Haven't posted for quite sometime since losing my job last Spring, which now leaves me commuting back and forth across the state with very little free time anymore. Although with what time I had, I was fortunate enough to fill all 4 tags with long beards, in 6 days of hunting, 2 in PA and 2 in Ohio. All nice birds, but my last bird I got in Ohio Friday morning was banded. I reported it with the info, but wasn't a reward band. Has anyone else killed a banded bird? Are some actually rewarded with money?

I'm not 100% limbhanger but i think the reward birds have double bands on them. The lady at the check station i go to said 1 bird was tagged in Logan county with a double band and the guy got $150 bucks for it. She also said there is 1 double banded bird in every county of the state:confused: I cant see the state riskin payin 13,200 dollars out in rewards.

Tagged birds are for studies on harvest info. The tag had a toll free number which takes in the info you give them. They told me Ohio, Pa and New York are all involved with tagged birds in each state. This particular bird was captured on Feb 14 2006 with several others by rocket nets then tagged and released. They claimed they would send me more info on this, with locations where tagged and the birds age. They said they do not stock, just tag and release for future studies. He was not tame, just stupid enough to walk under the rocket net bait traps.:D He was a pretty good limbhanger though.
Razor, this bird was doubled tagged, but they said if it was a reward bird it would say on the band. That's the reason I raised this question, I've actually killed another banded bird in Ohio about six years ago. All I got then was a camo hat, makes me wonder if they want you to think reward just so you call with the info.? either way I'd still call, just happy to take him. I'm thinking he's about 4 years old, should know once they send me the info on him.

There's a reward with that kill from the NWTF....I would think that the Ohio Chapter is almost the same as the PA one and they offer $100.00 to the harvester..hopefully your program is the same...if it was shot near the PA border it might be a fly over from our system...turn it in to the PA chapter? That'l' pay your spring and fall tags if nothing else.....hopefully yours has the same system..there's a post on HuntingPa about one harvested here and that was the response they gave him...$100 ???? Worth checking out!!

My friend killed a tagged bird last year. They sent him a pin and a letter for it. Pretty neat.

NT 2002, this bird was killed in Columbia Co. on public ground, I'm guessing approx. 1 mile from the PA line. I live in Beaver Co. PA about 10 mins. from Ohio, which makes it real convient for me to hunt both states.
Frank, thanks I'll look into that, but when I called they stated it was not a reward bird. And they also stated it was tagged in Ohio even though I was only about a mile from PA. They also said PA, Ohio, and New York were all involved in this banding study.

They had an article about banded birds in the last issue of the caller. Seems half of them are reward birds and the other half are not. If I read it right all birds banded next year will not be reward birds along with half of them this year that are not and the reason they offer the reward was because it encourages everyone harvesting a bird to call it in to see if it was a reward bird. All in all it is pretty darn cool that you got one, they didn't band that many birds. Great job

Walleyed, no, this bird was from public ground just outside of Calcutta, not sure of the name? Sorry for the late response, don't make it home too often with my job.
