I was reading a book last night about Whitetail deer and hunting. I was reading a part about different archery equipment there is to offer. (book was written in 1991)

Anyway, there was a "string tracker" a guy had on his bow that attached where a stabilizer does. It was somewhat like a bowfishin reel; you attach one end of the string to your arrow and when you shoot, the string acts as an aid in tracking your deer.

Has anone used this contraption? Seems a little off to me...

How long is the string?

Ive seen some used on t.v before but on turkey, its basically so you dont loose your arrow, and if the arrow stays in the animal than i guess you find it easily.

STRING TRACKERS ARE USED SOME ON DEER MAINLY USED IN THE RECOVERY OF TURKEYS ...IF STRING IS ATACHED TO THE ARROW PROPERLY THE ARROW CAN PASS THROUGH THE DEER OR TURKEY LEAVING THE STRING STILL IN THE CRITTER FOR EASY TRACKING ..HERE IS SOME MODELS..

STRING TRACKERS WORK GREAT ON GROUND HOGS ALSO ..USE THE HEAVY 30 # LINE WHEN THE ARROW PASSES THROUGH THE GROUNDHOG MOST TIMES THEY MAKE IT TO THE HOLE ..WAIT A FEW MINUTES THEN JUST PULL THE DEAD HOG OUT OF THE HOLE BY THE STRING .. ...THEY ARE GREAT ON GROUNDHOGS ..

yup they work...sometimes too good...a guy once hit a deer with a non lethal shot...the deer was still attached to the line...after a tough battle the guy was able to pull the deer in...:mischeif:

My dad and nephew started using them last year. My nephew shot a small 8 point with his Xbow and found the deer in the middle of a very nast thicket with minutes of climbing down the stand. It normally would have taken till well after dark with flashlights but it only took minutes. I believe there is a half mile if string there. Even if its a a poorly placed shot through the guts and the deer goes further than the line you can wait the proper time and look for sign or the string and find your deer alot quicker. I'm strongly considering buying it from dunhams before season. It doesn't affect accuracy either.

If you put the tracker on your stabalizer your arrow will hit lower. The drag is quite excessive.

I've never used one, however I had a guy tell me once that he used one to lay down a scent trail without leaving his scent behind....he said he just loaded up the string with scent, and attached it to an old arrow, he then shot the arrow out into the woods, the scent coated string went along with it and there you are...a scent trail a bowshot long with no scent from you along with it...I have never tried it but it at least makes a good story...New Guy

Leave it to a bow hunter to come up with an ideal like that.....:yikes: ;) :bouncy:

I may just have to try that one myself....;)

I tried a string tracker about 10 years ago and did not like the way the arrows flew. As Thunderflight mentioned, drag was a big problem, especially at longer distances such as 15 or 20 yards. Line tends to stick as it comes out of the spool, at least with the model I tried.

I Never Had A Problem With Arrow Flight Out Of My Crossbow " But " Mine Was Mounted On My Scope Above The Arrow .....keeping The String Above The Arrow Might Be The Key To Good Arrow Flight .....:D

I tried one when I got my first bow about 20 years ago, big time marketing on them back then and they convinced me I needed to try one. I gave it up before hunting season came around.

It does make extra noise and it causes extra drag making the arrow strike low. To me it seemed like it was more hassle than it was worth.

mine was mounted on my stablizer,so i had to resight my pins.only used it once worked fine just had to fight the urge to set the hook as line was coming off the spool.it worked great just did not like anything else added to my bow.
