Well sh*t- got out about 6 or so. Im ready to roll. Started hearin the birds gobble about 150 yards away. When it was light enough I started cluckin and all- birds were still far away. I musta heard 100+ gobbles. Nothing close. About 7- i about jumped- maybe 60 yards away I have two gobblers down in the ridge. I start cluckin as loud as I can and yelping- got these birds attention- they ran right in- seen them to my right and they were calm and struttin there stuff- Not sure what happened next. They seen my decoys- one flew over this bush and got nerovous as hell- he went out of strutt and his tassle shrunk on his head- he walked over to my decoys and all I could see was his neck and head because he was on the other side of a slight slope. The other bird just kinda wondered back down the hill. So the bird I can see walks and stops by the decoys- I didnt want to take the shot and wound him possibly- i wanted to see him all before I pulled the trigger- well he goes back down the hill gobblin with his little friend. Did he see me? or was he nervous about the jake decoy and expect the hen decoy to follow? Hell I dont know.I got the whole thing on film and Im pissed. Then I caught a tresspasser walkin by and told him to get the f*** out of here before I call the game warden because he didnt have a permission slip. Note that im hunting like 200 acres. He was in the middle of this property. Rested till about 9 30- then unexpectingly had a bird come in slient. I wasnt prepared- he wondered off. That was about my whole day. I cant wait till I bust one of these nervous paranoid birds. Not sure how much more school I can miss so I may have to wait till this weekend.:irked: Gonna try and talk one more morning out of my parents this week if I can. I sure I can fill one of my tags by sunday.

The guy who owns that 200 acres wouldn't happen to be Mr. Hale (or Hail?) by any chance would it? I may be over in Clark here sometime this season if I get the chance :bouncy:

tough luck A88...you'll bag a bird this week. stay with it.
sounds to me like you did everything good to get the birds into your deeks and the interloper spoiled your hunt.
birds may have seen the movement of the trespasser???

Went solo today- heard another turkey hunter aways down the ridge usin his owl hoot about 5:45 this mornin- he got them to gobble like crazy- heard gobbles all morning just not as much as monday. They shut down by 8..never saw anyhting- had one or two gobble about 70 yards away. They werent very responsive- goin to do a different appraoch tommorow. Didnt hear one shot all day. Ive got a good feeling about tommorow morning though:mischeif:

Got within60 yards of a roostin tom,- got him to respond once to my calls- he flew down and never was seen. They shut down at 7 this morning. Ran into three guys on public land and Talked to them and they said a bunch of hooligans have been hunting and doing everything possible to get a bird to gobble and I guess they been spookin birds left and right because there idiots. These three guys said they have had the same problem I am having- birds not coming in or freaking out when they see the decoys. I think Im gonna bale out of this property and start hunting 2 other propertys . And another thing I thought was wierd- those hooligans blasted a owl hoot 4 times at 9 am this morning!?

good luck, hope the hunting pressure dies down for ya. I'm going to a private spot tomorrow that gets hammered pretty good during the first week, but after that it dies off pretty good. I've been lucky here in the past after the first week, we'll see what happens. If I see other hunters parked I'll go to plan B.

Just got back- left early because I heard nothing and i have to get back to school. This new property has awesome setups. I went in blind folded because this was my first time going up there. I heard a few distant gobbles. They were wayyyy out there- i barely heard them. Then I heard a hen about the same distance. Id have to say there arent as many birds as there are across the street where I have been hunting. Which is wierd because this property has more potential and better terrian that is perfect for turkeys. Who knows maybe I'll go back here another day and catch one roostin closer.

Hunted the same place I did opening moring where i heard 100+ gobbles. Set up listened and heard nothing- not even a fly down. Left and hunted across the street....heard nothing!?! Left and got a quick breakfast. Arrived to our new 80 acre parcel. Heard nothing..called quits at 11:50. Im guessin all this wearin and tearin gets on these birds midway. Oh well they should open back up and be out lookin for more hens soon. I always have more luck towards the 3rd week on the season anyhow. But overall today was possibly the funnest day I had hunting. Watched some deer for the longest time...and got them on video for Perry County Productions:coolgleamA: . When we left I stopped at a tree to take a leak and all the sudden i hear something falling through the trees above me and then I hear a thump. Thinking it was a tree limb or something- about 2 seconds later a squrriel gets up and runs. That musta hurt. On the way out we found a deer shed.

A few weeks ago, I called in these two owls together 3 different times in the same day.. the latest one was at about 10:45, those owls were hooting all morning, and I only blew my call that late cause I heard them.

05-09-2006, 09:24 AM
Went out this morning- heard some birds across the field up in the woods- set up and started calling- well here comes a coyote. Pulled my gun up and got him in my sights. Clicked safety off. Then I second guessed my self. He was standing about 35-40 yards away. But the birds were gobbling good and I didnt want to screw my chance over of getting one. Plus I was just using # 6 shot. So I let him go . Well he ran to the left of me and I didnt know and discovered me. He was in a thicket and started raising total hell with me. Barking and yelping and all. He wouldnt shut up so I got up and started walking towards him but he went back up over the hill and started making more noise. I snuck up the hill and and he spotted me and ran. It was still real early so I set back up and the birds stopped gobbling once this whole thing was over. I just wanted the coyote to shut up and leave so I could attempt to call a bird in without him breathing on my neck. I believe next time Im gonna take a few #4's and not 2nd guess and just lay one out.

