Your hunting with a bow and gun. Which weapon would you use to kill your first caribou?

I would try bow first. I think it would be more rewarding. But if it got down to the wire and no Bou. Out comes the Weatherby.

I would take the rifle first,Take your first Bou then you can the have time neede with the bow for the second bou and i hear you need plenty of time with a bow.

Rifle first to get the monkey off your back early; then take your time and enjoy hunting with a bow.

My thoughts at first also. But, it comes down to what you really want to do. I thought about for a second if it was me and I think I'd try the bow first then if no luck break out the rifle.

Definitely bow first, from everything I've heard the rifle is a slam dunk. One thing to watch is the weather, one guy I know said it was too windy to bowhunt a couple of days they were there.

Ok I was in Alaska last Sept. I hunted with my bow and the only gun I had was a 44 mag. for bear protection, which I highly recommend. I watched a carribou of my dreams through a spotting scope. No way to get to it, all open ground, and no cover. I will say this much if I get the chance to do it all over again and hopefully I will in 08, I will take my bow and 44 mag. again. If you take a gun and a bow you will end up shooting one with the gun, becuase you will know the gun is there to use so you won't hunt as hard as you think you will with the bow. Yes, it would be like shooting fish in a barrell with a gun. Yes, it is very hard to shoot one with a bow, but the rewards of getting one will be a lot more than if you shoot one with a gun. If you like hunting with a bow leave the gun at home and be prepared mentally if you don't get one. I could ramble on a lot more but I will leave you with this.

I would use the gun as a walking stick( not really) and use the bow. You see on tv these 200-300 yard shots. The hunters are just like snipers. If thats what floats yer boat then I have no problem with that but I jsut dont see ANY challenge with that at all besides maybe siteing the gun in for those distances. Its not about making the kill, its about the thrill. 10 steps in front of you behind a big boulder is pure adrenilene. my .2$

Well here is my plan.
I'm going to bow hunt the first day or two and then switch to a gun on the third day or fourth day.
This isn't a hunt that I'll be doing again soon. Infact it'll be well after 2010 before I go again so I want to make this trip count.
Regardless of how I kill (if I even kill one) I am still going to have a great time and that's all that matters.

I guess it all depends on how bad you want to kill a bou. If you REALLY want to kill one take the gun and kill the first one and then switch to the bow. Just my thought but I would hate to go that far to kill a bou and come back empty handed. I just think if you kill one with the gun first you wont be so pressured when hunting with the bow thinking "Oh man, its my last day and I havent got one yet, what am I going to do?".

Change in plans.
Now that I'm going to use my Marlin Model 36 30-30 I plan on shooting a caribou with it first and then pull out my recurve.

Nope, no bad mojo. This gun has history. You see it was my Dad's gun. He bought it to go deer hunting in Michigan back in the mid 70's. I still remember the day he brought it home and how proud he was the day he showed it to his friends. The box was red and black and Dad was wearing a plad shirt. Dad never did go on that hunting trip, but he loaned the gun to a few friends. To be honest I don't think they shot anything with it either. I know Dad killed a ground hog with it. He said it flew six feet in the air.
Anyway in a wierd way it'll be kinda like having Dad with me.
Also I really want to shove success down the throats of my fellow Bear Bay'rs. They keep telling me that a 30-30 won't kill a caribou so I want to prove them wrong. eerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:bouncy:

Something to consider is most bush pilots set a weight limit on how much weight you can carry on board the plane. It took me for ever to get my gear weight down enough to make weight. I think when I started packing I had everything but the kitchen sink with me. I believe a 30-30 will kill a bou with no problem. I think it would be more rewarding to shot a bou with a bow over a rifle, but I understand why you want to take the gun. That picture of me in the corner is me in Alaska bou hunting the Malchatna herd. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Have some confidence with your bow man!
Take both with the bow and impress yourself to no end. If you can hit the little kill zone on a whitetail like you did last season, there's no reason why you couldn't on a Caribou at near the same range ............

I would love to hunt bear some day with a bow and I mean a real bear like a big brown. I will say this much right now I don't think I have the guts to get that close to one of them. Have you ever read or seen what one of them things are capable of. A 900 pound bear can decide to charge and in 3 to 4 seconds, yes seconds, cover 100 yards. I think I would rather tangle with a VW Bug, at least it doesn't have sharp teeth and claws. Some day I will get the money and never up and just do it, hopefully.

I would have to say gun because if im going on a hunt like that i wanna take something that i feel comfortable with and a bow would not be one of them one....because u may never get close enought and 2 just makes it easier atleast for your first hunt......after you get one under your belt bow hunt all you want

I went to Alaska last year and took my bow bou huntin. The terrian was very open adn I didn't get a shot. That was my first time bou hunting. I am going back again in 08 and I will take my bow again, this time I have a better ideal of whats going on and how to handle it. I feel pretty confident this next time. As far as what weapon to take it jsut dependes on if you ever plan on going back or not.

I think you should go to private/qdm land and use an atv, climb a tree, use a gun...with sights of course , use an outfitter and hunt over a food plot with a fence around it and take a couple of trail cams and put them on the fence, maybe even use a plane and a boat...why not....beats using a tri-cycle.:mischeif:
