Just wondered how the fishing in this lake is? I have heard it is one of the biggest (non dam) man made lakes ever made.

Hey Steve, I'm from St Marys and yes it was once The biggest man made lake in the world. Also it had the worlds first offshore oil rig. As stated it is a shallow lake. Averages only about 6'. You can go anywhere anytime and catch catfish, as long as the wind is in your face. Everything else is slow and has been for awhile. They do get some bass there during the tourneys. On the South bank there is alot of channels and wooded areas to fish. There are some stocked walleyes in it and its hit or miss with them. There is a nice and large campground on the north bank. The lake itself is about 11 miles long and about 1.5 mile wide. Not sure where you are coming from but if it was up to me I would go about 30 miles east and fish Indian Lake. If you have anymore questions let me know.

One good thing about this time of year right now is that the Blue Green Algae of the lake is starting to die off and the lake is getting some clairty back. If you have never seen the lake first hand, you'll notice the blue/green color of the water. The algae has really tainted the water quality. Right now Lake Loramie (Ft. Loramie, Shelby County) has been doing well with bluegills and large numbers of saugeye are being caught all over the lake.

I did notice how blue the water looked in July. It almost looked like fake water from a movie set.

I work for a civil engineering in Celina and we are constantly hearing all of these "grand" ideas for cleaning the water up. Just imagine a big ole bowl of pea soup, that is what Grand Lake looks like right now in July and August. I catfish on the southside of the lake from Sunnyside to Bass Island in April and May, but after that I won't eat a fish out of that lake. There's a big stink going on right now between the farmers to the South of the lake and people who want to clean up the water in the lake. Mercer County is the #1 agricultural county in total output, and #1 in number of livestock in the state. The farmer's have to spread manure, and the lake protection folks are banging heads. It also doesn't help when there are three golf courses that I know of right now in the watershed that are pouring on the fertilizer. The woes there mainly come from farm field runoff (manure, fertilizer, etc.), failing septic systems in the watershed, storm run off from Celina & St. Marys amongest others, and the golf courses. I wish Grand Lake could follow the trend of Indian Lake. Lake Loramie though is in the same kind of farm setting though as Grand Lake and their water quality is pretty good, still murky but not sick looking and that lake is on average only 3-4' deep.
