well igotta disagree with you there buddy. ive tried and failed 13 times , onlym got one to shoot and then gave it away , the proper thing to say would be ,,,,,, anyone can make one with alot of patience. thats one thing i dont have alot of , and belive me .. you will need it . :tsk: hoot

p.s. the 12 i made were all take down models . some took down on the top limb , and some took down on the bottom ,,

well how about a selfbow story ,
my wife kinda laughed at me and said i dont think you will ever get one to shoot , i told her i really needed a small band saw to make self bows , not really i just wanted a saw . so she told me that if i get one to shoot just one arrow , she will buy me a saw ..
i went to work one morning after she went to work and started a bow , now mind you im not like a regular bowyer , i dont want to be the best , i just want to be the fastest, at noon i was shooting the bow , about 3 hours later. (it was made of hickory), i shot 3 or 4 arrows . went inside and called my wife , told her to get her band saw buying butt home , i got a shooter ,
when she got home she came inside and said , lets see her shoot.i was waiting at the table . went outside with a dozen arrows , and shot one , she said thats enough , and i said no way , and shot the rest , we loaded up went to sears and bought my saw . got home and decided to shoot a few judos across the road in the picked bean field , grabbed the bow and a judo and off i went , shot several times and this bow was a shooter , kinda slow , but rite where you were looking , then this robin landed out there a ways , pow!!! feathers everywhere , i steped it off and it was 33 steps . dadgumitman i was inpressed with my new bow ,, i arrowed it again and just as i let it loose , the bow came apart in 3 pieces , all i was holding was the riser and grip , the top limb hit me rite between the eyes and the bottom one made it about 15 yards away from me. my ole lady got quite a laugh out of it , but i still got my saw.. hoot:D

now why would any thinking person want to whittle a weapon out of an old stick when he can go and buy one ready made out of fiberglass so easily?:coco:

yes, yes, I'm kidding. tons of good info out there. alot more than there was 10 years ago. you don't have to be wizard with tools, or a mechanical engineer to make a serviceable bow. doesn't even require patience, really. patience is only required if you'd rather be doing something else. what it does require is time, determination and a careful eye. it's enjoyable work, from live tree to finished bow for those who like doing it. well made wooden bows surrending nothing in performance to their fiberglassed cousins. for those of you who's only experience with a wooden bow is watching a beginners bail-bouncing first effort lob arrows at 20 yards, better take another look. there is a mountain of satisfaction in making and using your own bows and arrows. they still work very well for target shooting and killing animals despite what the guy behing the counter at the local pro shop might tell you.

making wooden bows is a journey, not a destination. hardest part is taking the first step.

A journey I;m about to take. Thanks to Mullskinners generosity. I have 8 hickory staves which I sealed to prevent checking. I will pick one out to practice with. De- bark, get a center line, outline ny bow on the back. Cut to a rough out bow. Then dry it. I'm not even a traditional archer. I own one recurve. But the thought of making a bow from a tree trunk. (one that works) And killing a deer with it. Is the most satifsying things I can think of. Creating such a weapon by hand is a thrill. The purity of it all makes up the very essence of what an outdoorsman is. I expect during tillering to have a collection of firewood. But thats ok. one day a wonderful wood bow shall be born of my hands. my sweat, my blisters, my essence.

Me and a friend are in the process of making a recurve. Not sure how it will turn out, but were givin it a try. So far so good anyway.

Anybody have any pics of bows that they have made?

with that mentality Muzzy, you will succeed. another thing to consider is that anybody who has made many bows has broken their share. is part of the learning curve. experience is best teacher.
