure if I keep looking at my feet I don't have to wonder what that strange thing is that seems to be coming toward me. :yikes: :yikes: Glad to see I'm in good company. Good luck Sat. to all y'all.

Almost completely scent free.

I'll go out Saturday evening if the weather is fit...not too hot and not too wet...My woods still has standing corn on one side and they havn't touched any of the fields around here yet. I really think the deer live in the corn fields untill they cut them down...but I'll go anyway just in case there's an odd ball deer out crusing the woods...I only hunt one place that spooks me in the dark...there is an old cemetary in one of the places I hunt down south and it has pines planted up to the front and the back of it...they make it really dark and it looks like a scene from a Stephen King novel or something...However there is a huge ten pointer that lives about 1/4 mile back from it (saw him last year twice, once in November and again in January) and I'll just suck it up and make the trip, dark or not...After all He that is in me is greater than he who is in the world...Anyone ever had a turkey flush from a roost right over your head when they were going in in the dark? That's a treat...Good Hunting...

Oh yeah I have. I was about 13 when it happend and I was alone. It scared the snot out of me. That was the first time I'd seen a turkey in those woods. They've been around ever since.

And does anyone know the science behind that claim?

From the Quality Deer Management Association
http://www.qdma.com/articles/details.asp?id=48
The results of our study confirmed that deer possess two (rather than three as in humans) types of cones allowing limited color vision (Figure 1). The cone that deer lack is the “red” cone, or the one sensitive to long wavelength colors such as red and orange. This suggests that wearing bright colors while hunting does not affect hunting success. This does not mean that these colors are invisible to deer, but rather that they are perceived differently.
Deer are essentially red-green color blind like some humans. Their color vision is limited to the short (blue) and middle (green) wavelength colors. As a result, deer likely can distinguish blue from red, but not green from red, or orange from red. Therefore, it appears that hunters would be equally suited wearing green, red, or orange clothing but perhaps slightly disadvantaged wearing blue.
So in conclusion deer can see something but it isn't red. in low light conditions deer see red as black. This is good if you are walking in the dark using a red light. Deer can see better at night but if they are real close they see your red light as a dark area or shadow. And the greatest thing it doesn't mess with your night vision. In higher uv light situations like daylight they actually see your red light as green. so you look like a giant tree or bush.. But honestly you'll look mighty funny stalking during the day with a red headlamp on.. And it's probably illegal.

I wear a light in the dark just becuase I can't see very well and I hate tripping over things in the dark. You want to talk about things in the dark I got one for you. I went on an evening hunt last year with a buddy and he shot a six pointer right before dark. We tracked it for several hours before we found it. While we where field dressing it he goes do you hear that, and I stopped and listened and I could hear several things circling us right out side of the range of our lights. That made the old hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up. After a couple of minutes of listening to things circling us there was a coyote yep at about 30 yards or so away. Them darn things circled us all the way to the edge of the woods while dragged the buck out to the truck. I didn't like that at all, not one bit. You the bad thing about all that was the only weapon we had where our knives. That is part of the reason I carry I big knife now, beside it works great on deer.

I wear the light because I am a sissy...Sometimes I curl into a little ball once I get to my stand and cry because it is so tramatizing walking in the dark :hide: .
I am taking my buddy from LA out for his first bow hunt Saturday AM. I have a buddy stand that over looks a shelf the is used heavily to get from bedding to the soy-bean field about 1/4 mile away. We should see deer and I will be there with the video camera. He only has 20 yard chip shots, and we can hunt it on any wind but a North one...and it looks to be out of the South with is best.

I bought a streamlight headlamp for this season with the green LED lights. I was goofing around with it the other night and shined it on a opposum, and he didn't react to the light at all. Deer and opposum eyes are both designed for nightvision so I'd say the chances are pretty good that a deer would react the same.
