View Full Version : Tuning Question

I have been shooting my long bow a lot and have some tuning questions.:woohoo1:
My arrows started out with quite a bit of up and down kick so I adjusted the nock point. It’s around ½” above 90 right now. It seemed to have improved. When I retrieve my arrows from the target they still were not all at the same angle but I have a hard time seeing the arrow flight when shooting so I started videoing my shots. That showed that there was still a little bit of up and down kick. I fletch my own arrows and use a straight jig and put a little bit of twist in the 4” fletch. The fletch appears to go through the gap between the pad on the self and the one the side on the riser. Should I be shooting a full helical fletch or do I continue playing with the nock point until I get it.:bonk: Thanks for any suggestions.

Aroows are 2117 Easton xx75's at 29". I'm ordering the Great Northern long bow quiver form 3rivers and while I am at it i'm gonna get some new 5" fletch. Should they be applied helical or does it matter?

give a little more info on what type of longbow and the draw weight and your draw length ..did you look at the spine chart on the web page i showed you under spine chart easton alum:confused:

Ross Co. Bowhunter
03-02-2006, 08:49 PM
The bow is an Allegheny Mountain and I think made by Bill Kerner from Apollo Pensylvania. 57 lbs. at 29”. The arrow chart says the 2117 should have to correct spline.

mullskinner
03-02-2006, 08:52 PM
whats your actual draw length ?

Ross Co. Bowhunter
03-02-2006, 08:56 PM
If the actual draw is how far the arrow is moving it is 23"

mullskinner
03-02-2006, 09:02 PM
nock a arrow draw the bow to were you anchor ..have somebody draw a line on your arrow at the center of the riser at the shelf .. let the bow down ..measure from the center of the nock ( hole ) to the mark ..thats your actual draw ..they make a light poundage bow with measurments on it for this ..but if you don't have one do what i told you to do to measure your draw ...

Ross Co, Up and down nock flight is nock point adjustment. Impact left or right is spine. As far as fletch you need @ 15" of feather on a hunting arrow, 3 5" or 4 4". Straight or helical depends on type of clamps you have, but I would try to get the arrow to spin. Straight applied at a angle, helical at a angle depending on clearence. Duane

This is all starting to make since now. While shooting 95% of my shots were missing to the left. From what I am gathering here I have two things to work on. One is easy - shoot the right arrow, the other is to continue playing with nock placement. I am ordering new fletch today that are 5" and will apply them with a slight twist. I have read Fred Asbell's, Instinctive Shooting and Instinctive Shooting II but they mostly deal with a recurve. Anybody got suggestions on a good book that deals strictly with a long bow?

Gotta watch these late evening adjustments where I need help. My wife threatened to stick my bow and arrows in a place that may not be comfortable when I woke her up last night.:yikes: :yikes:

Thanks for all the help. It is most appreciated and will save me from many hours of :banghead3: :banghead3:.

i think asbels(or fred bears, basically the same way)will work with recurve or longbow...i use a low grip which works great with longbow and i carry it over to the recurve too where many use a high grip,as asbel(bear)teaches...on recurves...this is the biggest difference in the 2 different types bows from his teaching is the high grip...everything else is basically the same...most longbowers i believe use a low grip...so to be able to shoot a recurve and a longbow i keep the form and technique xactly the same, including the low grip...:mischeif:

I shot the 2016's this evening and the arrow flight looked alot better. Did't have alot of time to shoot but enough to see that they made a difference. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have more time but won't make any adjustments until my stuff gets here from 3rivers on Monday or Tuesday. Thanks again for all the info guys.:bouncy:  :bouncy: .

Glad you guys got Ross Co. on the right track! The 2117's were definitely to stiff at his 27" draw as his groups were consistantly left. Prolly only gettin 51-52# outta the bow and the 2016's should be just fine. The Allegany is a fine bow. My bud used his recurve to win at Denton Hill back in 2000:bouncy: Mr. Kerner's bows are proven good shooters....TF

what they all said!!! All about archer helping archers.......spine will affect up and down also (residual affect)....however, it usually is nock point.

Great reccomendations everyone. Might be worth everyones time to download Easton's shaft selection program from their website. It's free, it used to be in the downloads section, and it can answer tons of
questions.

:coolgleamA: I have the easton chart and was looking it over last night. Now that I know what my actual numbers are it's easy to make since out of. It's a great tool. Think I might go and get me a few 2018 to see how they fligh. I'm waiting for the temps. to come up today so I can get back out there and shoot.:bouncy: :bouncy: :bouncy:

Thanks, the easton chart says the 2018's will carry more energy than the 2016's because they are little heavier.

mullskinner

They May Fly Ok ..but If You Cut Them To Short They May Be Over Spine ..and You Will End Up Like The 2117 's ..

ross ...that little bit of xtra weight means very little especially on thinskinned animals as whitetail...accuracy and the best tuned arrow/bow ,especially when using broadheads ,:mischeif: is much more important...

WHEN you get it real close and have it "fine tuned" but if you really want it "micro fine tuned"...just make a half doz. or a full doz. the way you have the others ...but put on PINK FEATHERS...IT WONT GET ANY BETTER...RIGHT MULLSKINNER...:mischeif:
