I'm considering the purchase of a "home defense weapon" and would like to know what is most commonly used. :)

Thank you, Bowhunter57

There is way to much left unsaid here to tell you: do you have kids in the house or are you close to anyone else that may be hit by a miss??? Can everyone in the house that could use the weapon, able to use it???
For my wife, I have a 9MM with Glacer Safty Slugs, they are about $3 bucks a shot now but you will only need one if you hit them and they will not go through a wall... I have 4 sons in the house and do not wish to have the troma of hitting one, in another room if needed to defend us. Mommy aslo has a shotgun that would work but like I said, the boys are right there, if not, that is what I would leave loaded for her. I also have a safe that opens on finger tips, welded to the bed frame so she can get to it fast if she needs to...

A big dog will deter alot of would be theives.

If you can't have a dog then a shot gun would be better. In the heat of the moment all you have to do is point and shoot. With a handgun you have to aim.

Also stray shot gun bb's aren't going to travel as far an actual bullet. If you miss and a stray round hits your neighbor then your probably going to be in big trouble.

7th,
An excellent point! :)

It's just the wife and I, so I do the "home defense" thing. She does not handle weapons of any kind.

In the case of an intruder, I check where my wife's at first and after that all hell will break loose. I live in the country, so stray bullets, buckshot, etc. aren't a concern.

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

very good advice 7th. i have grandchildren visit us often. all my guns are kept locked up when they are here, i just won't risk it.

back to the topic, i recommend a tactical 12 gauge pump. short and sweet. just the sound of the action cycling will scare off a common burglar or thug...someone there to harm you (and armed) is another scenario. but i would still prefer the short shotgun and buckshot.

the only time i have ever needed to defend my life i used the idiots gun who attacked me but if it was in my own home i guess whatever i have handy mostly hunting guns like my o/u and my pump or my guttin knife p.s i would stronlgy urdge youe wife to learn to target shoot if yah get a handgun also how to clear a weapon whatever you choose

I like the idea of the short pump but would pass on the buck shot and go with a load of 7 1/2 shot. In a room you will blow them in big belly button and no over penatration, again back to having Mommy in the house. I also urge you to get her out and shoot it some just so she can use it if she would have to and not be scared to death of it...
That was some good info on getting her up on unloading and getting guns in a safe way. You never know what they will bring in if they come in and if something would happen to you, could she clear all weapons and make them safe???
I would get her into the conseal carry class, even if she don't get a CCW. This will cover all the areas that I have asked you about...

I keep my trusty Kimber .45 CDP ultra on me at all times when I am not sleeping. When I retire (for bed) I have a Kimber .45 Eclipse ULE with Crimson Trace laser sights at the ready. My wife keeps her S&W model 60 ready as well.

A large dog w/attitude, a Taurus .45 auto and a .38 revolver. Im no expert but everything Ive watched and read about personal/home defense would suggest using a handgun over a shotgun. Mainly because of tight spot situations in your home. Swinging even a short barrel near doors/doorways or in narrow hallways can be tough especially when most gun fights occur several feet away.

i agree on the bb theory vs. bullet...thats why i choose other...i say a claymore ...pointed at each window and at each door...i lay in bed with the plunger...layin awake...waitin...:D

Just my opinion but handguns are really poor manstoppers compared to centerfire rifles and shotguns. Handguns are meant to buy you time so you can get to your rifle/shotgun. This coming from a dyed in the wool .45acp shooter. Of course a handgun is better than the liberal's view that you should dial 911 and wait patiently for the cops to show up while you lay dieing and your wife or daughter is being raped.

Got the old S&W Sigma 9mm w/ 16 rounds of self-defense ammo right on top of my Bible next to the bed. That's my home defense, if I can't hit 'em with 16 rounds its up to the good Lord to save me from there.

I just bought a new Springfield XD 45ACP and it is awesome! Now I see why it won handgun of the year, and it would be a good choice. I do however have a nice little 28 guage pump that would work as well. :mischeif:

I have one of these in 44 mag and a mossburg 12 gauge loaded with 00 buck. Let me tell you the pistol is no fun to just go out and shoot but it will stop just about anything in North America.

I would have to agree with NKhunter. Saw a video a while back about the effects handgun rounds have on the human body. It showed several examples of individuals taking multiple 9mm rounds to the back, a .44 to the face, etc. They said THAT guy managed to run a city block before dying. Anyway, I have a hand cannon and a 12 ga. capable of holding three inchers.

Glock, easy to grab and easy to use. If you can't stop them with what is in the clip(s) ya better have something hard to hit them with.
