Last night at our church's sportsman event, I was talking to a neighbor (figuratively, probably lives a mile away), and he had heard that I shot a coyote during deer season, etc. and was telling me about this barn somewhere over in that general area that is rotten that supposidly a bunch of coyotes are living in.

Ok...so this morning on my way to school I went past his house and the neighboring field. It was about 7:10ish so it was all but broad daylight. I couldn't believe my eyes...there's a coyote running out in the field!

The story gets weirder. This morning at about 8:15, my parents saw a coyote in the field acrossed from our house. Now, we live in the country, but there are probably 8 or 9 houses that are within 500 yards of our house...oh yeah, and State Route 42! So this coyote runs through that field, runs ACCROSSED the road, through corner of our front yard, and then ran to a hedgerow in the field next to us (ironically, there's a farm about 1/2 mile in that direction that has already told me I'm free to hunt their pastures for the multiple coyotes they've seen).

What the heck is going on here??? Not can, but what would cause a yote to run a mile or more; including close or on residential areas? I'm not convinced that it was the same one, but you never know. I guess I'm most concerned that a coyote would attack our dog (an 11 year old Lab), but I'm sure there's a great chance that that wouldn't happen.

So this is the 4th farm in a 5 mile radius that 1) has coyotes and 2) I can get premission from....I'm thinking about getting serious here.

I saw a hunting show on TV where they were using Labs as live bait for coyotes. The Labs were trained to be sent out as the hunters sat and watched from a nearby vantage point. The coyotes would attempt to team up on the Lab and the hunter would shoot before they could get too close.

Considering the fact that's she the family pet and that I don't have the best shooting record, I don't think we are going to go that route!

Lots of yotes over there in Crawford and Richland counties (turkey to). I deer hunt Crawford county and am always coming across coyote tracks. I've been hoping to spot one during bow season while in my stand, but so far all I've seen is 2 red fox.

Cap't Ernie,
It could've very easily been the same coyote. Guys in my area that hunt coyotes with dogs have ran the same coyote for over 10 miles before their dogs will catch up to them. These guys use 2 Airedales and will switch to 2 fresh Airedales after about 2 or 3 miles of a chase.

I guess I'm most concerned that a coyote would attack our dog (an 11 year old Lab), but I'm sure there's a great chance that that wouldn't happen.
Don't hold your breath on that one, brother. If there's more than one coyote there's bravery in numbers and they'll try nearly any dog. You'll hear more of that sort of thing further out west, but the population of coyotes is getting pretty high east of the Mississippi and they're getting braver all the time.

If you have access to a live chicken, tie a teather on its' leg and stake it out in front of your calling position as a decoy. Nothing like a live decoy to keep their attention. Otherwise, a mechanical decoy will do the trick. :)

Good hunting, Bowhunter57
