I would like to purchase a ground blind for hunting geese, groundhogs, turkeys, etc. and would like to know how groundhogs react to being hunted from ground blinds.

I posted this in the Bowhunting section too, but there's seems to be more conversation about groundhogs in this forum. :)

Has anyone hunted groundhogs from a ground blind?

Thank you, Bowhunter57

I have never heard of anyone hunting groundhogs from a ground blinds but then I don't hunt g-hog's with a bow.
I would think a ground blinds would work but you may have to set there a long time and not make a sound.
IF it was me I would put the bow away and take a rifle out to g-hog hunting.
I like to go out and set in my truck and glass for tham then get out and use the back end of my truck as a rest to make some long range shots at g-hog's.........the longer they are the better I like it.

Hey if you ever end up trying a ground blinds for g-hog hunting come back and let us know how you did.

I don't use ground blinds for g-hogs. I don't hunt them with a bow either.
I use a rifle and will sit still along a field with a brush line to break up my silhouette, most likely in the shade. If I get bored I'll get up and move to the next field.

You need to learn to stalk up on them. When you learn to sneak with in bow range of a ground hog then you have done something! I have done it and killed three or four and missed a couple after the stock.

When you can do it then try deer.

GH's are pretty smart. Those things frustrate me sometimes... I think, "OK gotcha now!!" then he runs off. :irked:

I would hate to know he tally between me and GH's...probably GH-150 hunTer-10

Like Nike would say, "Just do it!" It would give you a summer time of learning what/whatnot to do in a blind. Pick the g'hogs that are back in the woods were Rick can't long range 'em.:D G'hogs under buildings would be another good place to do this type of hunting w/ a bow & around the houses too. You could be a bigtime hero doing that & do it in places that no gun hunter could.;)
Let us know what you come up w/.:bouncy:

Have a portable treestand? If so you can scout the edge of woodlines along fields to locate fresh burrows. Then just setup your stand within a reasonable distance that will offer a clear view of the area.

That would be my best suggestion for a prairie grizzly archery safari. Personally I think I'll stick to my rifles.

MrFurious,
Thank you for suggesting that option, but I've tried that and a groundhogs' vision/awareness of predators from above is very good. :16suspect1: I've been standing very still, seen the groundhog come out, stand up, look up and go back into his hole not to be seen again.

Thank you, to all that have replied. :)

I purchased a Full Draw 5 groundblind from Cabelas with the Skyline XL camo pattern for $150 and love it. :) It only weighs 14 lbs. and sets up in 15 seconds. This is a hub style blind, not a "pop up" style.

I've been hunting groundhogs out of it and I'm having a blast! :bouncy: I've killed 4 out of 5 groundhogs, so far. It is absolutely amazing at how "invisible" it seems that I am inside this groundblind. I simply walk to where I know the groundhogs are going to come out, set up the blind and wait. No brushing it in, no hiding, getting eaten by bugs, getting rained on or burnt by the sun.....just sit, wait and take your best shot. :coolgleamA:

Now I'm assuming that you're taking them w/ a bow, right?
Where are you setting up? Edge of the field, out in the field, back in the woods.
Doesn't it get hot in it? How long are you waiting to see action?
I know that's a lot of questions, but don't worry, there's more.:dizzy:

vvarmitr,
Yes, with a bow. I'm using a Reflex Buckskin set at 59#, Cobra Sidewinder LX sight, Simms S-Coil stabilizer, Tru-Ball release, AeroDynamics carbon arrows and a variety of broadheads.

Where are you setting up?
Mostly on the edges of fields, but I've set up right out in the open too.

Doesn't it get hot in it? How long are you waiting to see action?
Sometimes it gets a little hot, but I open another window to allow for a cross-breeze. Otherwise, it's not that uncomfortable.

I wait about 30 to 45 minutes and after that I'll fold up the blind and move on to another location. Usually, I'll see a groundhog or two that are already out and I'll slowly walk toward them. When they run to their holes I stop walking and stand there to let them calm down a bit. I'll continue walking to within 25 yards of their holes, set up the blind, fold out a chair and wait. In about 5 to 20 minutes they're back out to check out the blind. :16suspect1: After a close inspection, they'll ease on out like nothing's wrong and it'll make you feel like you're invisible.
