Who’s the best hunter / outdoorsman you know? Or more specifically, who’s taught you the most about our sport that has helped you to be successful in the field? This doesn’t have to be a hunting celebrity or a close personal friend. Undoubtedly, some of best guys out there shy away from the lime light. What makes this person (s) special, and what have you learned from them?

COB ;) :mischeif:

Seriously, I really can't single out one person. I know I've picked up things from all my friends and also learned alot of lessons on my own. That's probably why I haven't killed a hog in four years, I'm a lousy turkey hunter, and ok deer hunter. ;) :bouncy: ;) :bouncy:

I'd say my father. Not that he knows everything about the outdoors, but he is the one that got me involved in the outdoors. If it were not for him I'm not sure that I would've had the oppertunities to learn and grow on my own in the outdoors. My dad didn't really become the avid outdoorsman he is until I started getting old enough to hit the woods with him regularly.
We've learned alot over the years together.

I would have to say my Dad and my grandfather have taught me the most, because they are the ones who started me in hunting by taking me into the woods as a kid and taught me the finer points of hunting as i got older.......but the best hunter i know is my grandfather and mine hunting partner, he always seems to fill all his tags every year and no matter where he goes in the woods the deer seem to find him.....:)

My dad taught me to fish and hunt small game. Deer and Turkey I had to teach myself. And help from guys on this sight. My love of the outdoors I was just born with. I know this guy named Larry, really good hunter. Respect him a lot.

Those of you who say father / grandfather are very fortunate. My dad and I are very close but he’s never hunted a day in his life so we don’t have those memories. Neither of my grandfathers hunted.

Eddie Salter is hands down the best turkey hunter I know, but I’ve learned the most from my good friend Mike Wren. Roger Rothhaar is the best deer hunter I know (that oughta’ raise some eyebrows) but I haven’t spoke with him in several years. Butch Todd would be a close second.

The best all around hunters I know (deer and turkey) would be my good friends JR Tucker from Chillicothe and John Jezioro from Fairmont West Virginia. I consult Tucker more for turkeys and Jezioro more for deer, but both are excellent deer and turkey hunters. JR is an excellent caller and won’t go in the woods unless he can film the hunt. John is very “stealthy” and almost has a sixth sense about deer movement. Both of these guys have killed multiple BBBC qualifiers with a bow and are also excellent musky fisherman. John set a line class world record last year. Like most of you, I have many friends that like to hunt, but these are the guys I go to for advice and an occasional pep talk.

Hopefully if my sons are ever asked this question, their answer will be different than mine.

My dad - he was a hard working man and never scouted or took target practice - he was a crack shot and always came home with game for the table - just a natural hunter and shot - miss those days

take care

My Dad helped get the spark ignited when he took me duck hunting back in the early 80's, but aside from that he didn't hunt anything else.

I just thought about one guy who is a hunt'n machine. That's my buddy Rodney. We where stationed together in Maryland and that guy has killed some impressive animals and the majority of them have been on public and military hunting grounds. He has also killed two P&Y elk and is an excellent bass fisherman too.

My Dad first and both of his brothers. All three of them are extreamly good at both! Not to be funny, but they are from a little town in West Virginia called White Sulpher Springs in Greenbrier County. (That's right the county where the movie Wrong Turn was supposed to be! ) So until they moved away from there what else did they have to do but Hunt & Fish!

My dad got me involved in fishing, and my uncle got me involved in hunting and shooting sports. I intend to carry them on to my kids.

My first husband was quite the hunter. He had killed several animals, but unfortunatly he also bankrupted us doing it.

My dad, bar none. From the time I could walk, I was stumbling through the swamp behind him. He taught me everything I know about scouting, hunting, shooting, heck, even just walking through the woods. Best man I've ever known, too.

As fpr learning hunting and fishing and shooting my Dad showed me everything. But not being too arrogant, but i'm the best deer hunter I know. Usually most people come to me. But I know I have a ton to learn. Gotta Go.

Well, the question is who is the best hunter I know. With that being said the best one I know personally is SpittinSpurs. He's an awesome shot with a shotgun, knows how to get in position on rabbits better than anyone else I have eve hunted with, is cagy when it comes to turkey and he can hang with most deer hunters. Now, I can't say he is the best at hunting any one specific animal, but he is the best all-around hunter and outdoorsman that I know.

I too was not blessed with a father or grandfather that hunted or fished for that matter. My uncle got me hard-core into fishing and then when I got older I learned a lot on my own and from friends about hunting. I also have a lot of respect for my friend Glenn who is actually the guy who talked me into buying the crossbow which began my hunting pursuit about 12 years ago.

I can honestly say that about every hunter I have ever met has something of interest to share. Their ideas and passion for a sport such as ours is shared in many ways thru stories and experiances. To say that I look up to one great hunter is not all that possible.

One gentleman that stands out in my mind from the past is Ben Lee. He made videos when videos weren't even cool yet. And some of the things he did I have never seen these johnny come lately boys even attemp.

I know a lot of great hunters even from right here in Ross Co. and other parts of Ohio as well.

my dad introduced me to fishing and then trapping muskrats and hunting small game. but i wasn't allowed to own a gun or take his out without him :mischeif: till i was 16. just dad's rule. then we deer hunted a few times, till dad kinda gave up hunting but we did continue to fish alot together.

i have to thank my brother in law Mike Andrews for getting me back to the woods and hunting 20 years ago, specifically bow hunting. Mike is a great well rounded outdoorsman, with an uncanny nack for the outdoors. a great friend and fun to be around. ( i just said that in case Mike happens to be lurking around this site ) :mischeif:

i lost my good fishing and huntin buddy and oldest son Eric 6 years ago. took him fishing and hunting and camping when he was 5 and he was a natural in the outdoors, always adventurous and learning.
thanks for the memories Eric. Love ya.

and lastly, i continue to learn from the great bunch of folks on OhioSportsman.com i continue to learns things by hangin out with you folks. and hopefully sometimes i contribute something that helps someone else. thought provoking thread mrex...thank you:)

Not sure- my dad dont deer or turkey hunt. I just watched tv shows- researched on the internet. Went to Ohio Deer & turkey expo seminars. Then when I was out in the field it all came naturally kinda like a wild animals instinct. I took a 9 point and a jake my first year ever hunting(2002). Its all been a straight ride from there.

Just to elaborate since I had to leave quickly last night, I don't really know too many "serious" deer hunters. Bow hunting is a relatively new phenomenon aroung here. Growing up I thought deer hunting started 4 days after thanksgiving every year. Then I started watching bowhunting on TV and became real intrigued and Dad and I bought some old bows and failed miserably for awhile. Dad showed me how to hunt secondary trails that deer use when pressured and that increased my sightings by a whole lot. Mostly we started scouting together and learned on our own for the most part. My Dad is the best shot I know. Army special forces.