That's too bad that coyote ruined your hunt TripleA. I hear ya on the dedication thing. You say you haven't slept past 8 since April 24th. I haven't partied with my friends since then. Instead, just as they are ready to go to the bar, I have to go home to bed so I can get up early enough to make it out to the woods by sunup. This will all be worth it when we bag a nice gobbler though! Good luck to ya!

yep- I have missed two partys since turkey season started but I have all summer and so on for going to those. Turkey season only comes once a year. Id much rather be in the woods.

Maybe that will be just the ticket that gets us our trophy gobblers! If we sit out there and brave the elements, our sacrifices and determination will be rewarded! I'm going out tomorrow morning. It will be wet, cold and windy...but I will be hunting instead of sitting at my desk so I'll love every minute of it.

Heard a bunch of gobbles- set up on two toms - think I made too much noise settin up- they flew done and went sumwheres- then I started hearing gobbles a distance off and I went and had a second setup. Gobblers were goin nuts. Quite honestly I dont think they had hens. Not sure why they didnt come in. Ive got a good plan for tommorow. As long as we have similar weather to what I had this morning it will be great. Well see what happens tommorow. You never know
TripleA88
05-14-2006, 10:02 AM
:irked: Had a gobbler fired up off the roost- he came into the field in front of me about 100 or so yards. Kept gettin him to gobble including others in the woods on his side. He stood around for the longest time. He was probably contemplating where he wanted to go. Tried and tried to yank him down my way but he went to his other buddies. Might of helped if I woulda remembered put my decoys out. I imagine I'll go every morning this week before school and next weekend.

You are definately dedicated hunters! I plan on trying one morning before work this week. The problem is that my hunting ground is an hour away! It will be hard to make myself go back to work if I am hearing a lot of gobblers.

Went out this morning- didnt hear alot. Maybe like one distant gobble- these past 2 days havent been good. Had two deer in front of me- they winded me and ran. Then not but 5 yards behind me- this is prolly worst spook I ever got- a deer winded so loud- turned around real quick and 4 deer took off. Few minutes later I hear more noise behind me. Deer takes off. Again another deer blows- a coyote is behind me. Prolly the same one I had a problem with a few days ago. Its about 45 yards behind me. It hears me and runs. Then I caught sight of it yet again down the tree line- It sees my decoys and comes in. I get situated to blast him. I wasnt gonna hold back this time. He comes in about 50 yards with his head down and stops and gets scared and runs. I started squealing with my diaphram and he stops and keeps lookin back. He goes up in the upper field and stands there and starts barking and yelping at me again just like the other day.:irked: :irked: :irked:

Hopefully your luck will change for you in the next few days. I will be trying my luck out tomorrow morning. The field I am planning on setting up on sits right by the road. There is a roosting tree nearby and I saw 3 turkeys in that field last week. The only problem is that once a car goes by, the turkeys go running. It is not a heavily traveled road, so I am hoping that I can get them within gun range before a car drives past and sends them away. I am so anxious to get a gobbler that I can taste it!

I can't seem to find a gobbler for the life of me. All I ever see are hens all by themselves. I've gone back to the same area for 3 weeks now, hoping these hens will have a gobbler with them eventually but they never do. Am I wrong to do this? Should I just have given up on them and gone to another area?
TripleA88
05-18-2006, 09:20 AM
Ive given up on all my propertys except one- which is in my back yard- all the other ones turned to crap in the first 2 weeks of the season. I might go out and stop out at one or two this weekend if I get a urge to
And I couldnt get up this morning to go out hunting. I will tommorow though and all morning sat. and sunday.

Heard nothin today- been hunting here behind my house- last weekend they were going crazy now they arent talkin- went and tried another property- heard nothing but seen a buck- the other property has to much pressure from other turkey hunters and fisherman fishing the creek for whitebass down the road a lil ways. I believe Im just gonna hunt behind the house all day tommorow. Were suppose to have a warmer night tonight which will help. Im gonna go to walmart and buy an owl hoot and go locate some tonight if I get time. This is by far the hardest turkey hunting season I have had- but hey..it cant be easy all the time- need a challenge everyonce in a while.

Might wanna turn volume all the way up- and thats me calling and my friend was video taping. I was perty nervous and i slipped on a few of my calls but it didnt seem to affect them.
Heres a video of opening morning- hopefully it work for you guys. It was the closest morning I have had to baggin one. You can see them appear on the right strutting then they stop behind a bush because they spotted the decoys- they went out of strutt and tassles shrunk up- one of them went bolting back down the hill and the other flew over the bush and and went to the decoys- all I could see was his head and neck on the other side of a slight slope. He went back down the hill gobbling with the other. Well looking back at the video and knowing what i know now- I probably could have got him but in my state of mind then I was waiting for a full body shot- right where the neck meets the body. I cut out the part where they were gobbling back down the hill because I said a few curse words that arent nice that you can hear in the video.
