yes they seem to drop down fast and will let you step on them before they run...they run too slow and wobbly, easy prey...bet the predators have a field day on them...their best bet is not to move...stay real still to keep from being detected...something that they never forget...something they use in adult life when they know their speed wont work...they know to drop down fast ,stay still...:mischeif:

Newborn fawns have no smell to them at all.
when they are first born they have the smell of the blood and all the other slime all over them ...the doe immediately licks them clean...descenting them ...the 1st minutes of their life are very crucial...they gain strength very fast...also the wiley predator can pick up the smell of a doe during birthing even as the lil giblet starts to first come out into the world...a doe can run away as she is giving birth...even if the lil sucker is just half way out...:mischeif:

Saturday morning while turkey hunting I found the back hindquarters of a fawn. Everything else was gone. It was a very fresh kill. Sat afternoon I saw a fawn stand up and wobble a bit in some tall grass. :) Very cool. Sun morning I found another fresh back hindquarter of a fawn... all of this happened within a 200 yd radius.

Last night when I finished working in the garden, I ran the tiller into the barn. My wife and daughter took a ride on the 4 wheeler. When I walked back out fo the barn there was a fawn that had ran through the gate and into the back of my yard. It was in a panick and trying to jump through the chain link fence. It kept jumping into the fence. I went out to catch it and take it around the fence but it ran back to the gate.
About this time here they come on the 4 wheeler. I got them to stop so they wouldn’t scare it out to the road. We live on a pretty busy road and the speed limit is 50 mph.
Unfortunatly the fawn ran down the fence and went behind the gate. It kept jumping against the fence. So I went and caught it and carried it around the gate and turned it loose. It bauled a couple times while I had it in my hands. It ran off tail flagging.
It was young enough that I don’t think it could out run to many predators. Luckly I haven’t seen any coyotes or loose dogs around my area. So my sent that I left on it should be gone before it could cause it any trouble.
After it was gone I thought I should have checked if it was a buck or doe. But at the time all I wanted to do is get it around that gate and free. Also no time for pictures.

Nice job Steve. I havn't seen any fawns yet, dead or alive. I took a trip to Columbus on Saturday and saw 3 dead bucks and 2 greast spots. One buck had a big body and nice antler growth for this time of year.

I knew someone would say that. Do you think I would have touched it if I didn't think it needed help?
They say not to touch them because.... they don't want everybody that sees a fawn handling them. The doe is not going to leave the fawn to die.:coco:
This fawn needed help so I helped it.
Now another story. My wifes aunt emailed me after I told here the story about this fawn. Uncle saw a fawn in the woods the other day. He p9icked it up and carried it to the house so he could take pictures of it. Then he took it back where he found it. Went back later and it was gone. THIS WAS VERY STUPID. IF HE BRINGS IT UP TO ME I WILL TELL HIM SO.

Now, I don't make it a habit of handling any wild animal, and a deer farm may be a whole lot different that the wild. But in this case, all was well, human scent and all.
A few years ago my neighbor saw a fawn on the side of the road, no doe around. A couple hours later I went up the road and sure enough, there the little one was, lying in a ditch.
I picked it up and brought it home, then called the game warden's office. He gave me the number to a deer farmer whom I called, and made arrangements to deliver the fawn to him. He said that he would put the fawn on a doe and she would become a surrogate mother to it.
A follow-up call a few months later and the fawn was doing fine.

Saw my first of the year this morning. Went out to get the paper and noticed momma and youngster "ankle deep" in the pond getting a drink. There were also about 10 male mallards laying pond side as well. With a bit of smoke coming off the water it was a great site this early morning. Then, after breakfast and getting in the car to go to work I looked again and saw a coyote running across the pond shore line.

I had a rare sighting (rare for me anyway) on the way to work a couple days ago. I saw a doe standing in a front yard about 50 ft. out of the wood line. She was staring into the woods when all of a sudden three young-uns' burst out to meet her and then all three start nursing:gaga: Triplets! Momma let them feed for at least a minute as I pulled over to watch. Wish I had the camera with me.

The pic you guys are posting are awesome. I've got to get me a trail cam.
I took a walk down to my stand yesterday evening and saw a doe with two fawns where I normally see deer.
For the last two evenings at the farm about 1/2 mile away, I've seen a six and an 8 point, and several does in a bean field.
