I live in southeast Ohio and I've just been given access to hunt a piece of land that has approximately 5 acres of meadow/pasture on the front side of the woods. I've also been given permission to plant any food plots I want. I have access to a tractor, a disc and a bushhog/mower. I do not have access to a seed drill. I'm considering doing a no-plow type of plot. I want something that will grow well through the late spring and on into late summer. I'm kind of thinking soybeans. How would they do in a no-plow application?

I'd also like some input on fall/winter plots. I've heard a lot about chicory and clover being good together. What about winter wheat and elbon rye? I know that clover and elbon rye grow well in this area because my house is on the next hill over from this property I'm going to hunt, and we planted reclamation mix (which has clover and rye in it) on the bare ground after we finished our house. The clover and rye are growing like crazy.

Any thoughts?

I have heard a lot of people working with the Roundup ready Soybeans though I haven't heard any results. We don't have a seed drill either and never have any issues with anything coming up. We just disk really well, throw out the seed and drag it really good. Last fall we planted Austrian Winter peas and they came up really well. The winter wheat and rye should do well in the winter. Oats could be mixed in though they won't may not make it through a hard winter. Try some brassica/turnips in a section as well. They will grow really good if you just throw the seed on some disked ground and will be there for some late winter hunts. My past experience is that Wheat, Rye, and Brassica will take off even with little ground work.
