View Full Version : New deer stand going up

I picked the hottest day of the year so far to start. I sank four 16' posts into the ground against a walnut tree. The bottom is going to have a platform that will eventually become a blind for turkey hunting. The top is going to have solid sides and a roof for deer hunting. The upper platform floor will be about 14' off the ground. I have prefabbed the sides. 6' X 4' with 6" overlapping the bottom edge to help secure it. Then a 18" band around the top. I'm going to put lattice work on the sides for concealment as well as to shoot through. Good thing the farmer lets me use his wagon. The stand site overlooks a funnel on an alfalfa field. There is a natural lick that I keep freshning up with brine nearby. The only rule when using the stand is "kill doe".

That spot is a funnel near a natural mineral lick. I've had stands in there for a few years now. I can get to my stand as little as an hour before dusk. The deer start coming along the edge of the woods about a half hour later. In the morning, if the wind is right, I can see deer up to about 0830. After that, I might as well go home(or to work). For about two weeks during the rut, all bets are off. Deer are liable to show up anytime.

Looks good, it looks like itll be nice when done, i too have a spot or two like that, you can except deer to come tru into a certain time.

Some more pics. I'm in the "penthouse" phase. Putting the second tier and top on the stand. The view from the stand shows the cedar trees put in for range markers. The stand has a 25-30 arc marked around it by the cedars. The view into the brush is where the natural mineral lick is.

The treestand is finished. The roof is some kind of corregated tar paper stuff I've never seen before. The lattice work is to help break up my outline and create shadows. The most expensive part was the four 16' treated posts. A lot of the rest was scrounged or salvaged.
OhioHunter88
08-01-2006, 02:09 PM
is it attached to the tree or are the four post holding it up?
chadwimc
08-01-2006, 03:27 PM
Its a free standing piece. The posts are sunk 2' deep with concrete. It will get strapped to the walnut tree eventually. It is quite stable by itself, tho'...

Nice stand - don't strap it too tight to that tree cuz when the wind gets to rocking that tree it will be a rockin you stand -

well, it's time to get busy on this. the project starts tomorrow.
i have two options: a) get somebody to help me carry a one piece ladder to my location. b) i have to take it to the shop and make it portable.
my choice is b) going to try and do a project build along here, similar to what chad did. my goal from shop to woods is end of september. start hunting stand about halloween :mischeif:...
should be fun :)

as advertised, the project started today. if you are not interested, surf on :)
this ladder was originally 28 ft long. it was in a pump station for 20 years. the bottom 8 ft was missing. i started with 20 ft of it but when i moved it today about 2 ft broke off.

45, dAd did something similar, we had a 20 foot galvaniced ladder. he went 2 foot up took a triangluar chunk out of the back heated it bent it staright back, welded it back and on the 2 foot that was bent straight back he welded expanded metal onto, and made it bigger than the ladder but made support bars, so that was the platform and its got alot of room, he then just took and made a seat and we put it up......

88 that sounds like a great idea, i got a mig welder but i would have ta get the gas to weld aluminum...
now that thing looks heavy, but not as heavy as i thought :mischeif:
i'm a thinking of painting it this week and takin it to the woods in one piece...be perfect access for a nice comfy hangon stand.
it's about a mile hike unless i can borrow my buddy's mule. but i can get help carrying it. i actually thought it would be heavier but it aint. it's just long
btw, i got nothing done on the project today...

45----i couldnt get any good pics to turn out in the garage of the fridge so i pulled my boat up in the yard for you, this is Paint from a gallon, its Hunter Green, with designs from a black can of spray paint....

gonna "finish" camo painting it since i already have the paint. and also modify it. i will bolt a (detachable) plywood carpeted floor to the 18x24 platform making it 24x30. total weight about 18 lbs. (as bought stand weighs 16 lbs)
i will also add an additional ratchet strap to the stand around the tree attaching to the platform for good stability.

he he thought ya would like it. worked a little retail when i was younger so i knew it could be done...what the heck it dont hurt to ask :D
no i ain't scared. i could raise it another rung maybe and still step down into it but any higher and i gotta put in a tree step or somethin for my awkward old butt ta hang on to. there are no tree limbs ta grab...
word of wisdom, i shoulda waited and went for a bigger hang on ($$) and will probably change before season is over. but at the time i wanted a stand, i only had low bucks to spend. got over anxious. went against my better judgement, weak moment (but i did get a deal he he) :mischeif:

yeah that. IMHO, you gotta be just as good a hunter to shoot a "shot angle" picture of a deer, up close, from your stand, as to have a shot with an arrow (and it is much easier to execute ;) ).
keep in mind, this camera is in my hand, not mounted to a tree, not a trail cam or a video camera (although i would love to video a hunt). it is very small but takes good pics :D i just took it along to have fun on the opening day...wish i wouldn't forgot the binos...:nono:
from here on, the camera will stay in the pack until after the fact...:mischeif:
